I blew kisses into it until it was all full.” The father was crushed. He fell on his knees and put his arms around his precious little girl. He begged her to forgive him for his unnecessary anger. A Christmas StoryThe Gold Wrapping Paper Once upon a time, there was a man who worked very hard just to keep food on the table for his family. This particular year a few days before Christmas, he punished his little five-year-old daughter after learning that she had used up the family’s only roll of expensive gold wrapping paper.

As money was tight, he became even more upset when on Christmas Eve he saw that the child had used all of the expensive gold paper to decorate one shoebox she had put under the Christmas tree. He also was concerned about where she had gotten money to buy what was in the shoebox.

Nevertheless, the next morning the little girl, filled with excitement, brought the gift box to her father and said, “This is for you, Daddy!”

As he opened the box, the father was embarrassed by his earlier overreaction, now regretting how he had punished her.

But when he opened the shoebox, he found it was empty and again his anger flared. “Don’t you know, young lady,” he said harshly, “when you give someone a present, there’s supposed to be something inside the package!”

The little girl looked up at him with sad tears rolling from her eyes and whispered: “Daddy,

it’s not empty. I blew kisses into it until it was all full.”

The father was crushed. He fell on his knees and put his

arms around his precious little girl. He begged her to forgive him for his unnecessary anger.

An accident took the life of the child only a

short time later. It is told that the father kept this

little gold box by his bed for all the years of his life.

Whenever he was discouraged or faced difficult problems, he would

open the box, take out an imaginary kiss, and remember the love of this beautiful child who had put it there.

In a very real sense, each of us has been given an invisible golden box filled with unconditional love and kisses from our children, family, friends and God. There is no more precious possession anyone could hold.

Premier Redford spoke eloquently about children and families and their important place in our communities. Premier Redford acknowledged Kids Kottage’s good work in the areas of Early Intervention and FASD.

A generous audience made the Premier’s Breakfast in 2013 the best one ever, raising over $50,000! This money will provide care and refuge for infants and children during times when their home life is chaotic and upside down. It will provide the voice of reason and calm to help children’s parents return their homes to the safe, nurturing places they want and need them to be for their children. With this money Kids Kottage will continue to help provide the tools and strategies that families need to gain and keep food security for their children. Parenting

programs will provide parents education about their child’s early development and help them increase their skills so they can guide their children toward competency and success.

Many thanks to all who attended and participated!

Karen Clipperton of Nev’r Dun Acres prepares the dinner auction item purchased at the Premier’s Breakfast.

“The Great Gatsby” GalaIt all happened June 14th. Guests of the Kids Kottage “Great Gatsby” Gala, sponsored by WAM DEVELOPMENT GROUP, stepped back to 1922 in the fictitious town of West Egg, Long Island.

Two hundred guests sat down to a fabulous meal at tables covered with glittering gold rosette-covered tablecloths, with centerpieces of

spectacular fresh flowers, and chairs bedecked with faux feathers.

And when the time was right, Danny Hooper called generous hearts together to bid on auction items donated by Arpi’s North, Spruceland Millworks, and Anna Loparco and Gary Smith.

And when “all was done and all were in”, the

Gatsby Gala raised an impressive amount of money to keep children safe and families together.

Never can an evening like the “Gatsby” Gala come together without many big hearts and working hands. Thank you to all of the supporting sponsors. Together we are making a positive difference!

Kids Kottage Golf Classic 2013

The Golf Classic at the Edmonton Golf and Country Club was a resounding success!

Rod Philips, Al Hamilton, Rob Brown, Dave Lumley, Ian Herbers, John Farlinger, Tom Richards, Dan Kepley, Larry Wruck, Gary Lefebvre, Glenn Harper, Todd Storme and Bob Stauffer all lent their celebrity status to make the Kids Kottage Classic the best that it could be.

The biggest winners, of course, were the children and families we serve at Kids Kottage, followed by the first place team of Jordan Adams, Dave Locke, James Malkin and Kelly Pawlik from Oxford Properties Group.

Mark Carnduff, Lowell MacDougall, James Porter and Patrick Rokosh made up the ‘Most Honest Team on the course.

All who enjoyed the tasty banquet were treated to the fireside chat of Craig MacTavish and Bob Stauffer. The live auction was exciting and entertaining and, along with an excellent silent auction, rounded out a great day of golf and charity.

By their participation in the Kids Kottage Classic on Monday, August 26th, golfers made sure children in our community are held in high regard and they believe their childrens’ well-being is important.

