PAINTING A PICTURE FOR THE SUMMER
Inspired by the sunny season, NAE present a vibrant new programme of exhibitions, family activities, community events, festivals and more!
Hurvin Anderson fi lls our gallery with abstract paintings that piece together fragmented memories and identities recalling his Jamaican heritage. The exhibition also features a special new commission. In Dissonance, Beverley Bennett’s drawings inspire a diverse range of Nottingham-based creatives. Sumiko Eadon uses screen printing to revisit images trapped on fading technologies, and Threshold Studios present a snapshot of Cuba through fi rst-hand accounts from within the nation, displayed in our Mezzanine Gallery.
For families Superhero Saturday returns, as well as our popular Saturday Art Club, and we o� er even more activities throughout the school holidays! Also, look out for the UK’s oldest Mela Festival celebrating South Asian culture!

NAE first presented Hurvin Anderson’s work in our 2012 exhibition I Is Another, a group show which marked 50 years of Jamaica’s independence from the UK. This summer we explore Anderson’s practice in depth through a solo exhibition of both existing and newly commissioned works, along with a host of materials that create a behind-the-scenes glimpse of Anderson’s forensic making process. This element includes sketches and preparatory paintings, collages, drawings and photographs, never displayed before in the UK.
Born in Birmingham to Jamaican parents, the focus of Anderson’s work often stems from his experiences growing up within Birmingham’s African-Caribbean community in the 1970s and 1980s, and his time spent living in Trinidad as an artist in residence. As such, his work engages with charged social histories, notions of cultural identity and themes of memory, place and time.

At the heart of the exhibition is the new painting, Is It Okay To Be Black? (2016). This piece has been commissioned to celebrate the 70th Anniversary of the Arts Council Collection. Now numbering nearly 8,000 works, the Arts Council Collection is the largest national loan collection of modern and contemporary art and includes many of the most important and influential British artists from the mid-twentieth century to the present day. Dub Versions has been supported by Thomas Dane Gallery.
Hurvin Anderson will lead a gallery tour of his work on Saturday 9 July (see page 10).
Anderson typically creates works in series, and returns to subjects, memories and settings that continue to intrigue him to create new collections. The pieces presented in Dub Versions, grew out of a re-investigation into two previous bodies of work; the first, a series depicting Anderson’s brother scrumping for fruit, and the second, illustrations of domestic barbershops, a cottage industry taken up by many newly arrived Caribbean immigrants in the 1950s. For Anderson, these moments and spaces provoked questions of how personal and perceived identities continue to shift as time and place change, particularly in the context of the Black-British experience. He describes the act of painting and drawing as a way of seeing, so in Dub Versions, he returns to these settings, taking them apart and adding new layers, to look again and reveal more about the world in which we live.

In addition, the audience itself is also invited to become part of the creative collaborative process by taking part in a spoken-word project that will be performed during the launch of the show. In the gallery space, visitors can interact via dance and movement with a 3D sculptural piece in the form of a dance fl oor.
The artists collaborating with Beverley Bennett are: Antonio Abatangelo, Chiara Dellerba (see page 12), Rob Flint, Jess Murray and David 'Stickman' Higgins (see page 13), and Honey Williams.

Beverley Bennett makes monochrome, abstract drawings where layers of pigment and repetitive mark-making add a sense of power and energy to the surface of the paper. Her artworks have been described as having an almost audible quality which inspired Bennett to explore how her drawings can infl uence and transform into other mediums such as sound.
Here in Dissonance, Bennett has taken this idea a step further by collaborating with a number of Nottingham-based artists across di� erent art forms to explore how her drawings can be a catalyst for the creative process. Each artist/collaborator has been given the task of reconfi guring Bennett’s drawings into a graphic score and/or interpreting the drawings into their medium of choice including dance, poetry and sculpture.

