ANDERSONVILLE
Andersonville National Historic SiteThree words – courage, hardship and sacrifice – portray the thousands of American prisoners of war dating from the Revolutionary War up to the pres-ent conflicts. The Andersonville Na-tional Historic Site preserves the site of Camp Sumter (Andersonville Confed-erate prison) where over 45,000 Union soldiers were confined during the Civil War and it also manages the Anderson-ville National Cemetery and the Na-tional Prisoner of War Museum, which opened in 1998 to honor all U.S.
The Andersonville National His-toric Site is located at 496 Cemetery Road in Andersonville, Ga., about 40 miles ESE of Columbus. The park and National Cemetery is open dai-ly from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Nation-al Prisoner of War Museum is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Admission is free. Today's highly competitive job market presents challenges for everyone seek-ing employment. Recent graduates and seasoned professionals alike encounter limited opportunities. After submitting a resume and cover letter, these job seekers sometimes do not get a reply from prospective employers. This is discouraging, but not a surprise when employers often receive hundreds of resumes for every job posted.
The tight job market can be espe-cially hard on job seekers with 15 or more years of work experience. As they look through posted jobs, they often find entry-level openings that require less education or experience than they have accumulated. Sheryl Decker, di-rector of Career Services, offers steps that can help overqualified job seekers find employment.
"An overqualified job candidate is someone who has too much education or experience, or can be too highly-paid for the position sought," Decker says. "When employers review a re-sume, they first tend to weigh the level of education and a candidate's past experience against the job opportunity. If the candidate possesses qualifica-tions that are higher than the position requires, a manager may set the resume aside."
An overqualified applicant can raise a red flag for a number of reasons. Employers generally attach a negative connotation to overqualified candidates
because they feel the candidate:
■ May leave as soon as he or she finds a job commensurate with the higher qualifications.
■ May continue looking for employ- ment with a higher salary.
■ Has never been promoted by previ-ous employers.
■ Has not explained why he or she seeks a lower level position.
"The employer's top priority is to make the right hiring decision. It costs money to hire and train a new employ-ee, and it is beneficial to the organi-zation when the employee comes on board for the long haul," Decker says. "It can be scary for an overqualified person who isn't finding job openings that match their credentials." How can you overcome this negative perception?
Change the format of your resume"If you have a lot of skills, it can be helpful to organize your resume into a functional resume format," Decker says. "Rather than presenting informa-tion in chronological order under each position held, highlight your skills and accomplishments as they pertain to the position you are seeking." You can in-clude the companies you have worked for in the past without emphasizing

PINE MOUNTAIN
F.D. Roosevelt State ParkAt 9,049 acres, Georgia’s largest state park is a hiker’s and back-packer’s haven. More than 40 miles of trails, including the pop-ular 23-mile Pine Mountain Trail, wind through hardwood and pines, over creeks and past small waterfalls. Many visitors are sur-prised to find rolling mountains 80 miles southeast of Atlanta. Sev-eral park amenities were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Great Depression, in-cluding cottages and the Liberty Bell Swimming Pool fed by cool springs. A wooded campground sits near the edge of a small fish-ing lake, and privately operated stables offer guided horseback rides. In 1921, President Frank-lin D. Roosevelt came to this part of Georgia to swim in naturally warm springs that offered relief from polio. Today, nearby Roo-sevelt’s Little White House His-toric Site invites visitors to see his modest home, a museum and the pools that first drew him here.
The F.D. Roosevelt State Park is located at 2970 Hwy. 190 between Pine Mountain and Warm Springs. Park hours are 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. For more information, call 706-663-4858 or visit www.gastateparks.org/fdroosevelt

In the way of tax legislation, 2011 was a relatively quiet

changes that will affect this year's tax returns.
"The changes enacted at the end of 2010 will still

says TaxACT spokesperson, Jessi Dolmage. "With the
debate over the federal budget and taxes unlikely to end
any time soon, who knows if the soon-to-be expired tax

Job Seekers
titles that may raise concerns.
Customize resume to each specific position
"Tailor each resume to include the attributes the prospective employer seeks," says Decker.
"Highlight the things that show you are qualified, not overquali-fied." Be sure to include charac-teristics of your personality that show you are motivated, a team player and dedicated to perform-ing the job effectively. Along with a positive attitude, these soft skills can help define you as an asset.
Call on your professional network Never underestimate the importance of joining a professional association. "People who know you can vouch for
your experience and value to the company, even though your qualifications may be higher," Decker says. "This is one of the best ways to overcome negative perceptions."
Honesty is the best policy "Prospective employers call your references, check your back-ground and criminal history, and speak with the company where you last worked. Be honest about the reasons you left, and make it known that you are flexible about salary in a new position," Decker says. "Today's economy makes this a reality."
Above all, focus on how your learned skills can benefit the company. Employers want to provide good service to custom-ers in a positive atmosphere for employees.

