Current topics

• Nanoelectronic devices and circuits, design and simulation.

The current trends in CMOS VLSI design involve techniques to optimize circuit performance for area, power

consumption and time delay, while sizes getting smaller every day. The research is focused on the design of

complex circuits, both sequential and combinational, using advanced transistor level architectures. New

encoders and memory circuits have been proposed and analysed at 32 nm regime, with results leading to

optimum performances for many of the parameters under test. The next steps include circuits at 22 nm using

advanced BSIM4 and beyond technologies, with emphasis given at the transistor level, with full custom design

capabilities and layouts using the latest developments and advances on the field. Initial results have been

published in IEEE journals and presented in conferences.

• Single electron technology, design and simulation.

Single-electronics, the technology that makes possible the control of transport and position of a single

electron, is one of the emerging nanoelectronic technologies. The construction of Single –Electron Circuits

(SECs), requires logic gates based on Single-Electron Devices (SEDs) such as Single-Electron Transistors

(SETs). More recently, hybrid structures have been proposed, making CMOS and SET technologies more

compatible. Current research includes single-electron gates and relevant hybrid SET-CMOS circuits, a study

made by simulation using suitable EDA tools and software.

• Quantum computing devices and quantum circuits.

Quantum computing has also been studied during the last years. At the first stages the research focused on the

study of recombination phenomena in semiconductors and potential applications in quantum computers. The

idea was examined both on a physics and a mathematics point of view. Research on this topic is at the primary

stages and further experience is required in order to establish a future research output. The present study on

the field is concentrated around the development of a Quantum Computer Simulator (QCS) called QuCirDET,

supporting Quantum Error-Correction (QEC) procedures and using a generalized QEC protocol independent

of hardware design variations. The use of this simulator is currently under examination and potential

applications include quantum cryptography and quantum circuitry as well as Quantum Cellular Automata

(QCA).

• As external collaborator/consultant: Technology of communications at nano-scale.

Using previous knowledge on nano-devices, consultancy is provided as an external collaborator to the group

led by Professor George Papadimitriou of AUTh (networks group). Current work involves the study of the

basic ideas around communications at nanoscale, regarding nano-device information exchange mechanisms.

This collaboration has so far produced an IEEE Journal article.

Past topics

• Semiconductor optoelectronic devices: Hybrid photovoltaics and photo-emission devices.

The properties of hybrid organic-inorganic photovoltaic devices, using metal oxides as charge injection and

transport layers were studied. Metal oxide films have been employed as hole and electron injection layers in

hybrid Inorganic-Organic Light Emitting Diodes (OLEDs) and Organic Photovoltaics (OPVs). In particular, ALD

(Atomic Layer Deposition) grown nanostructured WO3, and MoO3 films have been used to facilitate electron

and/or hole injection to the polymer Lowest Unoccupied Molecular Orbital (LUMO) and Highest Occupied

Molecular Orbital (HOMO) respectively, by reducing the injection barriers at the respective

polymer/electrode interfaces. This study has been producing results published in various journals and

conference proceedings. In parallel, research on the properties of metal oxide films of ZnO, took place, for use

in heterojunction devices with Si. In the past, research was conducted on the electrical properties of

photovoltaic and photo emission devices such as MBE grown GaAs photovoltaic devices and ZnS/Si hetero-

structures photoemission devices.

• Random Access Memories (RAMs): Design and study of new MOSFETs for new generation RAMs.

The study involved the design and evaluation of MOS transistors with high-k gate dielectrics as potential

candidates for DRAM memories. A study of their electrical properties using suitable modelling was made, while

the memory circuits were examined by suitable simulation. The memory circuits were mainly studied for their

performance, timing and power consumption. These parameters were examined in conjunction with the

properties of the MOS devices and an optimization procedure took place in order to further increase their

performance. Moreover, a method of implementing the use of new high-k materials on the design and

performance evaluation of sub-micron MOSFETs was developed while applications were concerned. The

devices were simulated using SPICE environments based on BSIM4 models. Studies involved potential

applications in embedded systems like low voltage RAMs.

• CMOS technology with high-k dielectrics gate devices.

This research effort was going on for various time periods. The research was concentrated around the study of

new generation MOS devices containing high-k dielectric thin films structures. These structures included

either a single material gate or a gate “stack” and the devices were grown either on Ge or Si substrates.

Characterisation techniques involved electrical and structural ones such as admittance spectroscopy (Y-w),

current-voltage (I-V), capacitance-conductance-voltage (C-G-V) measurements and reliability techniques (i.e.

constant voltage stress analysis). The gate stacks were developed by various combinations of materials,

included Rare Earth Oxides (REOs), and HfO2, while the single material gates were made by films BaTiO3,

SrTiO3, SiON and nanostructured CeO2. The main method used to deposit these films was sputtering, while

SiON was produced by CVD and gate stacks by Molecular Beam deposition (MBD). The device properties

under test included the charge storage capacity, the trapped charges, the oxide breakdown and the

degradation effects due to leakage currents and metallization defects. The potential use of such films at Metal-

Insulator-Metal (MIM) capacitors was also examined.

• Diamond & diamond-like carbon based microelectronics.

The potential application of thin carbon films in microelectronic devices was the main and central part of the

research work for a long period of time. Starting with the PhD research, and continued for about 10 years

after that, the research effort on the issue involved the growth and characterization of thin carbon films on

silicon substrates. The main aim was the construction of effective heterojunction electronic devices that will

take advantage of important properties of the carbon films, namely their electrical conductivity, thermal

behaviour and mechanical hardness. During the PhD research, a-C:H films were developed and examined by

electrical and structural techniques in order to derive their properties. Later and until recently, sputtered

non-hydrogenated films have been studied for their electrical properties with various electrical measurement

techniques including noise spectroscopy. Examination of the possible construction of effective heterojunction

devices made of sputtered amorphous carbon nitride (CNx) films on silicon was also part of a major program

financed by the Greek Secretariat of Research & Technology via EU funds.

• Optical sensors and applications.

The research on this issue involved the study of an infrared sensor based system for target localization in

automation and robotics. The architecture of an indoor target localization system employing low cost infrared

emitting diodes and sensors was examined. This research was performed in the Department of Computer

Engineering & Informatics of the University of Patras, under the supervision of Professor G.Ph. Alexiou and Dr.

Nikos Petrelis, for the years 2005-2009. During this research, both experimental and analytical techniques

were used to derive proper modeling of the pattern recognition success rate, in order to estimate distances of

several meters with an adjustable estimation error. Important part of this research was the evaluation of the

system with respect to the properties of the diodes and the circuitry used for the IR detectors. The system can

be used in several virtual reality and robotics applications. Various publications were produced from this

research, involving three journal papers.

• New technologies in education practice.

In the past, the application of commercial available software to the education practice, with emphasis given on

Distance Learning applications was examined involving potential applications of circuit simulation programs

on the development of distance learning laboratory exercises. This effort led to the publications of articles in

relevant conferences.
