SummaryForms and surfaces always fascinated me since I was a toddler. Hence I persuaded my postgraduation course in ceramics and glass design, which deals with three dimensional forms and two dimensional surfaces. This generated my interest in decorating the spaces or products with which one interacts. AMBIENCE THROUGH STUDIO POTTERY

The project was strategised in such a way where I could derive most through it, right from the preliminary research to seeing the production unit of studio potters to looking at the trends prevailing in the market and studying the mind sets of the end users. Each and every step being crucial gave me a thorough understanding of the making and selling of the products.

In the second phase I was required to come up with a range of ceramics products keeping hand skills as the foremost important. I thus came up with a range of ambience creating garden accessories targeting the elite group of people who have an eye for arts and crafts and love to indulge into hand made products.

The project gave thorough understanding of a studio potter’s set up and came up with products keeping in mind his much

used hand skills.

While coming up with concepts I came up with the idea that the product range should show some line of continuity for my future products. Hence came up with the concept of deriving forms by incorporating the elements existing within the space. Hence the main forms have been elements existing in the garden since these are meant to be going into exterior spaces.

Continuous narration have been used as a tool to represent the activities happening in garden. Also the form should be able to solve the purpose of being a sculpture in the morning and gives an interesting experience at night.

ORNAMENTING SURFACES

Taking OPENING UP as the key word and simple paper craft as representation technique, I came up with tiles surfaces for kids bathroom. Bird became the metaphor for flying high so as to open up and reaching out to people.

Looked into ways to creating newer surfaces and making them appealing for the audiences.

Tried representing the aspect of OPENING UP through the forms created with the help of paper cut outs. At the same time looked at shapes created with the positive and negative play of the same cut outs.

Surfaces of Plates and Quarter Plates have been achieved keeping in mind of not over powering food to be served in the plates. Where as for Drinking Glasses utmost care has been taken of the transparency of the medium and hence achieved an interesting play in foreground and background.

READING THROUGH THE LAYERS

Inflorescence of the Fish Tail Palm Tree, being of utmost importance supporting the rural economy of the Sinhalese culture, have been taken further through sketches, graphics and forms. The various forms have been derived through the inflorescence of this wish conferring tree, keeping in mind the context behind and the various functional aspects attached to it.

It’s sap being the most inevitable thing has been represented as a souvenir with the help of slumped bottles. And the color changing ability while it blossoms has been shown with the help of an ambience creating lamp.

Study of forms seen in nature and their inter-relationship between the structure, form and function in context to it’s

surrounding environment.

Deals with the coming up of a simple product which is easy to produce, cost effective and the material goodness has

been taken care of while designing it.

RE-DEFINING SIMPLICITY

A table top accessory in glass, which is used for de-stressing owing to its sound quality and its interactive capability meant for the professionals.

METHODS OF PRODUCTION• Lathe technique• Lamp blowing

TECHNICAL ASPECTS KEPT IN MIND• Base of the form has been kept heavy so as to making it self balancing.• Hollow rods has been used over the rim so as to insert beads.

PRODUCT FEATURES• Playful & interactive• Easy to maintain• Self balancing• Appealing in its looks• Cost effective• Does not occupy much of space• Diverts the mind

COMPLICATED YET SIMPLEComplex Design Project, helps in sufficing the technical aspects while designing a product so that it fits into an

industrial setting.

Targeting the Higher Income Group and the Elite Class of people of India, as on one hand they seem to be heading towards the global trends and on the other they are deeply rooted to their traditions, their culture. So when it comes to buying a product that speaks about their traditions, their land, their preference resorts on products which stand out.Hence I came up with a set of dining table accessories which consists of the attribute of coming together. This product range consists of the following products -Spoon holderMouth freshener holderCoasters & coaster holder

METHODS OF PRODUCTION• Pressing and Blowing Methods.

PRODUCT FEATURES• Simple and sleek form• Easy to maintain• All the forms have the ability to come together and hence saves space• Diverts the mind

STRUCTURING SYSTEMAcquaints with the way work happens in the system for any sector. Got to learn of how a minor change in a system can

deliver sustainable solutions.

