“Even so Mr. Rogers, I’m grateful”With that comment the conversation I was having with one of our guests came to an end. His was an all too familiar story - one with the typical ups and downs of everyday life, but with a twist. His story was a bit different than perhaps your story because his story included being served at Cherry Street.

But then I think, even as I write this article, if my assertion is true about whether your story and his story are really that different – since in fact, you both have been served at Cherry Street. You may have needed to volunteer. That need was met at Cherry Street. You may have needed to participate in something significant; like building a relationship with a stranger. Your need landed you at Cherry Street. And as a result of the work we do together, your need was met.

As a matter of fact I’ve become, and happily so, one of the hundreds of men, women and children who have come through our doors just over the last 24 hours. My need to serve, to make a difference, to meet interesting people is met at Cherry Street, just like Teresa on the following page.

When I reflect on my time at Cherry Street and how much positive impact this ministry has on my life, marriage and family – it warms my heart. Could I invite you to consider how much Cherry Street has meant to you and warmed your heart over the years? Consider how much warm heartedness you’ve provided over the years.

Thanks for sharing your warmth.

When your mother has an addiction that is destroying your family, you want her to get help. Your heart’s desire is for real transformation that will last.

Teresa Greer, currently supervisor at the Sparrow’s Nest, remembers the pain her mother’s addiction was causing. Teresa says her mother had been to several rehab facilities and didn’t find lasting help. In the hospital once again – and ready to give up – Teresa’s mother called Cherry Street Mission Ministries. “She entered Ready for Life (RFL) program right away,” Teresa recalls. “We couldn’t see her or talk to her for 30 days. We prayed a lot during that time.”

Teresa says that after six months in RFL, her mom received a fresh start. She was being changed as God worked on her heart and mind. “Plus, she was offered a job by Cherry Street, and an opportunity to go to school. She worked full-time at the Sparrow’s Nest. The same job I now have!”

Working in a factory, she didn’t even want to work at Sparrow’s Nest like her mother. “But God had other plans,” according to

Teresa, “and He put me here for His own reasons.” Teresa came to work at Cherry Street because of the transformation she saw in her mother’s life.

“God has me doing the same job my mother did at cherry street!”

Teresa is known for her ability to keep it real with Cherry Street guests. Teresa uses her mom’s story to help guests, and she believes it has had an impact. I always pray before I talk to people and I ask God to show me what I’m supposed to say. Sometimes I think I’m going to go one way and He has me go a whole other direction.”

Seeing her mother’s transformation coming from submission to God, Teresa is grateful for the lives that have been impacted. “Let me tell you something, since she’s been gone, she’s saved a lot of my family members’ lives. My sister, for one. She has gone from being mad at God, to can’t get enough of Him. And now, she’s about to become a pastor’s wife! And that’s how God works!”

impacted by the transformation for her mother, Teresa now impacts the lives of others.

Look What You've Done!

Dave’s Running Shop, in partnership with WTOL 11and Fox Toledo presented Cherry Street a check for $9465.81. Over 2,200 people participated in the event to make an impact on the lives of those in need.

The Rotary Club of Toledo provided a generous donation of $10,000 to purchase new mattresses for our men’s facility and for the Sparrow’s Nest women’s facility. The new mattresses were much needed and our guests are appreciating much improved sleep – thanks to you, Rotary Club of Toledo!

A few years ago, Karri Knoblaugh was inspired by the Grey Dress Project started by Bowling Green State University to

start her own Grey Dress Project. The Grey Dress Project challenges women to wear the same dress for an extended period of time, every day. It is to show demonstrate how factions or women lack choices and options. Wearing the same dress over and over demonstrates that lack of choice.

