1 : Abstract The development of pu constructions in conversations between adults and a child aged 1;8 to 4;0 years is traced, with the aim of contributing to the description and explanation of the acquisition of grammar as well as providing motivation for the synchronic polysemy of pu. Constructions where pu introduces relative clauses are the earliest and most frequent, while its use as a complementizer slightly precedes that as a connective. The increasing ability of the child to process cognitively more demanding, in terms of meaning and form, pu constructions, is seen as the major determinant of ontogenetic change. The evidence supports synchronic treatments of pu as a polysemous marker with fuzzy boundaries among the different grammatical uses, which seem to cluster around the pragmatic meaning of presupposition. It also suggests that diachronic change in the case of pu may have been gradual as well as at least partly cognitively motivated, as predicted by grammaticalization rather than formal theories of grammar. Abstract The development of pu constructions in conversations between adults and a child aged 1;8 to 4;0 years is traced, with the aim of contributing to the description and explanation of the acquisition of grammar as well as provid ing motivation for the synchronic polysemy of pu. The evidence supports synchronic treatments of pu as a polysemous marker with fuzzy boundaries among the d ifferent grammatical uses, which seem to cluster around the pragmatic meaning of presupposition. It also suggests that d iachronic change in the case of pu may have been gradual as well as at least partly cognitively motivated , as predicted by grammaticalization rather than formal theories of grammar.