For the Love of WineKids Kottage’s, ‘Love of Wine’ event was a romantic evening at Delta Edmonton South Hotel. Guests, along with their ‘Valentines’ and friends, sampled wines from all over the world and ordered their favourites. Tasty food pairings including a chocolate buffet and the exceptional

jazz music by the one and only Juno nominated, Sandro Dominelli, and other local artists completed the ambiance of a beautiful evening. Opportunities abounded to purchase from silent auction spa packages, travel vouchers, wine dinners and other items of leisure.

We extend heart felt thanks to those generous guests that purchased our auction items. Thanks also to our many sponsors. Your generosity helped make our 2013 Love of Wine Event a truly successful one enjoyed by all.

Employees of Supreme Steel Group (Supreme Steel, Midwest Constructors, Quality Fabricating & Supply, Supreme Steel Bridge Division and Pro-V Manufacturing) participated in their annual golf tournament to raise money for Kids Kottage. Supreme Steel matched the amount raised by employees and delivered the proceeds – over $7500!

More than 1,600 employees of Western Financial Group’s network of insurance brokerages each built a teddy bear at their employee conventions. Kids Kottage received 45 bears, a wonderful addition to our bear pit. Said Jeff Burke, president and CEO “We hope these teddy bears will make a difference in the lives of children who are overcoming a trauma, experiencing a life change, or who just need to be cheered up.”

The Starlite 4-H Multi-Club came together again this spring to provide beautiful plant pots to adorn the front of the Kottage. This project could not be so beautiful without the help of Wallish Greenhouses or the UFA.

Ladies from the Edmonton Institution for Women submit their artwork for a calendar to Volunteer Dan Gurnick who makes up the calendars and sells them to family, friends and churches. Proceeds from the calendars are shared between Kids Kottage and another charity.

Sturgeon Valley Baptist Church Girls Club blessed Kids Kottage by making and selling pumpkin table centre pieces. They raised over $300.00. Special thanks to these industrious girls who wanted to help children less fortunate.

All Weather Windows installing the two windows they donated. It doesn’t get any better than that. These new windows were in place for ATCO I-Tek to do their bedroom renos.

Not once, not twice but…THREE times Group 2051 RCACC 19th Alberta Dragoon Cadets volunteered to bake cookies and muffins, sort donations, and cleaned the garage.

The aim of “Because Edmonton Cares” is “To partner caring individuals with opportunities to give back in the community without it being a huge time commitment or effort to participate. It gives people a chance to volunteer in a group setting, to get exposed to a large variety of non-profit organizations in Edmonton, and to commit only when it fits into their schedule.” Thanks to the group who came and baked cookies and muffins for the children at Kids Kottage. You helped to make our day!

A group of 12 Grade 8 students from Grace Point Youth Group did a major cleaning of ALL the toys in our playroom and baked two different kinds of cookies as well. A job well done. Thanks.

ATCO I –TEK used a small amount of the money they raised during their EPIC program to completely renovate two of the children’s bedrooms in the Kottage. They purchased a new crib and crib sheets and new bed linens for the single beds. The rooms boast bright new paint, a new glider rockers, and throw carpets.

A team building exercise at ATCO I-TEK means beautiful furniture for Kids Kottage.

Kids Kottage Celebrates Our Volunteers! The Face-Lift ContinuesKids Kottage is so grateful to 945 Developments for their generous donation of complete renovations in the laundry room and the playroom. Staff work more efficiently in the busiest room in the Kottage, the laundry room. The cabinets and sink are new. Who does not appreciate working in an attractive room like this one has become with its new paint and lino, cabinets, sink and beautiful window covering?

The children are definitely the winners in our brand new playroom! It boasts new cabinetry, new lino, beautiful bright paint and pretty window coverings.

Everyone will feel like winners next summer because 945 Developments have

installed air conditioning!

A plaque was presented to 945 Developments at the Kottage. The plaque has a place of honour in the playroom.

During the time we spent together at the Kottage celebrating the

wonderful work that has been completed we talked about the successes and the needs of the Kottage. We all agreed that having a crisis nursery in Edmonton

to ensure help is available to families 24 hours per day is of

paramount importance.

Thanks so much to Cameron and Sue Quilliam, Bob Cramers and Pam Proud, Carol Quilliam, Tony Zicarelli, Dino Vlahadamis, and Sergio Felix for joining us to celebrate this project.