Looked at the Khurja Blue Pottery Cluster in U.P. I worked in the area of giving it a new light by making it look contemporary and finding ways to increasing its visibility amongst people. Giving impetus to the traditional hand painting techniques became the prime focus. Hence I came up with a set of four dry fruit serving bowls which can also be used as souvenirs spreading the craft and puts the finer skills of crafts persons into productivity.

METHODS OF PRODUCTION• Slip Casting

PRODUCT FEATURES• Forms have been derived through tesselations and hence is not limited to certain numbers.• Stack able • Grip able• Easy to producible• Cost effective

LOOK, FEEL & TOUCH

Basic techniques related to Terracotta, Raku, Stoneware and Stoneware + Glass has been explored over here. Methods of production like pinching, coiling, slab and wheel work have worked upon.

Getting hands on with the material - ceramics, exploring it, learning the various techniques associated with it and

developing the skills to tackle it.

SEE THROUGH ME

Basic techniques suitable to the transparent material - Glass has been explored over here. Techniques like Fusing, Slumping, Glass Blowing, Glass Cutting, Intermingling of various materials with glass have been exploited over here. At times material’s limits have been crossed so as to come up to something interesting.

Getting hands on with the material - glass, exploring it, learning the various techniques associated with it and

developing the skills to tackle it.

CRAFTING THE UN-CRAFTED

Basic bench working techniques in metal have been explored over here. Cutting, bending, soldering, filing and buffing have been tried out over here.

At the end of it one was required to come up with a souvenir in silver. SERENITY was the word selected by me and represented the calm, tranquil aspect through the abstract form of a swan.

Getting hands on with the materials Brass and Silver, exploring it and learning the techniques associated with it.

BLENDING FORMS

Understanding was developed by seeing the transition in between two shapes and hence coming up with a form. One was also sensitized towards the changes that take place when two forms or three forms interact and integrate with each other respectively. Thus, lent the basic understanding of forms coming together.

Sensitizing towards the minor changes that happen in a form and seeing the over all difference that can be created.

SOULFUL EXPRESSIONS

A SALUTE TO LIFE!

Time changes, Perceptions varyEvery simple looking phase, Ain’t that easy goingWords have been said, Through the layers laid.

Narrating stories, Dictating pleads Few of them spoken aloud, manier hidden in noises loud.

Personal and most touching experiences have been expressed soulfully though mixed media on fabriano paper.

Too many layers, a sense of ambiguity and fluidity in expression started coming to my work while I was just about to enter my final year during graduation. The whole phenomena started sub - consciously and later turned into a very conscious attempt by the time I reached up my final year. A journey in itself knowing the conscious - the sub conscious.

GRATIFYING SPACES

To get acquainted with the various ways of making murals and adorning the spaces, all of these where made. Exploited the Sand Casting, Mosaic, Stain Glass, Metal Embossing and Dry Fresco Techniques.

Looked out at various techniques for making murals and adding value to an existing space.

SPEAKING THROUGH LENS

Capturing the various shots took interest in patterns and textures, landscapes and portraits from the immediate surroundings and distant lands.

Given basic idea of the working of a camera, play of light and setting of a composition in parts and as a whole.

ORNAMENTED TERRACOTTA OF KUTCHDOCUMENTING THE CRAFTS

The Ornamented Terracotta of Kutch, has its roots since the time of Indus Valley Civilization. Rich in it’s visual appeal is now surviving only through handful families who still practise it. The arrays of motives used have very many layers of meaning hidden into it.

A visit to the field and documenting the craft thus helped me in getting aware of the hardships faced by a crafts person and his family. The nitty gritty’s involved in the making of a product and bringing it to the potential buyers in itself is a big challenge for them. Hence due to lack of visibility and a sense of pride in them they are diverting to various other ways of earning livelihood.

Craft documentation sensitized me in to looking at the socio economic, cultural aspects and the surrounding environment

that help in the creation of a crafts person.
