Art NACOhttp://artcataloging.net/artnaco.html

• workshop 2000

• examples of 670s

• “other resources” such as Getty vocabularies, biographical resources, geographic links

• duplicate authority records

• notes from training at Met

Reference works & citations

• Thieme-Becker

• Bénézit (include edition)

• Grove (“How to cite” on home page, revised to NACO 670 = Grove art online, [date] $b [data])

• Intern. dir. of arts, [year]: $b v. [#], p. [#] ([data])– give volume and page particularly when not clear if museum or

gallery

• WwasW in Amer. art, 1985 $b ([data])

• WW in Amer. art, 2001/2002 $b ([data])

NAF/SAF

• subject headings officially outside of scope for Art NACO but advice cheerfully given

• H405 and “The divided world” (list also appears in MARC documentation)

• SACO proposals need at least one extra 67X

• buildings

– buildings as exhibition venues

• ancient sites (GeoNet: PPL vs ANS)

• artist groups

Possible sources for extra 670s for buildings

• architectural guides, e.g. Pevsner, Guide rionali di Roma

• tourist guides (caution: language)

• WWW &c (as always, use judgment)

SH proposal for Tall Jidr

151 Tall Jidr (Extinct city)

451 Tell Gidr (Extinct city)

670 [work cataloged]

670 GeoNet, June 13, 2005 $b (Tall Jidr [Iraq]; variant: Tell Gidr; ANS; 31° 51' 00" N 045° 58' 00" E) [use superscript zero for degrees, miagkyi znak for minutes, tverdyi znak for seconds]

Artists

• usage and the non-verbal context

– 22.1B: base heading on usage on works in the artist’s language; for those working in non-verbal context, base heading on reference works

• contemporary artists (don’t worry too much about reference works but I would try to find life date(s) if not in item being cataloged)

Artist groups

• groups should be established in SAF according to H405

• if group has issued manifestoes or otherwise acted as author (used as 110 or 710), you can slip it into NAF

• duos are ok in NAF

Galleries and museums

• qualifiers are not necessary unless name is weak

– if gallery moves, the qualifier can be problematic

– if gallery has two locations, use judgment on value of two records

• 24.13 and 24.18, Type 3 (general name)

– Museum of Fine Arts (Saint Petersburg, Fla.)

– Museum of Fine Arts, Boston

– Bordeaux (France). Musée des beaux-arts

Named collection?

• generally use name divided by “– Art collections” rather than establishing a collection

RLIN21 client for NACO

• account needs to be enabled for NACO

• profile needs to be created for NAF input; defaults can be changed

• save status as default linked to profile (impetus for separate profile for NACO work)

• templates

• input set to include NAF

• default input

• SAVE mode as default

• template (under default session settings)

GENerating an authority record

• if your user ID and logon profile are established for NAF input, you will get a checkmark next to any heading which is valid for name authority record; clicking on checkmark opens record with some fields filled in

Records ready for review?

• internal review for those institutions with two or more catalogers

• send email to reviewer with record IDs and headings

• status s

• pending heading

• work in save, then producing (new pending search before production)

• BFM (bibliographic file maintenance)

Devoted to the PCC cause?

• don’t fret if you can’t do complete NACO for a title?

– provisional record sometimes the answer

• good bib record does help the cause even if no authority record for heading(s)
