My Viking project By Orla Kelly Slide 2 Where did the Vikings come from? The Vikings came from Norway, Sweden and Denmark, it was known as Scandinavia. They then travelled to France Ireland and England. Slide 3 What were their settlement Patterns ? The Vikings settled close to the sea so they could reach their boats. They chose flat ground so their cattle could graze and so that they could grow their crops. Most people lived on farms. The Vikings lived in long rectangular houses made with upright timbers, wattle and daub or stone. They were usually one room with a cooking fire in the middle. The smoke escaped through a hole in the roof. Animals and people lived in the same building. The animals lived in a byre at one end of the house and the people lived at the other. Vikings also built Smithys, which were places for them to make and mend iron tools and utensils. Food was stored in wooden barrels and boxes. The Vikings also used wood for plates and spoons. They used knots to build the boats instead of nails. They used the ships to sail across rivers and the sea. They used their ships to go and rob their enemies. Slide 6 Womens clothes Women wore a long linen dress with a long woollen tunic which looked like an apron and they wore thick woolly socks and leather shoes. Slide 7 Mens clothes Viking men wore a long woollen shirt with long cloth trousers held up by a sash. On their feet they wore woollen socks with soft leather shoes or long boots. In battle he would wear an iron helmet and a mail- chain to protect himself Slide 8 The battle of clontarf The battle of clontarf took place in April 1014. Brian Boru assembled a large army and headed to the Viking stronghold at Dublin. The Vikings were expecting them and, with support from allies in Scotland, headed to sea in their longboats, preparing to launch a surprise attack on the Irish before they reached Dublin. They came ashore at Clontarf where a big battle started. In the evening the Vikings began to weaken. They turned and fled to their ships and many were drowned trying to reach their ships. Many were killed before they reached the sea. Slide 9 Jewellery If you wore good jewellery it was considered that you were wealthy and had a good social status. The Vikings wore jewellery with simple patterns and designs. The Vikings swapped their jewellery for other jewellery this was called barter.
