Details of
Outstanding Work Climate change & Fossil Biodiversity: at all levels of geological resolution
through Earth history in India and other Gondwana continents as relates to
a selection of heritage corridors across the continent.
Fossil Biodiversity and Climate Change through the Late Carboniferous to
Early Jurassic as is reflected in the rock sequence of the Karoo Basin,
South Africa— by far the richest and largest basin of this age globally.
Climate change and Fossil biodiversity through the Permian to Early
Cretaceous as is reflected in the rock sequence of the Mahanadi Gondwana
Basin— by far the richest and largest Indian basin of this age globally.
Plant biodiversity: as preserved in the glossopterids of the Indian Permian (as part
of a wider international project tracking terrestrial biodiversity trends through
geological time). Glossopteris, the most abundant genus in the Indian
Permian flora, has thus far not been satisfactorily delimited into species.
The artificial classification of the genus Glossopteris, based on morphology
and cuticular characteristics of isolated leaves from uncertain localities,
does not reflect natural biodiversity. Therefore, the speciation of
Glossopteris has been re-examined. Further, a review of previous work on
the subject has been summarized for a clear understanding of the form,
reproductive morphology, habit and diversity of the genus. Presently 130
species of Indian Glossopteris are in current use. The proposal has been
made to reduce this number to just 28 species (complex) that might be
considered natural. Moreover, the diversity of other glossopterid genera
(including fructifications), global climate change through the Permian
have also been studied.
Fossil collections: Collected and studied the Permian to Lower Cretaceous
fossil plant collections of almost all the Gondwana Continents (India,
Australia, South Africa, South America, Antarctica). Studied most
extensive fossil collections of India and South Africa, which represent
several geological formations including many localities.
Megafloral assemblages, palaynofloral assemblages of Lower Gondwana
fossil localities of Ib River, Talcher, Korba, Mand-Raigarh, Singrauli,
Ramkola-Tatapani, East Bokaro, West Bokaro, North Karanpura, South
Karanpura basins have been studied. Morphotaxonomy of different plant
species, their diversification and evolutionary trends during Permian-
Triassic interval have been studied.
These pre-angiospermic floras will be systematically analysed to depict the
palaeofloristics, palaeogeography, palaeolandscape, palaeoclimate,
palaeoecology, palaeoenvironment and palaeovegetation of this basin in
different time.
Origin, evolution and extinction of each genus of Lower Gondwana flora
have been studied.
Species Diversity of each genus of different plant group (Gymnosperm:
Cordaitales Coniferales, Cycadales, Gingkoales, Pteridophytes:
Lycopodiales, Filicales, Equisetales, Sphenophyllales) has been studied and
deduced during Gondwana period.
Palaeofire: Fossil charcoal derived from the woody materials, leaves and
sporangia have been studied to infer palaeofire evidence in the study area.
4
Marine incursion: The Permian–Triassic succession of the Indian
Gondwana Sequence was previously considered to have been deposited in a
fluviatile-lacustrine environment. Similarly, earlier Lower Gondwanas of
the Mahanadi Master basin were considered entirely fresh water deposits.
Ichnology and palynology along with a few sedimentary records are
reviewed and analysed for inferring marine signature. The marine nature of
the Talchir, Karharbari, Barakar, Barren Measures and Kamthi sediments
of three major basins was predicted on the basis of typical marine
ichnofossils, acritarchs, reports of phosphorite nodules, sedimentary
structures, evidence of wave activity, salinity raise and discovery of
phosphorite in Permian sediments also strengthen this view.
Organic geochemistry (biomarker study) has been undertaken to
determine the source vegetation, depositional condition and hydrocarbon
source potential in the Permo-Triassic formations.
Acoustic study in mining
Groundwater quality studies in mining areas and fluoride contaminated
areas
Preparation of a Gondwana fossil inventory of the State Odisha
Two copyrights (software) for meteorological modelling have been
awarded and one is applied
Applied patent in Marine water Ingression