She and her friend, Abbi Petee, challenged themselves to wear the

same dress for 30 days. Karri turned to Abbi and said, “We can do this!”. Abbi and Karri decided as stay at home mothers, they wanted earn money for and stay focused on families in need in our community. Karri explained this was also a way to have their children involved on a daily basis and demonstrate the need for compassion and putting your passion into action. In the second year, a mutual friend, Dani Bucher, joined the group. This third year yet another friend joined, adding Bethany Widmer to the campaign. Each year they have raised more money than the year previous. The Grey Dress Project this past Christmas provided all the presents under the Tree for one family staying with Cherry Street Mission at our Hope House 21 transitional house. They also provided gifts for one of our guests and her two children; a recently re-homed family with a newborn baby was gifted with many baby items and diapers; gas cards for one of our families who is traveling across Ohio for cancer treatments for their son. Karri shared they had a few last minute donations made to them. They intend to purchase some essentials for the Sparrow’s Nest.

Grey Dress Project

Zion Lutheran Church in Waterville, OH recently donated $8,230 for the purchase of new bedding and clothing for our guests. What a practical way to express the warmth of God’s love. Thank you, Zion Lutheran!

This year, Box Out Hunger set new records as churches, businesses and others, joined forces to combat hunger and provide a Thanksgiving feast. Thanks to our partners who made significant contributions to the success of our event: United Healthcare, Applebees, Andersons, IRBN, Seagate Food Bank, Enpuzzlement and Klar Leadership Academy.

As a unified group, we gathered, prepared and delivered Thanksgiving meals to a record number of people in our community. Area churches put teams together and delivered Thanksgiving food boxes to families in their homes while having the opportunity to represent God and their churches to their neighbors.

• 2,000 food boxes were delivered. Families received everything needed to prepare a Thanksgiving meal in their own homes. • 24,000 pounds of turkey and 8,000 pounds of food were distributed • 374 volunteer hours were logged • 189 volunteers• 31 different churches supported and/or participated

As part of their tradition, Hylant made a Box Out Hunger donation to Cherry Street Mission Ministries, totaling more than $4.000. In sharing what their organization values, Diana Cable said, “Hylant is very active in our community and we encourage that with our partners and employees.” Clare Hylant added, “We are a home grown organization ourselves and we choose to support those who are working in our community directly.

Diana had a goal to raise enough money to purchase 100 boxes during our Box Out Hunger campaign. Through events like the bake sales, jeans days, and donations from the employees, they exceeded their goal.

Plant a volunteer team. Harvest results for our community. Thrivent will give you the seed money!

It starts with an idea powered by your passion. Bring a team together to make an immediate

impact on a cause you care about. And Thrivent Financial will help get you started. It's easy!

1. Think about an unmet need in your community and how you could help.

2. Apply to lead your volunteer team in a one-time fundraiser, service activity or educational event that can be completed within 90 days. Perhaps a Cherry Street facility need?

Or a certain number of Thanksgiving food boxes sponsored through an educational event with a focus on understanding homelessness?

If your project is approved, you'll receive a Thrivent Action Kit, including: • Promotional banner.• Invitations and thank-you cards.• Thrivent Action Team T-shirts.• A $250 Community Impact VISA card you can use as seed money to purchase project supplies and create promotional materials.

For more information and to apply, visit: thrivent.com/making-a-difference/living-generously/thrivent-action-teams/

Thrivent choice dollars can be designated to cherry street, as well.

Clozell is a familiar face at Cherry Street, but keeps to himself most of the time. He loves to write, and he recently engaged a Cherry Street team member in a conversation. “I’d like to write you a note”, Clozell said. This was unusual.

Part of the note said: “Would you be my uncle?”

The staff member sat down and talked with him: “Clozell, what does it mean to be your uncle?” He replied: “I need you to tell me I’m intelligent.”

Clozell is looking for conversation and relationship that will bring him hope. As a monthly Pillar of Hope donor, you make these sorts of conversations possible by investing each month in the men and women that come to Cherry Street. Your consistent investment and impact make it possible for trust and consistency to be built in the lives of your brothers and sisters.

Have you considered how you can make that consistent impact of purposeful conversation through the entire year in the lives of your brothers and sisters?

You can contact Craig Magrum, Donor Development

Specialist at 419-214-4171 or [email protected] with any questions about becoming

a monthly Pillar of Hope.

Would you be my uncle?
