I am pleased to present you with the 2016 Annual Report for the Ronald McDonald House of Delaware!

This year’s theme, “Partnering in Hope,” perfectly describes 2016 as the Ronald McDonald House celebrated its’ 25th anniversary of providing families a place of hope, support, and compassion during the most challenging of times of their lives. In partnership with our community, board members, volunteers, staff, and donors, the Ronald McDonald House has now served well over 44,000 families during its’ 25 year history. Our celebrations were many in 2016, and I thank each of you who contributed to them during the past year. Our annual report celebrates our accomplishments and impact on families, all made possible because of your support, friendship, and partnership.

I would especially like to thank our hospital partners, including Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children, Christiana Care, and Bayhealth. Very simply, our House would not exist without these extraordinary institutions, and the Ronald McDonald House has been proud to support the families whose loved ones are receiving world class care in these organizations every day.

As we celebrate our many accomplishments in 2016, the Ronald McDonald House of Delaware now sets its’ sights on the future, and we are excited about the opportunities to create even greater impact on the families and communities we serve. With your continued support, families will continue to find a place of healing, support, and compassion in our House, Family Rooms, and our dedicated staff and volunteers.

Thank you again for “Partnering in Hope.”

In 2016, we installed our Good News Board and Good News Bell. Families ring the bell when they want to celebrate a milestone with their Ronald McDonald House family—including other families staying at the House, volunteers, and staff.

Together, we come together to celebrate their exciting news. Families also have the opportunity to share their good news through our Good News Board, which is filled with colorful sticky notes. These notes announce the small victories, as well as the big ones!

DEAR fRIENDs,2016 was a memorable year for the Ronald McDonald House of Delaware. We were able to provide 15,938 overnight stays for families with seriously ill or injured children at the House as well as provide respite and a supportive environment for more than 11,000 families in our 3 Ronald McDonald Family Rooms located within the hospital setting. Families were able to find support from our volunteers, staff and other families, meals to nourish themselves and a warm comfortable bed to ensure a more restful night’s sleep. Without your support none of this work would have been possible!

We celebrated our 25th anniversary throughout 2016. Our House opened its doors on June 7, 1991 and our story is one of growth and change. We opened with only 17 guest rooms, and we now have 50 guest rooms and 3 overnight sleep rooms in our Family Room at Nemours. To celebrate our accomplishments, we held a reception in Sussex County on June 3 for our downstate friends, a community-wide birthday party at the Ronald McDonald House with 250 guests, and then our festivities culminated at our Red Shoe Affair on October 22 at the Hotel du Pont. An additional way that we commemorated our 25 years of serving families was the creation of the Walkway to Hope brick walkway. Now when families and visitors enter our House, there is a wonderful walkway with engravings of hope and love to greet them.

In order to prepare us for our future, a group of dedicated board of directors, volunteers, and staff worked diligently to create a new 5-year strategic plan. The new strategic plan enhances our mission and it provides the framework for us to continue to be successful. The plan will helps us to prioritize our work in 2017 and beyond.

Our priorities of providing superior services to guests, being a great place to volunteer and work, improving financial sustainability, and extending impact to the community will hopefully ensure that we are one of the top chapters in the RMHC global system and one of the strongest nonprofits in the State of Delaware.

As I reflect on 2016, I am most grateful for our local McDonald’s owner/operators, the Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Philadelphia Region, our 3 partner hospitals Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children, Christiana Care, and Bayhealth, our corporate and individual donors, the community groups that hold fund raisers on our behalf, the RMHC National Donors, and our dynamic volunteer team, and the “can do” staff: all as partners in hope serving families who need us during some of their darkest hours.

I am humbled by your generosity and support and thank you for all you do in helping us to keep families close.Warmest regards,

Among their heartaches, they think about the child they lost, who would have been ten this year, and their newborn baby, who has been in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit at Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for children since she was born in February.

Three-month old Sierra was born with a cardiac condition called a double outlet right ventricle with sub-aortic VSD, a heart defect due to a missing connection in the pulmonary artery and a hole between the lower chambers of the heart. At just three days old, Sierra underwent open heart surgery.

Hailing from Mifflinburg, Pennsylvania, about a 3-hour drive from Wilmington, Sierra’s parents Jerry and Lorraine didn’t know how they would be able to stay close when she was born with this condition. All they knew was that they needed to be close enough to visit Sierra every day.

The Hoovers discovered the Ronald McDonald House. Here, they found resources that helped to alleviate the stress of having a newborn in the hospital.

As members of the Mennonite religion, community is important to the Hoovers. Their favorite thing about staying at the House is being able to stay close to their family, even though they are over 150 miles away. On the weekends, their other children (ranging in age from 3-12 years) come to visit, and even get to spend time with their new baby sister Sierra in the hospital.

During the week, it’s common to see the Hoovers’ support system, their family and friends, bringing in large, home-cooked picnic lunches to

enjoy as a group. These meals, and the meals provided by the dozens of community group volunteers, are a vital part of the Hoovers’ stay at the House. Not only do these meals provide nourishment, but they are a chance to come together, and one less thing to worry about. “It would be stressful to have to come home and cook our own meals,” says Lorraine.

The Hoover family has found a new community: the other families who stay at the House. They have created strong bonds, friendships, and memories with the other parents and families who call the House a “home-away-from-home.” They also tell us that being able to talk to families in similar situations helps them “know they’re not alone.”

Despite the difficulties they have faced, the Hoovers bring a bright and positive energy to the Ronald McDonald House of Delaware. The family is hopeful about their upcoming plans, looking forward to beginning to bottle-feed Sierra, taking her home, and enjoying the summer in Mifflinburg with the entire family and their friends. ♥

The Hoover family is very familiar with joy, and with heartache.

We Care in Delaware Society

The We Care in Delaware Society is a group of committed donors who demonstrate belief in our mission. Through their consistent support, they enable the House to provide a “home-away-from-home” for families whose children are seeking specialized medical treatments at nearby hospitals.

This society is named in honor of the very first group of caring individuals who had a vision in 1986 to build a Ronald McDonald House in Delaware. Donors who have made a gift of at least $250 for five or more consecutive years are members of the We Care in Delaware Society. Our We Care in Delaware members are noted by an asterisk next to their names.

We congratulate you and thank you for your support.
