Critical Thinking

What is critical thinking???

Thinking about things beyond what is written there.

Thinking of things in a new and complex way.

Thinking of things logically and making sense of them.

Active Reading

Read a paragraph or section without taking any notes or highlighting right away.

Once done with a section go through and

take notes in your own words and highlight the

important parts. Highlight of underline phrases, not sentences nor words.

Write questions in margins to go back to later. If you don’t remember the answer go underline the answer in

the text.

Review

Think about the 10-page section you just read. Go to a new paper and write a summary. Go back to the text and answer the questions you

wrote in the margins. When finished with the entire reading, go write

reading journal and organize it so you are

ready for the next time you need it.

Questioner

Helps you write down or think of a few questions about what you are reading, like… What does a word mean?

What did the author write this like this?

What made this happen in the story?

What has happened so far and what do I think will happen next?

How does this all relate?

All of this has a part in your personal reading

procedure!

Before Reading!1. When I am going to read I start with looking through

the reading to see what I will be reading about, using the “Preview” part of P2R.

2. I then usually think about what I know about the topic already, while using the connector role. If you are have the learning style of logical, which is when you possess the ability to understand complex problems, this would be good for you because you would be thinking of what you are going to learn as pieces to something bigger and you would be able to put them together and connect to things you already know.

3. Another thing you could do to get ready to read is set goals and write them down for yourself. If you are a intrapersonal learner, which is when you like to do things by yourself and connect with yourself, because then you can think about what you want to accomplish.

During Reading1. When you actually start to read you need to actively read it, which includes

taking notes, highlighting, and spending enough time on each page or section that your really understand what you are reading and can comprehend it.

2. If you are a visual learner, which is when you learn by seeing pictures of other things, something you could do is draw pictures to help you see what you think the reading would look like. This is also a skill that Illustrator uses to help you remember to draw or just imagine what something looks like to help you understand it better.

3. If you are an interpersonal learner, which is when you like to have others there to help you better understand it, it may help you to talk with someone in between sections to help you understand more of what you are reading about. This also gives you a chance to talk through anything that may have been confusing in the text.

4. You could also write questions along the side for you to come back to answer later after you are completely done with the reading, or other questions that you want to talk about next time you are in class, while playing the role of Questioner.

After Reading1. Once you have finished reading, you can go back and answer the questions

you wrote earlier on the side.

2. You can also go back and find the most important parts, while playing the Passage Master reader role, and write a journal entry about those parts in your own words to show what you have comprehended of it.

3. If you are a Kinesthetic Learner, which is when you like to use your body or motions to help you learn and remember things, you could create a game about what you have learned so that you can interact with the reading but still be doing something to keep you on track.

4. If you are a Musical Learner, which is where you like to use music to help you learn things, you could write a song about what you have read to help you remember the information you have learned.

5. All of these things have helped you finish the P2R ready strategy by Reviewing what you have read.
