Since we will be working closely with one another, I want you to know a bit about me, my leadership philosophy, and the ideals I try to live up to. I also want to convey what my expectations are of you. I want both of us to refer to this document regularly so that you can keep me honest in my dealings with you, so we know my expectations of you, and to ensure that we work together to exceed the expectations of everyone, including ourselves. Leadership: I believe a leader is someone people are willing to follow because of who he or she is and what that person stands for, not because they have a title and the authority that comes with it. As a leader, I will work to create an environment where your inherent greatness can blossom. I will: Create a safe and stimulating environment Challenge you beyond your current comfort zone Be there when you need me and disappear when you don’t Recognize and reward your accomplishments Help you meet your career goals and aspirations Traits I Value: Honesty – Speak the whole truth; omit nothing. Don’t do anything morally wrong. Integrity – Harmony in what you think, say, and do. Accountability – Own It! Drive It! Transparently Report On It! Open Mindedness – Your ideas aren’t always the best ideas. Collaborate and accept ideas from others. Having Fun! – Be professional when it is called for, otherwise, keep your sense of humor. Working With Me: We are not individuals in our efforts; we will all pull in the same direction. We accept failure together and we celebrate success together. Using daily, weekly, and milestone goals, we will work smart and hard.

Leadership:I believe a leader is someone people are willing to follow because of who he or she is and what that person stands for, not because they have a title and the authority that comes with it.

As a leader, I will work to create an environment where your inherent greatness can blossom. I will: Create a safe and stimulating environment Challenge you beyond your current comfort zone Be there when you need me and disappear when you don’t Recognize and reward your accomplishments Help you meet your career goals and aspirations

Traits I Value: Honesty – Speak the whole truth; omit nothing.

We accept failure together and

we celebrate success together. Using daily, weekly, and milestone goals, we will work smart and hard. Mistakes will be used as learning experiences and not as punishable offenses. If something is threatening to throw us off schedule or miss our objectives, inform me as soon as you see

the cliff. Be thinking of ideas for an avoidance/recovery plan. You will not be asked to do something or make a sacrifice that I am not willing to make myself.

My Expectations of You: Consistently get your work done on time. Do this and I will give you latitude and autonomy. I expect you to do your best at every assigned task. Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. If I don’t “walk what I talk”, be my friend and call me out on it. I need your help in becoming a better

person and leader.

Things That I Am Not Good With:

Page 2: My Leadership Philosophy - Tom Blair

Misrepresenting a Situation – We need to make decisions having ALL the pertinent information, not just what you want us to here.

Patronizing People – Talking down to others is unproductive and destructive to the team. Assuming Other’s Responsibilities – By doing so, you rob someone of a growing experience and often

waste time duplicating work. Claiming Another’s Success or Blaming Another for Your Mistakes – This will stifle collaboration and

reduce innovation. Going Around Me – If I am doing something wrong or making a poor decision, talk to me. I know I am not

always right and you may have information, insight, or wisdom that I need to hear. Doing so will increase my respect for you, not diminish it.

A Few of My Quirks: I don’t like being told what to do and how to do it. Rarely do I turn down someone who asks respectfully. I am passionate and can have strong opinions. But I am also open-minded, challenge me, change my

mind. I tend to see things (or try to simplify things) to black and white. Don’t move my banana slugs. They are very hard to put back in place.

My top priority is you. Without you, we cannot meet the company’s strategic objectives. So, like the Boy Scouts, my motto will be to leave it better than I found it. I will endeavor to do this with you by:

Doing my best to shield you from distractions so that you can focus on doing what you do best. Regularly updating you on relevant company news and the company’s quarterly status. Moonlighting as a coach, psychologist, mentor, barf bucket, sounding board, etc. My door is always open. Supporting you and your family in whatever needs you may have. I strongly believe that if we take care of

you and your family, you will take care of us.

I find little else as satisfying as seeing individuals succeed and grow. I will make every effort provide an environment where you can do this.
