Portugal's original natural forests are found in the mountains but a wide variety of trees grow throughout the country. These include eucalyptus, maple, cork oaks, pines, poplar, chestnuts and olives. Among the flowering plants are mimosa, orchids, broom, lavender, rosemary and thyme.

In the forests of northern Portugal the wildlife includes foxes, chamois, wild boars, wolves, lynx and golden eagles. Wildfowl and other water-loving birds, including flamingoes, are common on the coastal lagoons like this one.!!

The Old Legend of Barcelos' Cock

Once a certain man was condemned at Barcelos', a small town on the North of Portugal, to be hanged for a crime which he had not committed. In vain did he swear his innocence but found no alibi to prove the truth of his affirmation. Under a sudden faith impulse, he appealed to Our Lady and St. James, his patron Saint, for protection, imploring them to release him from the unjust sentence he was going to serve. Then, he asked to be allowed to go to the presence of the Judge, since it was his last wish. The Magistrate received him in his dining room, where he was having a meal. Once again, the man under sentence of death, swore his innocence, and as a sudden defiance to Providence he added, that the roasted cock which lay on a tray on the Judge's table would get up and crow if his statements were really true. And, indeed, the rooster immediately jumped up out from the tray and started crowing vibrantly. This legend has passed from generation to generation down through the centuries and the well known and typic Cock of Barcelos', is therefore a symbol of faith, justice, good luck and hope.

Portugal ranks as one of the most developed nations in the world (26th rank IDC) with an open global economy. Its specific advantages include its geographical position, natural endowment and the economic and social environement.

Solid economic, political and social stability during last decades continues to make Portugal attractive for foreign investment. It has a well trained, produtive and highly skilled labor force enhanced by solid private/public sector relationships.

Portuguese economy grew by 5.6 percent annually from 1965 to 1980, the economic growth rate slowed to less than 1 percent during the 1980s; in the period 1990-1998 the gross domestic product (GDP) grew at an annual average of 2.3 percent. The GDP in 1998 was $107 billion.

Portuguese is now the third more spoken European language worldwide (after English and Spanish) ranking sixth among the world's languages in number of native speakers (over 200 million) and first in South America (186 milion, over 51% of the population).

Portugal has one of the highest penetration of mobile phones in the world and one of the highest penetration of broadband of Europe.

The euro is the form of currency used in Portugal currently the euro is the

most valuable currency around

Economy

With Portugal in the throes of financial crisis that hit the European world after it was done

ravaging the United States of America, the Chinese government has chinned up to help the

country in need. The Chinese President, Hu Jintao, claimed today, the 7th of November 2010, that the Chinese people were all for

helping the country in need but stopped short of announcing to buy the huge debts of the Iberian Country. The Portuguese had been hoping for

Hu Jintao to buy their debts and share the burden.

Although President Hu Jintao continuously mentioned the spirits of helping the country in financial distress but did not elaborate on the

measures he planned to take. The details of the deals between the two countries were also just outlined by Hu Jintao and not elaborated on. The President Hu Jintao has signed several

treaties with Portugal and hoped to double their bilateral trade by 2015.
