Whether it’s the feel-good factor or consideration of the bottom line, going green is a growing business trend. Mayor's MessageWith growing concerns about

the state of the economy, it was heartening to examine various res-idential and commercial projects underway throughout the city last year and see the investment that homeowners, private companies and non-profit agencies continue to make in Warwick.

A review of the Building Department’s listing of commer-cial projects, including new con-struction, renovations or additions to existing structures and hotels/motels, shows private developers’ investment of over $77.3 million in 2007. These figures don’t take into account new or major improve-ments to residential buildings or other miscellaneous projects, which total nearly $33 million.

Warwick’s business base is a wide-ranging mix of small com-

panies, retail, office parks and tourism-related enterprises. All of these are reflected in 2007 invest-ments here, with projects rang-ing from a 4,250 square-foot facil-ity to two office buildings, total-ing 200,000 square feet, near the Crowne Plaza Hotel. One of the buildings – at 120,000 square feet – will be home to Davol Inc.’s world headquarters.

Warwick is also home to Kent Hospital, which serves residents in the greater Kent County region, and a growing need for medical office space is clearly evident. Roughly half a dozen facilities have either been completed or are under construction and are located not far from the hospital’s com-plex.

On the Border and Chipolte’s restaurants were completed last

year, and work on a Texas Road House restaurant began on the Warwick/East Greenwich border before the New Year. Area resi-dents are eagerly awaiting comple-tion of the NYLO Hotel and other facilities at historic Pontiac Mills, as well as renovations to Warwick Mall, which will soon welcome Target as one of its anchor stores.

As 2008 progresses, there are a number of exciting projects in the planning stages, with developers working with a variety of munici-pal offices to secure the appropri-ate permits and approvals.

As always, our Department o f To u r i s m , C u l t u r e a n d Development stands ready to assist new or existing businesses. Please do not hesitate to contact them at (401) 738-2000, ext. 6404 or www.movetowarwickri.com.

MAYOR SCOTT AVEDISIAN

Two new electronic filing require-ments for tax-exempt organizations went into effect after December 2006.

First, certain tax-exempt organiza-tions will have a new filing requirement imposed by the Pension Protection Act of 2006. For tax periods beginning after Dec. 31, 2006, tax-exempt organizations

whose gross receipts are normally less than $25,000 must electronically file an annual notice. The IRS is developing a filing system for the annual electronic notice and will publicize filing proce-dures upon completion of the filing system.

For the latest information about fil-

ing the annual electronic notice, check the Exempt Organizations Web site at www.irs.gov.eo.

Second, some tax-exempt organiza-tions will be required to electronically file their Forms 990. For tax years end-ing on or after Dec. 31, 2006, tax-exempt organizations will be required to e-file if they have $10 million or more in total assets and file 250 or more returns a year. In addition, private foundations and charitable trusts will be required to e-file Forms 990-FP regardless of their asset size, if they file at least 25 returns.

For a small business, tak-ing the first steps into adver-tising can be an intimidat-ing and mysterious process. Even though we see adver-tising everywhere, creating and using ads ourselves can seem alien and expensive. Understanding how the medium works and what it can and cannot do for a small business is tougher than it seems…and there’s always uncertainty over results.

Think of advertising as one element of the broader area of marketing. You recognize it in many forms, including maga-zines, newspapers, directo-ries, online search engine ads, Web site banners, radio spots, TV, billboards, flyers, direct mail and others. Before you spend your hard-earned money on advertising, you’ll want to investigate what to realistically expect. Only then should you draw up a plan for moving ahead.

Advertising can do the fol-lowing:

• Attract new customers, prospect and leads• Encourage existing cus-tomers to spend more on your product or service• Build credibility, estab-lish and maintain your “ b r a n d ” o r u n i q u e business identity, and enhance your reputation • Inform or remind cus-tomers and prospects of the benefits your busi-ness has to offer • Promote your business to customers, investors and others, and slowly build sales

But here’s what advertising probably can’t do:

• Create an instant cus-tomer base• Solve your cash flow or profit problems by pro-ducing an immediate sales windfall • Cure poor or indifferent customer service • Create benefits that don’t really exist, or sell products and services that nobody wants

In short, advertising won’t

guarantee quick sales for your product or service by itself, but it will get you noticed if you do it right. That means you must know, as precisely as possible, the demographics of your target audience and craft a precise message about your product or service that will touch them. You must give customers a compelling reason to call, visit your Web site or stop by your business.

