Pre-Convention Workshops April 30, 2015

Thursday 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Thursday Classes

TH1 – Thread Spool House (LED Lit) by Charlotte Atcher Class Fee: $137 A life-sized thread spool sits atop a reel of ribbon with tiny quilts hanging from a needle and thread line. This two-story spool house is lit by two LED’s with the electrical components cleverly hidden in the ribbon reel base. As a special treat, the electrical connections will be pre-assembled prior to the workshop. Many components are laser cut for ease of construction. A supply list will be provided prior to the houseparty. Minimum Skill Level: intermediate 1/144” scale

TH2 – Come Ride the Carousel by Callie Brunelli Class Fee: $87 Recreate those lost summer days at the fair– ride a Carousel & reach for the gold ring! You’ll make a Carousel from a laser-cut kit. You’ll use the pieces of the kit, plus extra provided materials & your own imagination, to create a unique piece. You’ll also get your choice of a child to ride your carousel to add to the fun. The lore & history of hand-carved vintage carousels will be incorporated in the process based on information from the “Carousel Capital of the World” (my hometown), Binghamton, NY. The carousel, base, limited landscape materials, & ONE child are included…along with suggestions for adding lighting & music later if you choose. Minimum Skill Level: beginner 1/144” scale

TH3 – Down on the Farm by Teresa Callender Class Fee: $70 To prepare for a county fair, most projects start “down on the farm.” Wake up in a room that has the feel of a farm. As you enter through a barn door, the floor resembles grass. Three separate walls are engraved with birds on branches. You can use all three engraved walls or flip them over for bare walls…or a combination of the two. Set your books or toys on a barn-shaped floor shelf which is engraved with barn doors & a picket fence. The picket fence theme is carried through on the toy box. Hang your clothes on an animal-themed coat rack. This versatile theme room can be used in many settings – a nursery for baby, bedroom for a toddler, playroom, or preschool room. Minimum Skill Level: beginner ¼” scale

TH4 – ½” Fun Fair Foods by Carolyn Eiche Class Fee: $62 Join Carolyn in making items that can be used in a fair booth, snack stand, diner, or anywhere else you can think of. You will make a popcorn machine, cotton candy machine, nacho warming machine, root beer barrel, hamburger & hotdog grills, and a hanging ice cream cone dispenser….all of the things you need for a great country fair booth! Minimum Skill Level: beginner 1/2” scale

TH5 – Ginger & Pickles Shop by Sue Herber Class Fee: $126 This little English shop is inspired by Beatrix Potter’s story about a cat & dog who own a little stone shop. The front door has a large bay display window, hand-carved sign, and wisteria vines that crawl over the door & window & down the side wall. There are an additional two floors above the shop where Ginger & Pickles live. Also included are the six store fixtures – two large shelf units, a counter, two small wall shelves, & an additional smaller carved sign. Minimum Skill Level: beginner ¼” scale

TH6 – The Bistro Garden by Ginger Landon-Siegel Class Fee: $97 This off-the-beaten-path garden courtyard, in a corner of Paris, is surrounded by picturesque facades of quaint hotels, bistros, & a classic wine shop. An afternoon stroll on the faux painted cobblestone walkways is a perfect place to spend a warm summer day. Students will create the facades using layered dimensional techniques that will be enhanced with greenery, floral pieces, lace, & wire. You will also create a stone-look fountain for the center of your courtyard. Students will learn paper cutting, layering, & dimensional techniques that can be applied to future projects of their own. Minimum Skill Level: intermediate ¼” scale

TH7 – Garden Retreat by Winifred Schmidt Class Fee: $47 A stone path winds through a garden of various plants & flowers to a cozy retreat with its inviting porch just waiting for a swing or a couple of comfy chairs. It’s all contained in a 5” x 7” frame. We’ll construct the structure & finish the outside, leaving the inside for you to do with as you choose…perhaps a tool shed, an art studio, or just a quiet place to read a book? Along with making the structure, we’ll make several types of flowers to plant in the garden. Dried plant material will be used to complete the garden retreat. Minimum Skill Level: beginner ¼” scale

