Educational technology in a nutshell

Educational Technology the effective use of technological tools in

learning. it concerns an array of tools, such as

media, machines and networking hardware, as well as considering underlying theoretical perspectives for their effective application.

As an academic discipline, the study of educational technology prepares individuals by helping them acquire a deeper understanding and mastery of:

learning resources: messages, people, materials, devices, techniques and settings;

processes for analyzing and devising solutions to those problems through research, theory, design, production, evaluation, utilization;

the processes involved in organization and personnel management.

The focus is on effective processes to facilitate learning using technologies and understanding the impacts of technology on learners and organizations.

Instructional Design: In order to bring desired changes in the pupils’ behavior, the teaching situations, working tools and new approaches were considered important in addition to the learning principles. The composite form of all these is instructional design.

Page 10: MY portfolio in Edtech

In order to define educational technology we may ask ourselves what constitutes an instructional design and what disciplines look at these constituents.

Page 11: MY portfolio in Edtech

Even from a pure "engineering perspective," it doesn't make much sense to talk about Educational Technology just in terms of Instructional design models or instructional design methods.

An instructional designer also feels concerned by more fundamental disciplines like general learning theory or pedagogical theory. These theories provide interesting insights on issues like the relation between learning type or learning level and appropriate pedagogic strategy, how affect and motivation may influence the learning process, what multimedia design can learn from theories on human information processing or cognitive load, why metacognition and collaborative learning is important etc.

Owen (2008) identifies three key pedagogical facts that "organise" the ICT-enhanced pedagogical landscape.

Computer as a handy tool for teachers

Computers act as an informative tool in which it provides vast source of information in various forms like texts, graphics, sound, and video. The internet itself also helps as it serves as a channel for global communication.

Aside from the computer's capability of being an informative tool, it also serves as a constructive tool. That is, the computer itself, can be used for manipulating information, visualizing one's understanding, and building new knowledge.

Computer is also a co-constructive tool. Students use co-constructive tools to work cooperatively and construct a shared understanding of new knowledge.

Lastly, computer acts as a situating tool wherein a school-to-school or classroom-to-classroom environment is possible and students could talk to other learners and share something they have learned.

The hardware is useless when there is no software. Software is important for the reason that through it, many things can be done. The software can be applications or system software. The system software is the operating system bundle inside the computer while application system commands a certain task or need.

ICT as tools for education  3 Main advantages of ICT tools for

education Through ICT, images can easily be used in

teaching and improving the retentive memory of students.

Through ICT, teachers can easily explain complex instructions and ensure students' comprehension.

Through ICT, teachers are able to create interactive classes and make the lessons more enjoyable, which could improve student attendance and concentration.

3 Main disadvantages of ICT tools for education

Setting up the devices can be very troublesome.

Too expensive to afford Hard for teachers to use with a lack of

experience using ICT tools

ADDIE MODEL

The ADDIE instructional design model is the most common instrument use by the instructional designers. It is a model that teach step-by step the whole process of any training program, it is use in the framework to create new ideas.

Five Domains of Educational Technology (Association for Educational Communications and Technology, 1994)

To increase the potential for success during the instructional creation or instructional improvement process, it is important that one is knowledgeable of these five domains.

Design – the planning phase of educational technology. Design interprets really in terms of learner performance and negotiated expectations of the learner. It describes natural or existing interrelationships that constitute a content area.

Development –Instructional development is the process of producing learning materials from a detailed plan (design)Instructional development (also known as instructional product development) is the process of finalizing procedures and testing materials intended to support instructional episodes.

Learning through Edtech 1 and Edtech 2

After studying Educational technology 1 and Educational technology , I learned that educational technology is a big help for us, future educator, to know the different uses of technology in education. Learners nowadays are called 21st century learners because technology is integrated in the teaching and learning process.

Page 24: MY portfolio in Edtech

Learning through Edtech 1 and Edtech 2

Technology is not only a tool, but also a guide for teachers in teaching their learners. 21st century learners are learners who integrate technology in their learning process, so we teachers must know the advantages and disadvantages of using technology in the teaching process.

Page 25: MY portfolio in Edtech

Learning through Edtech 1 and Edtech 2

We must always remember that technology is only a tool. It will never replace a teacher or an educator. Technology is only a tool that a teacher must use to teach his/her students but don’t always rely on technology. You must manipulate technology, don’t let technology manipulate you and your learners.

“Technology is just a tool. In terms of getting the kids working together and motivating them, the teacher is most important.”

– Bill Gates

“It is not about the technology; it’s about sharing knowledge and information, communicating efficiently, building learning communities and creating a culture of professionalism in schools. These are the key responsibilities of all educational leaders”. – Marion Ginapolis
