InauguralEdition2011-2012
We have always had a passion for working with youth. Although we have always been involved in activities and programs that involves youth, we
did not feel complete. We knew that it was something more that could be within the community, but we did not know exactly where they would fit in.
Then it hit us! In 2009, while having conversation with high school students, they started talking about their future. We both noticed that none
of the students mentioned that they wanted to go on and continue their education on the college level. When asked why college was not an option, the general response was, “I never really thought about it.”
It was clear to us that opportunities and information about the benefits of attending college and obtaining a college degree were not being
presented to many students. That was when we decided to take a step in educating, enlightening and encouraging students to set their goals high and pursue a college education. We researched various topics, used our personal and professional experiences, and called on the resources of
friends and associates who are experts in their respective careers to bring together a project that is designed to transform more high school graduates into college graduates. On September 1, 2009 the first
education session was held in Hampton, VA and the work of MY LIFE MY LEGACY Inc. had officially started is designed to make a difference in the lives of high school students in the community. This difference will create a positive ripple effect within society as these students go on and educate
themselves. They will then be able to apply their experiences and continue the “legacy” of making positive differences in the world.
Thank you all very much for your endless support and prayers with you all. Continue to support MLML! With love!
The mission of MY LIFE MY LEGACY Inc. is to educate, encourage, enlighten and empower
youth and prepare them for the future. MY LIFE MY LEGACY Inc. provides programs and services that are designed to teach youth how to properly prepare for a correct course of action, in seeking
their college education.
Recent studies show: -With 180 days of school, 7 hours each day, 1 high school student drops out every 9 seconds. -A 10% increase in high school graduation rates would reduce murder rates by 20%.-An African American Male born today is twice as likely to go to prison than to college.-30% of federal, 40% of state and 50% of death row inmates are non high school graduates.
MLML is committed to turning these numbers around, and to turn high school students into college graduates.
The specific purpose of MY LIFE MY LEGACY Inc. is to provide services and assistance that will help high school students in and
around the City of Hampton, Virginia. These particular opportunities will educate them on the importance of preparing for
their future, and motivate participants to seek post high school education. MY LIFE MY LEGACY Inc. offers programs such as:
- College Preparatory- College Admissions Assistance- Test Preparation and Strategies- College Application Assistance- Scholarship Application and Essay Assistance- Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FASFA) Assistance- Computer/Technology Access- Summer Advancement Assistance- and more....
- MLML is committed to the academic achievement of the young people in our community. We believe in the power of attaining a college degree and we have effectively been able to spread our
passion of education to the youth that we serve.
-Our goal is to provide an atmosphere that fosters collegiate concepts to MLML participants. Each activity and event initiated
by MLML will give every student an opportunity to increase his/her awareness of the importance of college.
-Our ultimate goal will be measured by the amount of students who are accepted and enrolled in an institution of higher learning after completing high school. Success will also be measured by
the increase in number of our participants and sponsors throughout the course of the year.
We are so excited about this up coming school year. Our motto for the 2011-2012 year is “Make No Excuses for Your Success.” Last year we were able to assist 8 seniors in getting enrolled into college. That is our goal! That is what we are here to do! Shout outs to Sharice, Amber, Kim, Shanell, Victoria, Mike, Jalen and Stephan!

These young people made NO excuses, as they battled through obstacles throughout high school that only made them stronger
and more prepared for their future.
MLML’s class of 2011 were a hard working group that put forth effort to set themselves apart from the rest. They spent countless hours grinding on the things that were
important to them in regards to their academic future. Even though most of them were very active in their own high
school, being in different clubs and various extra curricular activities, they still pushed themselves and each other to
play a major role in the development of MLML. This group was a special group that had been through a lot
together. They also were a talented group. Their talents included anything between being musically talented,
technologically savvy, fashion savvy to being able to speak Latin. Some of their gifts and abilities haven’t even been
discovered yet.So what MLML decided to do in order for our audience to
really get a feel for these great future leaders, we participated in a short interview with Sharice Allen, Kim
Haney and Amber Stokes during the radio show…

Research done by the staff of MLML Magazine found interesting facts about some of the most successful celebrities. Although
submerged in stardom, many icons realize that attaining college education is critical to their success. Here are a few…
Denzel Washington - Actor. Studied Drama and Journalism and graduated from Fordham University. (http://kristinemanley.hubpages.com).
Adam Sandler - Actor. Received his Masters of Fine Arts from New York University (http://kristinemanley.hubpages.com).
Oprah Winfrey - Talk Show Host. Studied Speech and Drama and graduated from Tennessee State University (
http://kristinemanley.hubpages.com).
Shaquille O’Neal attended Louisiana State University where he was a dominant college basketball player. He earned his degree in General Studies which he received in 2000. Later he went to earn his Master’s in Business Administration from the University
of Phoenix (www.collegecrunch.org, http://blog.ecollegefinder.org)
The lyrics to Luda's "Tell It Like It Is" - "Start up ya own company, trademark the name/ That's gon' run ya bout a grand so start
savin' ya change" - sounds like a lesson in Music Business 101. Maybe that's because Ludacris majored in Music Management at
Georgia State University (http://blogs.houstonpress.com.)
Both of the founders of MLML have backgrounds in Music Education. Needless to say, music was a major inspiration
to them as they trudged through the challenging yet rewarding times of their college careers.
According to www.brainhealthandpuzzles.com, there was a study conducted to test the effects of music on the brains of
college students. This study looked at the effects of listening to Mozart before taking an IQ test. Among three groups, one
listening to relaxation tapes and one listening to nothing, the group listening to Mozart had the highest average score.
In order to see what inspires the people close to MLML, they conducted a survey in which the subjects, who were college
graduates, were asked this question:
WHAT IS A SONG THAT KEPT YOU MOTIVATED TO CONTINUE THROUGHOUT YOUR COLLEGE CAREER?
Here are the responses…
“I Told the Storm” by Greg O’Quinn (Class of 2000)
“Bombs Over Baghdad” by Outkast (Class of 2002)
“Except What God Allows” by Hezekiah Walker (Class of 2002)
Any Song by Earth Wind and Fire (Class of 1981)
“Keep on Moving” by Soul II Soul (Class of 2001)
“He’s a Keeper” by Rodney Bryant (Class of 2007)
“Nothing Even Matters” by Lauryn Hill (Class of 2000)
“I’ll Keep Holding On” by Kim Burrell (Class of 2000)
“Spread My Wings” by Troop (Class of1995)
“I Get the Job Done” by Big Daddy Kane (Class of 1995)
The Radicals for Christ Album by Fred Hammond (Class of 2000)
Share My World Album by Mary J. Blige (Class of 2000)
“Motivation” by T.I. (Class of 2005)
This month’s spot indeed goes to a very good friend of MLML, author Nicole Ellis (George Mason University). Nicole and her family have been consistent supporters of MLML from the very
beginning of its time. She is a very intelligent, optimistic, talented and caring individual (just to give a few adjectives), who is not
afraid to express her love for Christ. She supports MLML so we will definitely support Nicole Ellis and you should too!