TH8 – Blue Ribbon Pie & Jam by Debbie Young Class Fee: $112 She won so many blue ribbons at the County Fair for her pies & jams that she decided to open up a little shop. You can use the walk-up window to order your pie by the slice & eat it there – there is a lovely patio for just that! It’s a tiny shop – one room downstairs & it is painted dark red because it reminds her of raspberries. There are, of course, raspberries growing outside on the lattice (that is actually an orchard ladder turned upside down). Minimum Skill Level: beginner ¼” scale

Friday Classes

F1 – Roadside Vegetable Stand by Mary Banner Class Fee: $90 Roadside stands appear across the country every summer & into the fall…perfectly timed for the County Fair goers. The framed box, with background already in place, is 2 ¼” deep x 4 ½” long - plenty of room to display fruits, veggies, jellies, pumpkins, & anything else you might find for sale during this time of year. Participants will landscape & assemble the stand, fences, sunflowers, & bushel baskets. The fruit & vegetables to put in the crates & bushels will be provided. Minimum Skill Level: beginner ¼” scale in a 1” framed box F2 – “Simply Country” Shop by Karen Benson Class Fee: $87 While you are in Madison for the County Fair, you should also take some time for shopping at the many unusual local shops & boutiques. “Simply Country” should be on your “MUST STOP” list because it will probably be filled with a variety of country decorative furnishings & accessories. During the workshop, you’ll build this two-part structure. The exterior box is the front & sides and has posts & an awning; the interior box is slightly smaller & is the removable interior of the shop. No lighting is required because there is an acrylic-covered opening in the top. Included are all materials, paint, & glues to complete the shop as shown. The exterior is 6-1/4” W X 4” H X 3-1/4” D.. Minimum Skill Level: beginner ¼” scale

F3 – Bar in Vintage Match Box – Jukebox Side (2nd in series) by Callie Brunelli Class Fee: $62 Imagine walking into a vintage neighborhood bar, miniaturizing it & tucking it in your pocket!! Each participant will create the seating/music area of a neighborhood bar in a vintage Canadian Club matchbox, using some of the original matchsticks as construction materials. Private booths with tables & benches flank the vintage jukebox against poster-covered brick walls. Materials include wood strips, beads (both hole & no-hole), metal jewelry findings, wire & more. The entire scene, including the jukebox, will be built from scratch using no laser-cut pieces. (Second in a series of four) Minimum Skill Level: beginner 1/144” diorama or 1” accessory scale

F4 – Grandma’s Quilt Room by Kate Hruban Class Fee: $72 Come to the attic where Grandma makes her fabulous quilts to display at the County Fair. Let’s build a room just like it – we’ll wallpaper both a trunk & walls; make a window & chimney; dress a bed; paint a trunk; and build a table for the sewing machine & cutting table, shelving for quilt storage, & a toy box. All of this fits neatly in a camel-back trunk! Minimum Skill Level: beginner ¼” scale

F5 – A Picnic at the Fair by Jan Johnston Class Fee: $92 I submitted many 4-H projects to our local county fairs in my youth. My 4-H group always ate lunch at the Picnic Area. We’ll make a scene with a shade tree using preserved natural materials. We’ll “grow” grass, “plant” flowers, & make/finish a picnic table from a kit. Doll & dome are included (wooden base shown/glass dome not shown) . *The doll’s dress for this workshop is red….an exclusive, limited edition just for you. Minimum Skill Level: beginner ¼” scale F6 – ¼” Flower Cart for the Fair by Sally Manwell Class Fee: $42 Learn to make six different quarter scale flowers to fill the cart you put together from a laser-cut kit & then paint. You will use paper, paint, foam, & fabric to make the different flowers. Also learn how to make the baskets. Pots, the tall container for the sunflowers, & some foam filler flowers will be supplied. Please bring scissors, tweezers & a #3 paint brush. Minimum Skill Level: beginner ¼” scale F7 – Floor Plants by Charrita Teague Class Fee: $32 Floor plants accent any miniature setting! You will enjoy making a rubber tree plant & a variegated fishtail palm in class…with additional supplies to make more later. You will learn how to construct & paint the plants…and learn interesting plant facts while having fun doing it. Instructor will contact you regarding the scale you wish to work in. She enjoys having company at her arched door & charming little peaked-roof abode. She found an old picture frame for a window, some lace for a curtain, & bits of furniture to make it cozy. Her home comes complete with a stove & coffee pot, table & chairs, flower pot, hutch filled with dishes & food, ladder to a hammock bed, bedside shelf with lamp, & framed picture.
