A couple from a jungle in Africa arrived in King-ston Ontario and were given a fully equipped home to live in They were handed the keys but no one thought of explaining about the electrical appliances Dur-ing the month of July they went to bed when it got dark and rose with the sun They collected wood and were able to cook in the fireplace They found water came from the taps and they did their washing in the kitchen and dried their clothes on the line But by November they were cold miserable and very frightened Happily some friends came to visit found the house in darkness and they flicked on the lights They showed the couple how they could set the thermostat to heat the house and use the electric stove for cooking The next week they learned about the washer and dryer the vacuum cleaner how to answer the tel-ephone and dial their friends The television helped them find out about Canada and how peo-ple survived the Canadian winter That story illustrates the huge change that took place on the Day of Pentecost ldquoSuddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a mighty wind and it filled the entire houserdquo (Acts 22) The couple from Africa discovered that they were living in a house in which they were free to enjoy light and heat and the many appliances needed for the Canadian winter (continued)

But the Pharisees and other religious leaders of the day had never told people all that God had for them On the Day of Pentecost the early Christians began to experience the light and power available to them by the power of the Holy Spirit In 1968 at the Ecumenical Council of Churches Meeting at Uppsala Metropolitan Ignatios of Latakia spoke these words ldquoWithout the Holy Spirit God is far away Christ stays in the past the gospel is a dead letter the church is simply an organization authori-ty a matter of domination mission a matter of propaganda the lit-urgy no more than an evocation Christian living a slave morality But in the Holy Spirit The cosmos is resurrected and groans with the birth pangs of the kingdom the risen Christ is there the gospel is the power of life the Church shows forth life of the Trinity authority is a liberating service mission is a Pentecost the liturgy is both me-morial and anticipation human action is deifiedrdquo We will celebrate the Season of Pentecost from May 24th to August 30th this year Come and see what wonderful things God will do in us through us and for Godrsquos great world Donrsquot forget worship this sum-mer Pastor Bob

A Prayer for the Blessings of Summertime by James Vanden Bosch
ldquoGod of creation God of the seasons bless your creatures with seasons
of delight Lord of the Sabbath you have established the rhythms of
life establish in us also the rhythms for human prospering grant us
the good sense to enjoy Sabbath rest in this season Grant us moreo-
ver wisdom to know that there is a time to play a time to cease from
our labors a time to sense majesty in a blue sky richness in green
grass love in faithful friends and joy in our being Grant us then blue
skies this summer and green grass grant us faithful friends and the
time strength and spirit for play Grant us the wit to know the good-
ness of this creation which blind defiant or ungrateful we despoil
Send our roots rain our hearts ease so that we may show in our lives
that we can live rightly in this season of our lives and see it as if for the
first time in wonder in awe and in a spirit of thanksgivingrdquo
Amen

Amen
