Update on construction

It has been a frustrating year for the construction project at La Finca. A packet of paper-work was prepared and present-ed to the Salvadoran equivalent of the EPA in August. The pa-perwork was returned with 30 observations to be addressed and overcome. After much work, the packet was resubmitted in January of this year, and several final steps will need to be completed be-fore construction can begin. Meanwhile, the ministry of La Casa has continued to build relationships with our future neighbors. One visiting team took school supplies and equip-ment to a small public school

oversight of the project. The funding exists for building two homes that will allow for the children to move to La Finca. While the delays in construction have been frustrating and dis-couraging, we know that God’s timing is always best. Surely the delay has been a necessary prepa-ration for all that will follow.

nearby. Other teams have hiked through the woods around La Fin-ca to take beans and rice to fami-lies in isolated areas. Whitney Powell has discovered several children with disabilities who live in the neighborhood and has begun providing equine therapy for them. Third Lens (www.third-lens.org), a ministry which pro-vides comprehensive construction management to front-line minis-tries in need of facilities, master planning and architectural design, has continued its partnership with La Casa. Last year they sent a couple of teams to El Salvador to build retaining walls and complete other infrastructure projects. They also continue to provide expertise in the permitting process and

Transitioning to the workforce

My Father’s House International– Annual Report

La Casa de Mi Padre has been blessed to serve several children with special needs. These dear ones have brought lots of love and joy, but they come with additional challeng-es concerning independent living once they reach adult-hood. Jobs are scarce in to-day’s society, and those with disabilities may not have many opportunities for employment. Luis, younger brother of Fran-cisco Pinto, has watched his older sibling get a job and begin to make his way in the world. Last fall, Luis joined his brother in the move to in-dependence. In September, Luis began a job in the kitchen of a hotel in San Salvador. He works from 3:00-11:00, six days a week,

long hours which are not un-common for workers in El Sal-vador. Luis has a bank account and his very own debit card. He is quite proud of his independ-ence, and we are praising God for His provision of this em-ployment opportunity. Please pray for Luis as he learns to budget his money. Pray also that God will provide a permanent housing alternative for these young men who are too old to live in the children’s home. They are currently living at The Bridge under the close supervision of Tio Julio, but they need a place all their own. We know that these special ones are precious in the Lord’s sight!

2013 Mission Journey Once again, My Father’s House International partnered with the Richmond Virginia chapter of the Christian Medi-cal and Dental Association (CMDA) to provide medical and dental care to the people of El Salvador. This year the team served in a poor beach community near La Libertad, in the town of Santo Tomas where the property which will one day be home to the chil-dren of La Casa is located, and at La Finca itself where the team ministered to our future neighbors. Doctors and den-tists, physical therapists and pharmacists, students and pro-fessionals provided a caring touch and a listening ear to those who seldom receive ei-ther.

But as always, the greater impact was on those who came to serve. Each member of the team was forever changed by the faces and the stories of the people they met. For some it was a 78 year old woman named Martala who came for a skin infection and prayed for the healing of her family who had abandoned her. Others remember the privilege of praying with a young woman named Kenya, so desperate to learn that she was pregnant. Still others remember the laughter of children or the soft skin of a baby they held. We are grateful to the staff of La Casa de mi Padre for host-ing our team and providing opportunities for service.

Beautiful Faces, Grateful Hearts

Our 2013 Graduates– Ana Silvia and Estrella

Since its inception, La Casa de Mi Padre has recog-nized the importance of its children’s education. Many have had little or no access to formal schooling prior to their arrival. Our educational pro-gram has involved careful choice of schools to meet indi-vidual needs, along with much tutoring and remediation. Vol-unteer and paid tutors provide individualized attention, and all staff members are involved in homework supervision.

I thank my God in all my re-membrance of you. (Phil. 1:3)

Much time, money, and prayer go into the schooling of those entrusted to our care. 2013 brought the La Casa family great cause for celebra-tion: two more of our young ladies, Estrella and Silvia, have graduated from high school. Silvia came to La Casa at age seven, a shy girl from whom we could not elicit a smile. Traces of that little girl are hard to find in the confident young woman she is today. She placed second in her class and had the highest graduation test score and thesis grade. Even before her gradua-tion, Silvia began an introducto-ry course at the Evangelical University at the end of 2013, and she is continuing her studies in elementary education in the new year. Estrella has been at La Casa since she was ten years old, and last year has been a particularly difficult one for her. Despite

many challenges, she perse-vered and finished well. Estrel-la wants to be an event planner and was offered an internship at a local hotel. She is continu-ing her studies in 2014. What a privilege it was for the staff of La Casa to watch these two young ladies walk across the stage and receive their high school diplomas! Although the education of La Casa’s children is both labor-intensive and expensive, this investment is yielding divi-dends in lives changed and dreams fulfilled.