Your ad must also stand out in some way. If it fails to grab your potential cus-tomers, they’re not likely to

respond. Frequency is also key. A single ad in one place won’t do much. Getting peo-ple to see your ads as often as possible in different places will deliver better results.

With the cost of prescription drugs soaring, many people are looking for ways to save money at the pharmacy. These tips can help lower the amount you pay out of pocket:

• Consider generic drugs. Next time you fill a prescription, ask your pharmacist or doctor whether a gener-ic equivalent is available. If a generic isn’t available for the specific drug you’re taking, ask whether there is another generic that could treat your condition. Brand-name drugs, like any brand name product, are more expen-sive because of advertising costs, as well as the cost of research and devel-opment. According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), generic drug co-payments are much lower than co-payments for brand drug names. A generic drug is essential-ly the same drug as its brand name

equivalent. It has the same active ingredients, is equally effective and is approved by the FDA.

• Try mail order. All Blue Cross Blue Shield of Rhode Island (BCBSRI) mem-bers who have prescription drug cover-age can order drugs through WellPoint Pharmacy Management’s PrecisionRx program. If you take daily maintenance medication for chronic conditions such as high blood pressure or diabetes, con-sider using PrecisionRx. The medica-tion is shipped to your home, and you may pay a lower co-payment than at the pharmacy.

• Ask your doctor about over-the-counter (OTC) drugs. Sometimes, an OTC drug can be just as effective as a prescription drug for certain minor conditions, such as a cough or a runny nose. Frequently, they cost less than a co-payment. Ask your doctor if an OTC drug would work for you.

• Talk to your doctor about healthy lifestyle changes. Many health prob-

lems, such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol, may be helped by eat-ing a more nutritious diet, exercising more and reducing stress. Talk to your doctor about how you can reduce your need for medication or even stop tak-ing medications altogether. However, don’t stop taking medications without speaking to your doctor, even if you think your condition is under control.

• Take medications as prescribed. When you take certain medications, such as antibiotics, it’s important to finish all of the medicine prescribed, even if you are feeling better. If you don’t, you could end up taking a sec-ond round of medicine. Taking medica-tion incorrectly can also lead to other health problems, which can hurt both your health and your wallet.

During the coldest of winter months, a rise in your heating bill isn’t the only thing to worry about. Turning up the thermostat can drastically increase your chances of carbon monoxide (CO) poi-soning.

C O i s a c o l o r -less, odorless, taste-less, toxic gas, which according to the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission, takes 140 lives per year. By entering your lungs and displac-ing the oxygen from your bloodstream, CO interrupts your nor-mal supply of oxygen to the heart, brain and other vital organs.

Produced by the incomplete com-bustion of gas, oil, coal, wood, gas-fired appliances, charcoal grills, wood-burning furnaces or fireplaces, and motor vehicles, CO can accumulate in your home and put your family at risk. Therefore, a CO detector is essential to detect traces of CO in your home.

Mild CO exposure can cause side effects that are often mistaken for the flu, including a slight headache, nausea and fatigue. Moderate exposure to CO can cause a severe throbbing headache,

drowsiness, confusion, vomiting and increased heart rate. Extreme exposure to CO can cause unconsciousness, con-vulsions, cardio respiratory failure and death.

If your CO detector alarm sounds, turn off all your appliances, open the windows and doors, and evacuate everyone from your home. Once you and your family are out of the house, call 911 immediately.

• Soda contains no nutrients, and is high in calories and sugar. Studies show a strong link between soda consump-tion and childhood obesity.

