My Summer Experience
“The time I spent there consisted of a roller coaster of emotions ranging from
frustration and exhaustion to satisfaction, amusement and utter
gratification.”
“My biggest hurdle preventing me from having a successful experience at Kabliji School was the cultural barrier between my students and myself… Their lack of communication with me made me very
frustrated and seemingly resulted in me feeling like I was expending excessive
efforts to no avail.”
“The students’ abilities and potential was only demonstrated to me when I decided
to stop teaching them the way I was asked to.”
“I initiated a paper-mâché project whereby I provided them with various materials
for them to use as they desired.”
“I was in awe at their final product as I understood the significance of the leap
they had taken in producing their artworks in terms of being more
confident and creative without fear of being criticized for deviating from the
norm.”
Language barrier?
“Everybody smiles in the same language.”

“Given that it was my last day, I promised each class a farewell party… I bought soft drinks, snacks, music and
games.”
…However…
“To some extent, I felt relieved that it was time for me to leave as a result of
the demanding efforts I had to put in and working in a very harsh environment…
…the only thing that saddened me was the students’ reaction to my departure.”