New Piedmont Newnan opens TuesdayPiedmont Newnan Hospital
officially opens Tuesday at its new campus at 745 Poplar Road.
But before that can happen the aging facility on Hospital Road must be officially closed.
It’s not a process that hap-pens with the flip of a switch or wave of a magic wand. Moving from the old facility to the new is actually a balanc-ing act that requires keeping both facilities open for more than a week as people, equip-ment and procedures under-go a transition that allows no room for error.
It’s not a process anyone takes lightly. But, so far, the procedure is going smoothly
and remarks from hospital officials make it clear they are ready to officially celebrate the opening of Georgia’s new-est hospital on Tuesday at 745 Poplar Road beside Interstate 85.
“We’ve waited a long time to be able to welcome patients to their new community hos-pital,” said Tim Stack, presi-dent and CEO of Piedmont
Healthcare. “We’re proud of the new facility and the expanded services we offer residents of Coweta County a n d t h e surround-ing areas. The open-i n g o f t h e n e w Piedmont Newnan Hospital is para-mount to our vision of provid-ing comprehensive, quality health care services across the Piedmont Healthcare system.”
The final days of joint oper-ation between the two facili-ties are scheduled down to the minute to make sure that essential services offered at Hospital Road remain in place until those services are

oftentimes, buying a home opens up a bottomless pit of opportuni-ties for projects and improve-ments. While some homeowners engage in different repairs and fix-ups out of necessity, many others like to freshen-up their spaces out of personal preference instead of need. But even the most well-intentioned projects can be waylaid if budgets are tight.
What many homeowners may not realize is that there are many ways to make updates and changes to a home that do not require a major overhaul or a large price tag. the following are seven projects that won't break the bank.
1. Move around furniture. You may be able to change the look of a room without spending any money. interior designers know how to arrange furniture for maximum appeal, but the av-erage homeowner can do it, too. Find a focal point in the room and angle the furniture toward it. Don't make the focal point the television, however. try changing the placement of chairs and sofas. Simply moving a curio cabinet from one corner to another may also make a difference.
2. Add lighting. Lighting at different levels in the room can create a vibrant impact. Many homeowners mistakenly put in a couple of table lamps and think that will be adequate. However, properly illuminating a room means varying the lighting to cre-ate different moods at different times. Plus, more light can make a room feel more welcoming.
3. Add new pillows or drapes. Changing a few aspects of a room can give it an entirely new look. if you want to add a splash of color but don't know what to do, think about incorpo-rating some new throw pillows or change the curtains. An accesso-ry here and there in a bright color also can incorporate a new hue without it being overwhelming.
4. Change knobs or small accents. Give a room a new look by focusing on the small de-
tails. Switch out cabinet knobs for something updated and modern. take inventory of wall outlets and light switches and think about se-lecting new ones that coordinate with your home decor.
5. Use plants. empty corners or spots you're not certain how to fill may benefit from a plant. Plants are inexpensive ways to add instant color and visual ap-peal to a room. Plus, having live plants can help improve indoor air by filtering out contaminants. A home with plants also feels more cozy.
6. Hang new wall art. it may be time to look at your photos and artwork and make a few adjustments. Finding new prints to hang could instantly change a room's ambience. And you needn't spend a lot of money on professional photography, either. Grab your camera and take a few close-up shots of flowers or take in a landscape scenery. Many of today's home printers can pro-duce professional-quality prints in minutes.
7. Try a new coat of paint. After you've exhausted other av-enues, choosing a new paint color may be the new look you desire. Painting is one of the least expen-sive yet most dramatic methods of changing a home's interior. With dozens of hues to choose from, and new apps that enable
you to take snapshots of things in nature or in your life and match them up to a paint color, you will have scores of opportunities to explore fresh new colors for your home.
When you get inspired to make improvements to the home but fear how much it may take out of your wallet, consider inexpen-sive tricks that can induce a big "wow" factor.
Seven Inexpensive Ways to Update a Home Now
Home and Garden Connection

