As it was approaching the 70th anniversary of RAFLossiemouth, the Mountaineering Club looked to find asuitable expedition to both celebrate the event and tochallenge the club in both planning and execution. TheHimalayas has always been the ultimate destination for themajority of aspiring climbers and was a clear choice for themembers. Mera Peak, a 6400m trekking peak in the Makalu

Barun National Park ofNepal, matched all ofthe requirements of re-moteness, altitude, technical difficulty andaffordability and onceselected, the expeditionplanning began inearnest early in 2008.

Out of a group ofaround 30 applicants a

team of 12 was selected as expedition members based ontheir experience, ability, fitness, availability and what skills theycould bring along to increase the chance of success in theendeavour. Not all of those selected had been to altitudebefore and so training was carried out in the Alps in thesummer of 2009 to give those who required it experience inhigh altitude walking, rope work and crevasse rescue.

The expedition set off on Thursday 15th Oct 2009 whichis in the middle of the Nepalese post monsoon period andalthough this was the autumn and getting cold it wouldprovide a few weeks of settled dry weather. The team travelledto Kathmandu where we met Lakpa Tenji Sherpa, ourNepalese Sirdar, who was to be our guide on the expedition.Equipment was checked and repacked for the flight to Luklaand the team’s spirits were high as we left civilisation behindas we finally headed into the mountains.

Nepal is not a large country but getting around can beproblematic, the locals judge distances to the next village notin miles but in days travelled, for once in the mountains thereare no roads only tracks over high level passes and down lowvalleys. We spent 9 days trekking with our porters to get intoBase Camp on the mountain, although this was ideal accli-matisation training for the summit attempt. As we progressedup the mountain the difficulties increased, the falling airpressure and night time temperatures slowing our earlymorning exit from the warmth of our sleeping bags and dailyupward progress to little more than a crawl.

Summit day fell on 2nd Nov. We left our camp at 3 amhaving breakfasted on porridge and noodles and it was verydark, very windy and very cold. Moving as two roped partieswe climbed steadily but slowly up the mountain, the altitudeand incline taking a heavy toll on our progress, till at one pointI had to stop to throw up. Eventually the altitude put paid toany further progress for two of us and at 6300m we turned

back, we were only 140m from thetop. As we descended the sun risecame to warm us and our recoverystarted. We were soon joined by twoothers, one of whom had begun tofeel the first effects of frostbite on histoes and so took the sensibledecision to come down, only 100mfrom the top. As we sat in HighCamp enjoying a brew, we werereunited with the rest of the teamwho were also driven back down bythe cold, as they prepared to fixropes for the final part of the ascent, only 40m from the top.

It would seem that we had failed; we had not achievedour goal. In fact what had been the point, all that effort, months of planning and training, the worry for our familieswhen we lost communications, not to mention the cost?Maybe we should just have stayed at home; we could havejust gone for a walk up Ben Rinnes with the dogs!

But we didn’t, we went to the Himalayas, we took achallenge, we stepped out of the boat, out of the comfort zoneand did something amazing. Life is like that, you have tochallenge yourself or you aren’t moving forward, you aredying; standing still is not an option. You don’t need to go asfar as Nepal, maybe just a 5 minute jog on the beach, younever know where it might take you; the longest journey startswith the first step, but you only get out what you put in.

Although you can get out a whole lot more; filled up tooverflowing, packed down and topped up again. I have foundit is this way with my faith as a Christian, unless I challenge itand work at it, I so easily slip and the ways of the world comeflooding in and life seems to become so difficult. Nobody eversaid it would be easy but everyday I give thanks for a graciousand forgiving Lord who gives me the strength for the realchallenge. The truth is out there, if you are prepared to look.

The next day 3 of the guys felt strong enough for asecond attempt and summited easily on a beautiful, windlessand sunlit morning.

