MYANMAR ECONOMIC OUTLOOK

MYANCONCRETE 2018 – Myanmar’s International Concrete & Cement Products Exhibition is returning to MEP Mindama, Yangon, from 29 November - 1 December

2018, with a blast. Loaded with opportunities, this Expo is a pivotal business-to-business platform, that brings together key decision-makers and buyers of the industry including architects, engineers, contractors, quantity

surveyors, importers, distributors, dealers and regulatory bodies.

Myanmar’s first cement plant was set up in 1935, capable of producing 200 tonnes per day. As times and seasons have altered the façade of Myanmar, where the country has emerged from decades of international isolation, Myanmar’s building and construction industry has rapidly evolved too. Today the industry anticipates numerous major infrastructure projects, evident in the Thilawa Special Economic Zone (SEZ), Yangon that is progressing significantly.

Rich in limestone deposits & lengthy waterways networks, Myanmar construction industry is growing more sophisticated, with the addition of the construction of high-rise buildings, roadways and bridges in its arena. All this translates into a robust and growing economy for Myanmar that projects exponential growth in all areas of the building and construction industry, including a wealth of business opportunities for the concrete industry.

As hundreds of international brands from various countries such as China, Italy, Malaysia and Singapore are expected to be at MYANCONCRETE 2018, you can be sure to meet your aims, be it building up your business, to consolidate business partnerships or simply to wanting to know more about the up and coming trends in the market. This Expo is co-located with MYANBUILD 2018 – Myanmar’s No.1 International Building & Construction Industry Exhibition & Conference.

Japan recently opened a heavy concrete factory, IHI Corporation in Myanmar. It is the first Japanese plant producing pre-stressed concrete products in Myanmar. The Tokyo-based heavy industry company in partnership with Myanmar’s Construction Ministry, opened the $12.1 million facility in the

Myaungdagar Steel Industrial Zone in Hmawbi, 50km northwest of Yangon.

Similar to Japan, Myanmar lies in a region prone to earthquakes. Therefore, there is a great demand for pre-stressed concrete products, vital to new infrastructure projects such as bridges, roads and buildings, crucial for Myanmar’s future development. With the transfer of Japan’s advanced

technology, Myanmar’s construction industry is projected to be boosted tremendously.

The growth of Myanmar’s construction industry is supported by the country’s improving economic conditions, and government investments in residential, energy and utilities, and public infrastructure projects, as well as a rise in foreign investments. The industry is anticipated to value at

US$13.5 billion, in 2020.

Myanmar’s cement market has relied on imports for decades, but there is a significant shift to domestically-produced products over the past few years. As many construction projects have started popping up in the country, the demand for cement is promising. Starting with only 3-4 cement factories before 1988, there are now about 15 or more factories in Myanmar, most with the capacity to produce 1,000 tonnes a day.

In order to accelerate the flow of foreign direct investments (FDI), the government introduced a new investment law, that eases restrictions on both domestic and foreign investments, that results in opening up of economic sectors to private investments, effective April 2017. It is expected to drive more FDI into construction projects for the coming years.