one of the best things about warm-weather months is the ample opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors; but there’s no need to travel to get your fix of fresh air. the best place to relax, play and enjoy the season could be right outside your window.
“Your yard is an extension of your home, so make it a place where you want to spend time,” says John Furner, an outdoor Living specialist for a major retailer. “Sprucing up your yard — for entertaining, cooking or simple tranquility — is every bit as important as those kitchen upgrades.”
Here are some great ideas for an outdoor space makeover:
The GardenGive the phrase “locally-grown produce” new meaning with a backyard garden of your own. Whether you plant a full array of vegetables or you only have time to care for a few herb pots, a garden gives those simple sum-mer salads a tasty, healthy and easily-accessible boost.
if you are new to growing plants, flowers, or even fruits, do not fret. Gardening departments at local retailers can guide you with set-up, tools, soil and starter plants at a great value. Go online to research gardening tips and nourish your green thumb.
The GrillWhile barbecuing makes any meal a celebration, there’s no need to wait until a special holiday to cook outdoors. Make fresh-grilled vegetables and meats a regular part of your summer menus and recipes. if this is your first time buying a grill or you seek a specialized grill, consider your taste prefer-
ence (smoky versus crisp and clean), the quantities of food you regularly plan to grill and optimal backyard location.
if you prefer a smoky taste, then consider opting for a char-coal grill, and choose a gas or propane grill if you want to main-tain the original flavors of the food. if you plan to use your grill for large parties and entertaining — and have a large patio or open-air space — you should look at larger covered grills which tend
to be the most versatile products.
The Patioinvest in comfortable patio furni-ture that is water-resistant and rust-proof. Whether you choose teak, aluminum, wicker or wrought iron, browsing options online can help you find a durable set of furniture and décor that is the right style for your yard.
For cooler evenings, consider installing a fire pit in your backyard to make entertaining al fresco a year-round option. A fire
pit doesn’t need to take up a lot of space, and there are numer-ous styles available to match any decorating taste.
How To Make The Most Of Your Home’s Outdoor Spaces
Whether it’s a few simple upgrades or a complete backyard makeover, you can make your outdoor space the place to be all season.
Throw pillows are accessories that can easily and inexpensively change the look of a space.

TAKING LEAVEThose faced with pressing
problems at home are entitled to up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave per year under the Family Medi-cal Leave Act (FMLA) to tend to certain family-care needs. To qualify, an employee must have worked at a company with 50 or more employees for at least a year and logged 1,250 hours dur-ing that time. Regarding pre-cipitating circumstances, the FMLA applies if an employee or his or her parent or child devel-ops a serious illness, sustains a major injury, or requires ong-ing medical treament. Births, adoptions, and the deployment/recuperation of a military fam-ily member can also prompt leaves. The law also guarantees that an employee’s position will be restored when the employee returns.
HINT: According to the povi-sions of the Family Medical Leave Act, employees on leave should also continue to have health coverage, but vacation or retirement benefits may not continue to accrue.

When it comes to losing weight and getting in shape, Jamie Walker, co-founder and president of a online health community website, knows a thing or two. A yoga Alliance certified instruc-tor and boot camp leader, Walker is also the winner of multiple marathons. “losing weight and getting in shape is more than just count-ing calories and squat repeti-tions,” says Walker. “it’s about implementing healthy habits and actions into your daily life.”
1. Trim Your Plate. When preparing meals, consider proper portion sizes for veg-etables, lean proteins, grains and dairy. using a smaller salad plate will help you keep portions in control, while also providing the visual cue that you have eaten enough food to feel satisfied. to learn more about portions, visit www.ChooseMyPlate.gov.
2. Grab Your Toes, Not a Fork. “When you’re feeling tired or stressed out your first instinct may be to grab a snack. But before snacking, consider stretch-ing,” suggests Walker. stretching can help you feel rejuvenated, provide you with longer lasting energy, as well as help clear your mind.
3. When Dining Out, Go Dutch. When you’re out on the town try splitting a meal with a friend. Most restaurants serve por-tions that far exceed our dietary requirements for a single meal. sharing food minimizes the chance you’ll overeat.
4. Wake and Weigh.“set a goal to step on the scale at the same time each week,” says Walker. “sticking to a routine will help keep you accountable,
making it easier to track your progress.”
5. Drink More Water.thirst is often mistaken for hun-ger. According to the Mayo Clinic, men should drink roughly 3 liters of water each day (13 cups) and women should drink 2.2 liters (9 cups). Create the habit of drinking a glass of water before each meal to avoid over-eating.
6. Go Green.Make a sincere effort to add something green to all of your meals. Dark, leafy greens are full of fiber, which is proven to help you feel fuller longer. Greens such as spinach and kale are also packed with important vitamins, minerals and disease-fighting phytochemicals.
7. Don’t Call it a Workout, Call it Fun.instead of associating your work-out with “work,” channel your positive energy and make your exercise time pleasurable. Walker recommends working out to your favorite tunes and trying fun,
non-conventional ways to burn calories like dancing, jumping rope or doing squats while brush-ing your teeth in the morning.
8. Slip into Something Less Comfortable.Ditch the sweatpants and opt for something that makes you feel amazing. studies show that you’re less likely to overeat if you feel confident.
9. Don’t Subtract, Just Add.instead of focusing on foods you have to subtract from your diet, focus on the foods that can
always be added, like fiber-rich fruits and vegetables. try new combinations of wholesome foods. you may be surprised by how much you enjoy flavorful, seasonal produce in some of your favorite dishes, such as vegetar-ian lasagna.
10. Early to Bed, Early to Rise.According to the National sleep Foundation, short sleep duration is linked with an increase in body mass index due to an increased appetite caused by sleep deprivation.
