My Perfect SockBy Julie Rousculp
A perfect sock. What more could you want? It s simple, its
quick, and it looks great.
Size:
Womens medium [large]: US size 6-7 [8-9]
Gauge:
9 stitches/inch knit in the round
Materials:
Yarn: 100 grams of fingering weight sock yarn.
Needles: US 2 (2.75mm) or size necessary to achieve
gauge. The pattern is written for 4 double pointed needles
but is easily adjusted to magic loop or 2 circulars if you
prefer.
Instructions:
Cast on 56 [64] stitches in your favorite method. I prefer the long tail cast on for a firm yet stretchy cuff.
Divide your stitches evenly between 3 needles and join into the round being careful not to twist your
stitches. You may choose to place a stitch marker at the beginning of the round.
Cuff:
Work k2, p2 rib for 15 rounds (approximately 1.5 inches) or desired length for ribbing.
Leg:
Switch to stockinette stitch (knit every round) for 70 rounds (approximately 6 inches) or desired length
for leg.
Heel Flap:
You will divide for the heel at the beginning of the next round. Knit the first 28 [32] stitches for the heel.Place the remaining stitches on a stitch holder for the instep if preferred. The heel will be knit back and
forth (flat) on 28 [32] stitches as follows:
Row 1: (WS) Sl1, purl to the last stitch, turn
Row 2: (RS) *Sl1, k1* to the last stitch, turn

Repeat these two rows for 33 rows, ending with row 1.
Heel Turn:
Row 1: (RS) sl1, k16, ssk, k1, turn
Row 2: (WS) sl1, p7 [p3], p2tog, p1, turn
Row 3: Sl1, knit to 1 stitch before gap, ssk (use 1 stitch from each side of gap), k1, turn
Row 4: Sl1, purl to 1 stitch before gap, p2tog (use 1 stitch from each side of gap), p1, turn
Repeat rows 3 and 4 until all heel stitches have been worked. 18 stitches should remain. Transfer instepstitches back to a working needle.
Gusset:
With the right side of heel facing you, knit across all heel stitches. With the same needle (n1), pick up 1
stitch in each of the slipped stitches along the left selvedge of the heel flap and 1 stitch in the corner
before the instep stitches (approximately 18 stitches).
Using a second needle (n2), knit across the instep stitches.
Using a third needle (n3), pick up 1 stitch in the corner between the instep stitches and the right
selvedge.
Continue to pick up 1 stitch in each of the slipped stitches along the right selvedge of the heel flap
(approximately 18 stitches). With the same needle, knit 9 of the heel stitches off of n1.
From now on, rounds begin in the center back of the heel. You may wish to place a stitch marker here as
a reminder.
Gusset Decreases:
Rnd 1: Knit.
Rnd 2: Knit to the last 3 stitches on n1, k2tog, k1. Knit across instep stitches on n2. On n3, k1, ssk, knitto the end of round.
Repeat these two rounds until 56 [64] stitches remain.
Foot:
Continue to work in stockinette stitch for 40 rows (approximately 4 inches) or until the sock is 2.5 inches
shorter than the length of your foot.
Toe:
Rnd 1: Knit to the last 3 stitches on n1, k2tog, k1. On n2, k1, ssk, knit to the last three stitches, k2tog,
k1. On n3, k1, ssk, knit to the end of round.
Rnd 2: Knit.
Repeat these two rounds until 32 stitches remain. Then repeat round 1 until only 8 stitches remain. (You
will be decreasing every round rather than every other round.) Graft toe with the Kitchener stitch.