Pause and Reflect

At this season of the year many maketime and take time to pause and reflect. When King David reflected, he was ableto see the guiding hand of God in all hisexperiences. What are you aiming for as2010 starts? What is your personal goalfor 2010? It can depend much uponyour current circumstances.

The writer of Psalm 92 held various cer-tainties upon which it would be difficultto improve. He knew it was good topraise God. We praise God for what Hehas done, and worship Him because ofwho He is. The Psalmist was a worship-per who had good cause to praise theliving God. High on his agenda was hisdecision to proclaim the love of Godeach morning and the faithfulness ofGod at night before he fell asleep. Thisled him to be genuinely concernedabout the people around him, as herecognised so many were poor, perishing, and disappearing like grasson a hot middle eastern summer’s day.By contrast, the righteous would flourishlike a palm tree and grow like a cedar ofLebanon.

The palm tree is beautiful, majestic, talland with branches stretching upwardslike hands in worship. Its deep rootssearch for moisture indicating a placewhere the weary traveller can find re-freshing reviving water.

The cedar grows slowly and is able towithstand all kinds of wet cold chal-lenging conditions. These trees have anundecaying quality about them. Ofcourse, note where they were planted -in the house of the Lord. Where you areplanted matters, if you want to bear fruitand make your life count for God. Areyou still looking for a goal for 2010?Become an encourager. There are lotsof vacancies. Not many apply for thisrole. God is the God of the secondchance and even the third chance, butwe never know when it will be our finalchance!

Nearing the end of his life, when Paulwrote to young Timothy, he said, “I havefought the good fight, I have finished therace, I have kept the faith”, 2 Timothy4:7

To fight the good fight, and to finish therace, it is essential to keep the faith. Donot give up. Here are positive pointersto encourage you and to enable you togo on encouraging other peoplethroughout 2010.

• Be regular at worship.• Be faithful in prayer. That will take timediscipline and effort.• Be in the Word of God every day.Read part of the Bible each day.

I do not remember what I had for luncha year ago, but I know it did me good atthe time. I do not remember what I reada year ago but I know it did me good atthe time.

Let me encourage you to set reason-able goals, which are possible to keep, and goals which will benefit you in everyarea of life. Pause and reflect. Decideyour priorities. Aim to be the best thatyou can be, for Jesus Christ.

Braised Belly of Pork with Herb Crust

This spectacular dish regularly appears on ourChapter One menus. Belly Pork may be a cheapercut but responds beautifully to slow gentlecooking becoming meltingly tender. You mayneed to order this cut in advance from yourbutcher. You can serve it with potato puree, lightly wilted spinach and fresh herb tagliatelle.

Pork4 tablespoons Olive Oil1 whole belly joint about 1 kg1 Carrot chopped1 Onion chopped1 Leek chopped1 Celery Stick chopped100ml Sherry Vinegar200ml Soy Sauce1.5 litres Chicken Stock

Crust100g Fresh Basil100g Fresh Coriander100g Fresh Bread Crumbs100g Parmesan

Heat a shallow, flameproof, cast ironcasserole or deep sauté pan with lid until you feela strong heat rising. Add 2 tablespoons olive oiland brown the pork joint, turning until caramelizedall over. Remove and place on a plate.

Add the remaining olive oil to the pan andsauté the vegetables for about 5 minutes.

Deglaze with sherry vinegar and cook untilreduced to half. Then return the pork joint to thepan placing on top of the vegetables. Pour in the

soy sauce and stock. Bring to the boil andpartially cover the pan. Braise slowly at a lowheat, or in the oven at 170C/gas mark 3. Cook for2 ½ - 3 hours. Baste the pork occasionally withthe pan juices, until the meat feels very tender.Lift out the meat and cut in to 4 even squarepieces and set aside.

Put basil, coriander, bread crumbs andparmesan in food processor and blitz until you geta crumble texture. Heap the mixture on top ofeach slice of pork belly and place in oven on abaking tray at 200c for 5 minutes and crust shouldform. Remove from oven and serve with fresh herbtagliatelle.

