The first person buried in the Columbia cemetery (the old cemetery) was James Wilcox, about1828, who was a brother of Dr. Daniel Wilcox, the first husband of the late Mrs. J. J. Crittenden. The second person buried there was George McAfee, a brother of the late Rev. Rob't. L. McAfee.George McAfee in August, 1829, was killed near the present residence of Doctor John A.Vanlandingham, three miles west of town by a hurricane -- a tree falling upon him and his horse, killing both of them. Wilcox and McAfee were buried in the southeast portion of the cemeterynear a large sugar tree which stood till recently.
The first man who was hung for murder in Boone county, was Samuel Earls of Ralls County, about 1832, and the hanging took place in what is now a field and old brick yard north ofChristian College, and south of the nursery.