Working with artists and communities across Cuba, media arts producers Threshold Studios introduce the first in a series of collaborative projects presenting a multi-faceted snapshot of a country undergoing social, political and economic transformation following the lifting of the United States' trade embargo. Stepping out of cultural and political isolation for the first time in over half a century, as the internet and global cultural influence begins to spread across the country, Threshold are assisting Cuban communities to voice the impact of that change from their own perspectives; documenting their lives, opinions, hopes and concerns as they look towards a new, fast approaching future. Threshold invite audiences to connect directly to Cuba through the eyes of its artists and communities, capturing life as it was, is, and will be, as the tide of history sweeps through Cuban society.

EXHIBITION LAUNCH

Sumiko Eadon, NAE Prize winner of Nottingham Castle Open 2014, presents Screenplay, a series of screen prints inspired by the architecture of NAE’s building. The wide windows and the staircases of our Central Gallery transported Eadon back to her childhood in Japan, where she played ‘cops and robbers’ in the corridors and staircases of the apartment block she grew up in.
The images within Eadon's artworks have been created through a layering process, moving from mechanical technologies through to digital, and back to handmade. Eadon started with stills from 8mm films created by her father between 1969-1989, which were converted to VHS, and then DVD. Eadon then photographed these stills through the computer screen before incorporating them into hand prints.
Join us for a special launch event, or try woodcut printing in a one-o� workshop led by the artist (see page 14).

Join exhibiting artist Hurvin Anderson as he discusses the development of his painting practice and explores the significance of his latest commission by NAE and the Arts Council Collection. Hurvin’s work is often described as marrying Britain and the Caribbean together, and lush landscapes and urban barbershops will fill our gallery spaces. Reflecting on Beverley’s drawing practice and her collaborators’ creative interpretations of these expressive, abstract lines and marks, Beverley and Rob will draw out the key themes and dynamics of the exhibition. ASHOK KHOSLA LIVE: GHAZALPERFORMANCE

NAE is pleased to present Ashok Khosla, one of India’s finest Ghazal singers. Ghazal originated in ancient Arabic poetry and moved to South Asia where it was influenced by Sufism. INVISIBLE THINGS WORKSHOP / ACCESS

Multidisciplinary artist Priya Mistry explores how to create a visual vocabulary from the invisible experiences of depression and anxiety. Mistry is interested in how day-to-day life evokes emotions which occupy our bodies – be that within your stomach, heart or mind. This workshop aims to draw out and explore how we make those very invisible experiences into something more visual and tangible through objects and mark-making. We invite participants to bring an object that evokes a strong emotion.

English language learners are invited to join this creative workshop led by artist and experienced discussion group leader, Linda Graham. TREASURES IN THE ARCHIVES TALK / PERFORMANCE

Black Cultural Archive presents a double dose of history. Emma Harrison will talk about the life of Phillis Wheatley including her work as a poet in Treasures in the Archive, talks on tour. This is followed by Nottingham Black Archive who will share their pilot project, Write Black to the Beginning, documenting Black writers in Nottingham. There will be discussions, presentations, performances and book stalls.

Dissonance collaborative artist Chiara Dellerba leads this workshop, pushing the boundaries of drawing through movement and performative gesture. The workshop aims to reprogramme the ‘machine’ of the body as an uninhibited, fluid vehicle for expression on paper. Working individually and in groups, join Chiara to experiment with shape, movement and the limits of your body. No prior drawing experience needed. Please dress comfortably.

Join Dissonance artist Jess Murray as she leads a tap dance workshop for beginners with a live band, and then see how it's really done in a performance of Untold Rhythm, as Jess is joined by David 'Stickman' Higgins and Andy Metcalfe to create a world-class trio. The Freedom Project is a residency for emerging artists from the Midlands, led by Nottingham-based artist Rachael Young. NAE host an afternoon of interactive encounters exploring ideas of freedom and repression. Expect a collection of one-on-one performances, installations and durational work followed by a panel discussion with Rachael and Philosophy lecturer at Birmingham University Dr Harjeet Marway, exploring freedom in relation to gender, race and ideas of beauty.

Exhibiting artist and Leicester Print Workshop resident, Sumiko Eadon, leads this introductory woodcut workshop.