• Soda suppresses the appe-tite so kids are less likely to eat nourishing foods. Soda drinkers are less likely to get the recommended levels of vitamin A, calcium and magnesium.

• Phosphorus, a common ingredient in soda, depletes calcium in the bones. Girls who dr ink more soda are more prone to bro-ken bones. Doctors are becoming concerned about the health impact of carbonated beverage consumption on teen-age girls.

• Studies show a direct link between tooth decay and soda. Not only does the sugar cause cavities, the acids in soda erode tooth enamel, which begins in only 20 minutes.

• Caffeine is known to create

physical dependence, and upsets the normal balance of neurochemistry in the devel-oping brains of children. Caffeine stimulates the adre-nal gland without providing the nourishment it needs. In large amounts, caffeine can lead to adrenal exhaustion, especially in children. Colas contain 35 to 38 milligrams of caffeine per 12-ounce can.

• Drinking a lot of soda every day can lead to blood sugar

disorders,

including diabetes. • Aspartame, used in diet

sodas, is a potent brain toxin and endocrine disrupter.

• Citric acid, often found in soda, may contain traces of MSG. MSG is another potent brain toxin. The artificial fla-vors found in soda may also contain traces of MSG.

• Drinking sodas regularly can upset the fragile, acid-alka-line balance of the stomach,

creating a continuous acid environment. This pro-longed acid environment

can lead to inflammation of the stomach and duodenal lining, which can be quite painful.

• Sodas act as dehydrating diuretics, much like tea, coffee and alcohol, and can inhibit proper digestive function.

The future of the office cube

Combining advanced materials, tech-nology and sociological research, look for your cube to shrink in size, but be more hip in the future. According to a Time magazine story “Redrawing the Cube,” by Lisa Takeuchi Cullen, cubes are here to stay, but they will be trans-forming in possibly intriguing ways in the near future. Here are some cube facts and possibilities:

• Seventy percent of office workers sit in cubes

• In the 1970s, a typical workstation was 12 feet by 12 feet

• In 1995, a typical workstation was 10 feet by 10 feet

• Today’s workstations average six feet by eight feet, and cube planners say they can reduce the space by 21 percent without reducing productivity

• Forty-five percent of workers say they do their best work in their own personal space

• The top complaint when it comes to privacy? Overheard conversations, par-ticularly loud cell phone talkers

New cube features to look forward to include:

• Desks that have adjustable heights• Colored overhead lighting panels.

Green means you are available to talk. Red means you are busy and not to be bothered

• Semi-enclosed areas for cell phone use — areas will enhance signal boost-ers and reduce the level of noise

• Translucent cubes that allow for a view, but also include doors to increase sound privacy

• Enclosed seating areas, where peo-ple can get together for chats without disturbing their neighbors

• Get ready for yurts, shell-like enclo-sures that muffle noise and provide some privacy for small groups

• Individual desktop temperature controls

According to the index, Rhode Island placed third in the amount of science and engineering

degrees awarded per 100,000 inhabitants and placed fifth in NIH support.

Rhode Island’s improve-ment in the rankings rein-forces that leadership must aggressively continue with efforts to help Rhode Island businesses transition from an old industrial economy to a new knowledge-driven inno-vation economy, and contin-ue to promote new company creation in innovation-econo-my industries.

The report also cited Rhode Island’s low crime and mur-der indexes. The state also fared well in the human resources subindex, placing 15th overall in the category. According to the human resources subindex, the num-ber of people without health insurance in the state is the lowest in the nation.

Rhode Island also ranked well for the percent of the

populat ion enrol led in degree-granting institu-tions (fifth), the percent of adults who are in the labor force (17th) and the rate of non-federal physicians per 100,000 inhabitants (sixth).

Rhode Island has seen $7 billion in new investment since 2005, including new or planned buildings, new industrial developments, expansion of existing com-panies, and private invest-ment in infrastructure. The economy has created many new jobs — more than 20,000 from 2002 to 2006, and 5,700 in 2006 alone, which was the fastest job growth rate in New England. These fac-tors were contributors to improvements in Rhode Island’s ranking.
