DESCRIPTION

Have you ever wonder why some parent's don't like to read books to their children? At 18 months of age significant differences are present between children from disadvantage families and children from advantage families. This difference will later transform into the achievement gap, which is costing the US 9-16% of its GDP. Here it's a small contribution to the understanding of the problem in particular with the Latino population. How can we help mothers that are motivated to participate in closing the gap?

I created a text reminderprogram and a phone call follow up for 15 Latino Mothers in San Jose, CA who wanted to read books to their infants as a new habit. But . . .

Page 11: My First Book

Mothers complained that their children DON’T like to read

books, so they WON’T read more books to

them… too HARD for both

Motivation and remainders are NOT

enough to create a habit because these Mothers are

having problems enjoying the activity and making it enjoyable for

their children

Mothers were afraid of the infant touching the book and in many cases the mothers didn’t show

the pictures to the infants and didn’t like

the infant to interrupt

An  emphasis  on  the  book        as  a  tool  to  share  high  quality  and  quantity  interaction  is  very

important.  The  first  goal  is  for  mother  and  child  to  enjoy  the  experience  in  order  to  build  upon  it
