Theme Notes Series 313: My Family, Your Family Page 1 of 11 My Family, Your Family A family is those who love and care for you. Young children need love and care for their health, well- being, for play and for learning. Families are different and may include mums, dads, cousins, grandparents, aunties and uncles, brothers and sisters and friends. There are many fun things that families can do together like gardening, cooking, or swimming at the pool. In this series of Play School we celebrate a wedding and tell stories about the different things families do together. The Play School toy family also welcome a new baby and we meet some children who introduce us to their families through the windows. Come along as we follow the adventures of the Bottle People Village, some hens and chicks stop by for a visit and we welcome a very special guest presenter Emma’s baby daughter Anouk!

My Family, Your Family

A family is those who love and care for you. Young children need love and care for their

health, well- being, for play and for learning.

Families are different and may include mums, dads, cousins, grandparents, aunties and

uncles, brothers and sisters and friends. There are many fun things that families can do

together like gardening, cooking, or swimming at the pool.

In this series of Play School we celebrate a wedding and tell stories about the different things

families do together. The Play School toy family also welcome a new baby and we meet

some children who introduce us to their families through the windows.

Come along as we follow the adventures of the Bottle People Village, some hens and chicks

stop by for a visit and we welcome a very special guest – presenter Emma’s baby daughter

MAKE AND DO

How to Make a Photo Picture Book

You will need:

8-10 x printed photos

Glue stick

4 x sheets of cardboard

Sticky tape

Tape the four sheets of cardboard into one long strip, taping along the short edge each time.

Fold each page of cardboard into two so that the long strip of all the sheets of cardboard are

like a concertina.

Paste one or two photos onto each half page.

Fold the cardboard up into a book.

Flip through your photo book and look at all your memories!

MAKE AND DO

How to Make a Paper Hat

You will need:

Paper plates

Ribbons

Scissors

Masking tape

Elastic

Cut out the centre of the paper plate, leaving

the rim.

Use the cut out middle section to cut out a

flower or star shape for your hat, stick it on with

tape.

Attach colourful ribbons or stickers to your hat

using tape.

Make a small hole on either side of the hat.

Thread the elastic through and tie a knot on

each side so that you can wear the hat by

pulling the elastic under your chin.

How to Make a Celebration Cake

You will need:

2 x round cakes

(or large cake cut in half through

centre to make two round pieces)

1 ½ cups of ricotta

2 x tablespoons of honey

Washed strawberries, blueberries and

raspberries

1x Banana

1 x Passionfruit

Combine the ricotta and honey in a mixing

bowl.

Mix together with the wooden spoon.

Spread the ricotta mixture over the top of each

of the cakes.

Prepare the fruit by cutting up the strawberries

and banana.

Cut the passionfruit in half and scoop the pulp

out into a small bowl.

Spread the blueberries over the ricotta on one

cake and then put the other cake on top.

Decorate the top layer of the cake with the

banana, strawberries and raspberries and finish

it by drizzling the passion fruit over the top.

Enjoy a piece of your yummy celebration cake!

MAKE AND DO

How to Make a Crab

You will need:

A ball of wool, a loofah or a scourer

4 x pipe cleaners

Small round stickers

Empty plastic jar or container

Push three pipe cleaners through the middle of the ball of wool, loofah or scourer and bend the

ends to make the crab’s legs.

Bend another pipe cleaner in half and push it into the ball of wool at the front to make the crab’s

claws.

Stick the two round stickers on the front for the eyes.

Decorate the plastic jar or container with some stickers, ribbons, anything you like.

Place your crab inside the container – a new home!

Choose a name for your crab and have some crabby adventures together.

How to Make a Pond Painting

You will need:

Large sheet of paper

Paints

Paintbrushes

Paint smock

Sponge

Bubble wrap

Elastic band

Paper plates

Pour one colour of paint onto each paper plate.

Paint a pond on your large sheet of paper.

You could include water, rocks and plants.

Tie the bubble wrap up with an elastic band. Dip it in to the white paint and press it onto the

edge of your pond to make frog eggs.

Dip your thumb into some brown paint and press it onto the paper to make little tadpoles, use

your pinkie finger to make their tails.

Press the sponge into some green paint and then press it onto the paper to make some frogs.

Use some orange paint and a paintbrush to paint some big and little fish in the pond.

Use some black paint to paint a long wriggly eel.

Make a sticker finger family! Draw faces on

some round stickers and stick them to each

finger and your thumb. Which finger is your

brother or sister? Which ones are your

How to Make Tabbouleh Salad

You will need:

1 x cup burghul (bulgur) wheat

2 x cups boiling water

1 x lemon

12 x cherry tomatoes

½ cup mint

1 x cup parsley

Salt

Pepper

3 x tablespoons olive oil

Ask an adult to pour two cups of boiling water over the burghul wheat and leave to soak for 15

minutes, then drain.

Juice one lemon.

Cut the cherry tomatoes in half.

Using the scissors, snip the herbs into small pieces.

Place the tomatoes in the salad bowl along with the herbs.

Next add salt and pepper to taste.

Pour the lemon juice in and then add the burghul wheat and olive oil.

Mix it all together with the wooden spoon.

Enjoy your yummy, zesty tabbouleh salad!
