VIRGINIA PAGNUTTI LANGUAGE II TV ESSAY: MY HISTORY AS A WRITER

DATE: 1/10/07

When I think about my history as a writer I consider basically three aspects: the characteristics of the skill of writing, how I learned to write and my personal experience in writing. The latter related to the things I have written and the frequency I have done it. I like writing. Moreover, I express myself better in written form than orally. But producing a good piece of writing is not an easy objective to achieve. The most common problems you face are running out of ideas and not having enough spare time to devote to the tasks of thinking about a topic, writing down your ideas, reading and correcting the text you wrote and rewriting it. These are basically the steps you have to follow if you want to be successful at writing. They seem to be simple tasks but, in practice are difficult to do. I did not have enough practice in writing when I was at primary school, but in fact I can remember having worked a lot with grammar. This is a very important aspect to take into consideration when thinking about developing writing skills. Then, at secondary school I learned to recognize and work on different types of written pieces, such as narratives, poems, interviews, etc. At present, I am attending language lessons at the English Teachers Training College, where I am working more deeply to develop my writing skills. Regarding the pieces of writing I have produced in my life, I remember a fairytale I wrote at secondary school and lots of compositions I wrote in my English lessons, which I still keep in a folder. When I was a teenager I wrote a poem on my own, and used to write in my diary too. I also interchanged letters with a group of friends from another school which was two hours and a half far from mine. Even though during my learning process my purpose was not to become a writer, I think I have developed my writing skills fairly well by just having a good attitude towards writing. Now, at Teachers Training College, I am working hard on essays and hope to be ready to produce good pieces of writing in the end. (370 words)