EXTRACTS FROM THE DRAFT MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF 24TH NOVEMVBER 2009 OF NAIRN SUBURBAN COMMUNITY COUNCIL

Matters ArisingSandown Lands ~ The Reporter held ameeting on 16th November in the GolfView and set out the framework for thePlanning Inquiry which will start on 9th.March 2010, venue to be determined, but probably the Newton Hotel. NSCCwill submit a ‘precognition statement’and will speak at the Inquiry to representthe “man in the street”. Mr. John Hart willrepresent Nairn Concerned Resident’sGroup who will be prime speakers andonce they have gathered all theirevidence, we will review it and if appro-priate, submit a letter of support onbehalf of NSCC.A96 & Bypass update ~ HighlandCouncil has sent in the proposedBypass lines to Transport Scotland, withthe M20 option being favoured. Oncethis has been accepted by TransportScotland moves will be taken to protectthe line from Development. C. Cllr JohnMackie reported that the ongoing workto replace street lighting along the A96was causing concern. Some of the‘lamp-posts’ have been placed in themiddle of the footpath instead of at theback. This is a “hazard” that has beencreated and Bear Scotland; TransportScotland as well as the MSP’s havebeen written to, asking why this hasbeen done. He also pointed out that thetraffic islands on both sides of Somer-field’s Garage have been madenarrower, which is even more dangerousthan when we last carried out a survey. We had been told that the junction wasto be widened at Duncan Drive and the

islands made wider, but the oppositeappears to have happened. BrianStewart also pointed out that the lamp-post on the footpath immediately to thewest of the exit from Somerfield’sGarage was in a driver’s field of vision.C.C. Boundaries ~ C. Cllr. John Mackiegave a report on the joint meeting heldbetween Nairnshire C.C’s to discuss thematter. The C.C.’s will report back totheir Councils and we will meet againafter the Ward Forum meeting on 16th.December to hopefully agree our sub-missions to The Highland Council. Wesuggested that our boundary (Nairn)should follow the line of the Bypass(whichever is finally agreed).Highland Wide Development PlanUpdate ~ Our thoughts on the consulta-tion have been submitted and we nowlook forward to the next phase which willcover the local plan. This part will be ofmore interest to us locally and we will beconsulting on the issues when thesecome round.

CorrespondenceC. Cllr. John Mackie read out the variousitems of correspondence, and thatStagecoach have been asked for ameeting as they still appear to beblaming us for the No. 11 bus route. There are issues surrounding the recentunannounced changes to the No. 10 &305 buses through Nairn as well.Letters have also been sent to BearScotland; Transport Scotland and ourMSP’s re. “Nairn Street Lighting”.

Chair’s ReportC.Cllr. John Mackie gave a resume onthe Association of Scottish CommunityCouncils Conference held in ScottishParliament, Holyrood on 14th.November 2009. It was a long day andnot many representatives from the northmade the trip, however, it was worth-while even to hear the problems of otherC.C.’s, which were more or less thesame as our own. A recent project heldin Moray to promote C.C.’s resulted in avery successful election with a turnout ofaround 75%. One of the speakers, JohnMayhew of The Association for the Pro-tection of Rural Scotland was of greatinterest and NSCC intend joining thisgroup and to arrange a meeting withthem to take guidance on SandownLands development as we feel they cangive us good advice on how to proceed.C.Cllr Mackie also apologised to CllrLaurie Fraser, and to Mrs. Hart who hadturned up for a meeting in October 2009.We had received a telephone call fromNairn Academy advising that there hadbeen a “Double Booking” error and thatwe could not hold our meeting and nosuitable alternative date could be found.Sincere apologies to both.

Treasurers ReportC. Cllr. Dick Youngson reported that wehave £733.47 in our account.

The next meeting of Nairn SuburbanCommunity Council will be Tuesday 26thJanuary 2010 at 7.30pm.
