my first book
DESCRIPTION
Have you ever wonder why some parent's don't like to read books to their children? At 18 months of age significant differences are present between children from disadvantage families and children from advantage families. This difference will later transform into the achievement gap, which is costing the US 9-16% of its GDP. Here it's a small contribution to the understanding of the problem in particular with the Latino population. How can we help mothers that are motivated to participate in closing the gap?TRANSCRIPT

Why is SO important for Latino infants to
start developing book reading habits as early
as possible?
Significant differences in abilities between
children of advantaged families and children
of disadvantaged families is present at
18 months of age already
30% of people living in poverty
in the US are Latinos
McKin$ey ¢alculated the co$t of the achievement gap a$ to be 9-16 per¢ent of the
GDP in 2008
Economy Nobel Prize, Heckman proposes social
policy to be directed towards the malleable early years
How can we help motivated Latino Mothers to read
more to their children?
Stanford Graduate Student in Learning, Design, and Technology Passionate about Early Childhood Educa@on Stanford Visi@ng Scholar for 2 years at the Center for Infant Studies La@na and Ac@ve Member of the La@no Community Experience with La@no’s Parent Programs
I created a text reminderprogram and a phone call follow up for 15 Latino Mothers in San Jose, CA who wanted to read books to their infants as a new habit. But . . .
Mothers complained that their children DON’T like to read
books, so they WON’T read more books to
them… too HARD for both
Motivation and remainders are NOT
enough to create a habit because these Mothers are
having problems enjoying the activity and making it enjoyable for
their children
Mothers' parents didn’t read books to them
Mothers only interac6on with books
was at school
Mothers were afraid of the infant touching the book and in many cases the mothers didn’t show
the pictures to the infants and didn’t like
the infant to interrupt
An emphasis on the book as a tool to share high quality and quantity interaction is very
important. The first goal is for mother and child to enjoy the experience in order to build upon it
To develop…
Customized technologies that make easier to read children’s books for these
