Mendooran Success Congratulations to ex- student Jesse Dennis who competed in the ABCRA National Rodeo finals in Tamworth in January. He won the 2019 ABCRA Australia 14-under 18 years Steer Riding Championship and was 3rd in the aggregate over the two days of finals. We are very proud of you Jesse. We are also very proud of our ex English Teacher, Susan Francis, who has had a book titled “The Love That Remains” published. I was amongst some locals who attended the book launch. The book has been very popular and has sold out in many locations. Well done Suz!
Late Arrivals Please ensure all students arrive at school on time, as being late means missing valuable learning time. School begins at 9am every day.
Signing In Please ensure visitors to the school sign in and out at the Front Office. This is vital for WH&S.
Paperwork Could all paperwork, including local excursion, medical notes and permission to publish notes, be returned to the school as soon as possible.

Sport News This Friday, 14th February, is our annual Swimming Carnival at the Mendooran Pool. Years 3 to 12 are invited to meet at the pool from 8:30am. Please check with your bus driver as to whether they will be dropping students at the pool in the morning and picking up in the afternoon. A teacher will be walking to the pool with any students who are dropped at school. Infant students are to arrive at school as per a normal school day, they will join our big carnival around lunch time. Students may wear house colours on the day. Blue for Beni and Red for Goonoo. Please ensure your child has sleeves on their top to reduce exposure to sun. Students are to bring a hat, sunscreen, plenty of water, swimmers and a towel. The school canteen will be open at the pool on the day with a modified menu. I encourage parents and carers to come down to the pool on the day, our school carnivals are always an awesome day of fun and the students thrive on your support. The rain is always welcome and our carnival will run if it is light showering on the day, please check our Facebook page on the day for any updates. Looking forward to a fantastic day on Friday.

Best Start Year 7 Assessment Dear Parents and Carers, Year 7 students will participate in the Best Start Year 7 Assessment in Term 1, 2020. Best Start Year 7 is an online literacy and numeracy assessment available to secondary schools that assesses key literacy and numeracy skills of Year 7 students. It is designed to assist teachers to identify students who may require additional support in developing their literacy and numeracy skills. The purpose of the Best Start Year 7 assessment is to provide feedback to teachers to help identify student needs. Feedback will be provided to teachers who may choose to share this with students, parents and carers during teacher interview processes. Best Start Year 7 is just one of a range of assessments the school uses to assess students. These tests will occur this week, during Periods 1 & 2 on Tuesday and Wednesday (11th and 12th February). If you have any questions or queries please do not hesitate to contact me at the school on 68861149. M. Galiatsatos
English Homework Every week students in Years 7-10 are given ten spelling words. It is expected that they study these words and submit the definitions for these words every Friday. This is done to improve student vocabulary, which in turn will be reflected in their writing skills. The Secondary English Spelling Program covers outcomes EN4-3B and EN5-3B. M. Galiatsatos
Uniform We have a mandatory uniform which must be worn by all students at Mendooran Central School. There is simply no excuse for students to continually be out of uniform. All uniform is available from the school office for purchase. If you require assistance in purchasing this uniform please do not hesitate to ask. We are able to help supply the correct uniform when needed. Hooded jumpers are not a part of our uniform and therefore should not be worn, this is not only an MCS rule but a Department Policy. This rule also applies to sporting representative jumpers/clothing, tights, short shorts and multi-coloured scarves. Students not in uniform will be questioned as to why they are not complying with the school rules, and they will be given a time period within which they will be required to correct the infraction. M. Galiatsatos & G. Standing Uniform Coordinators

ABCRA AUSTRALIAN CHAMPION - JESSE DENNIS
This year’s ABCRA National Rodeo Finals capped off a stellar year on the rodeo circuit for MCS student, Jesse Dennis, culminating in Jesse taking out the 14-U18 Steer Ride and being crowned the Australian Champion for 2019.
Jesse, a second generation cowboy, spent many weekends travelling across Australia to compete in his chosen sport under the guidance of his dad, Tim Dennis.
Jesse achieved his goal of going into the finals in top position. Competition was very close all season with Jesse and Braith Nock going head to head each round in hopes of getting those high scores to become champion. Over the two nights of finals, Jesse won the first night with a top score of 75 and scored 68 on the second night. This was enough to place him third in the aggregate and secured his placing as Australian Champion.
Jesse would like to thank everyone that has shown him support and in particular his sponsors, Les Parnaby and Josh Birks. Jesse said “Winning the title means a lot and I wouldn’t have been able to do it without these people: Tristan Halden, Darcy Weber, Matt and Kylie Weber, Bronwyn and Brenden Halden and of course my mum and dad for carting me around all year, it means a lot so thank you everyone!”
