BRAND IDENTITY: My magazine is called ‘K’. It will promote both British and American music, bands and artists. I named it ‘K’ and it features the popular music that you hear in the current charts.IMAGE: I took a close up shot of my front cover artist, which covers the majority of the page. The image bIeeds off the page, I aimed for this shot because I wanted it to stand out and it shows her importance by covering the whole of the cover.COLUMN INCH: The text on the column inch promotes some of the other features that are in the magazine but isn’t the main featured topic – my article.

AUDIENCE

I aimed my magazine at mainly age17-20 year olds. I picked this age group because they would be more likely to buy it weekly. That’s why I decided to price it at £1.99 – as it is a reasonable price that most people would be willing to spend on a magazine which offers everything they want to read about. It is suitable for both genders as different artists that both genders like will be featured. The genre of my magazine is ‘Pop’/’R & B’ so it is targeted at people who enjoy listening to this style of music, artists such as, Beyoncé, Cold play, Professor Green and Pixie Lott.

TEXT

I kept the same font for the whole page and made it bigger for certain text, for example; my main title, tagline and the artist’s name. I used 3 main colours, red, black and white, keeping with her outfit and sunglasses. I included a white back shadow on the main headings which I wanted to stand out. I reversed the colours for the artist’s name and the title to make them stand out overall. I am happy with how the text looks against the image overall.

INSTITUTIONS An institution I could use would be EMAP as they are successful with their magazine ‘Q’. This would rival magazines such as NME, allowing more promotion of the magazine and more of an audience. My Magazine promises to introduce new bands and artist’s for the first time in our magazine as Pop is quite a popular genre.

REPRESENTATION

Lady J is a 21st century music icon, much like Katy Perry, Rihanna, Ellie Golding and similar artists. The iPod, connote that she is in the music industry. Also the fashion indicates that she has style and attitude. The earrings connote wealth and success. She is situated in the ‘Pop’ genre but also ‘R & B’.

On the left is my practice student magazine’s cover. This is what I designed at the start of the year. Compared to my Music magazine cover on the right. As you can see i have become more experience with Photoshop and there is a clear improvement. I have learnt how to edit shadows and effects on the title in my music cover, compared with the simple text of my ‘DESIRE’. I also have designed my music cover with style, represented to the genre. I have a clear backdrop whereas on my student cover, the background doesn’t fit in. I have also included a barcode to my music magazine, which makes it look more realistic and presentable.

What You’ve Learnt About Technologies?

How have your Photoshop skills developed?During the process of making my magazine cover, I have been able to use a wide range of techniques on Photoshop, for example, using the back drop shadow on the text, with inner glows etc. I have been able to edit my image using the contrast/light tools and more.

Photography: How proficient were you beforehand? When I set up the photo shoot for my front cover I made sure that there was nothing else in the background, so that I had a clear shot of my model. The lightening was spotlighted onto her from above which gives that it is about her.

Blogging: What blogging / web design experience did you have before beginning the portfolio? I had used Word press before, for my mock magazine to upload my previous work that is designed for my cover, for example; research – questionnaires, practice magazine analysis etc.

I used In design for both my contents page and my double page spread article.

EVALUATION; contents page

I have used three pictures on my contents page. They are all recording artists featured in the magazine. I have included two other photos other than the main artist on the front page to show that they are featured in the magazine, but not the main topic. My main cover image is featured at the bottom of my contents page to show that it is has an article on this artist. Again I have carried on the same three colours throughout the page, but with a beige background and black and purple text which is attractive. I have used the same style writing across the page but different sizes for the parts I want to stand out more. Especially the words ‘contents page’ in the title.

EVALUATION; double page spread

I have used the same colour scheme throughout my magazine pieces, I have used black as the main colour with the important parts in bold and purples to create colour cohesion. For my article I designed an interview between ‘K’ and ‘Lady J’. On the bottom left-hand corner of the image, I have promoted her new album.I used text over her pink top and changed the font for it to be seen and stand out over it. I like how my image bleeds off the side of the page which it is on, it shows her importance as she is covering a whole side of the page .
