I have lived in Fairhope, Ala. for close to 13 years after moving from Arkansas. Both states are close to my heart.

When I was in the 5th grade, I traveled to Scotland where I first fell in love with architecture.

I studied abroad for a semester in Istanbul, where I was able to soak up the culture and also travel to Italy for a few weeks.

HELLO.WELCOME TO MY DESIGN BROCHURE.

THIS IS ME

Hi. My name is Chris Parker, and I am a recent graduate of Auburn University’s College of Architecture, Design, and Construction. I was born in Mississippi, spent half of my life in Arkansas, and the other half in Fairhope, Ala., so you could say I am a “certified Southerner.” I like sweet tea and pepper jelly, and when I order a coke, I don’t necessarily mean a Coca-Cola. Sketching, traveling, and photography are my favorite hobbies. I cherished my time in architecture school, and I have every intention of becoming licensed and designing beautiful buildings while learning from those who do the same.

THESISPROJECT

The start of my thesis project was an exploration of contrasting spaces and the tension between them, and the opportunities that arise from that space. Scale, context, and form are at the focus of some of the early drawings to the right, which were done with Prismacolor markers on trace. The drawing below is a section of a color rendering of the exterior room seen in plan and section on the next page.

final There is a difference between the first semester images and the final

drawings. In the beginning there was an exploration of contrast with context, which then led to the final drawings that expressed contrast within the building itself. A sense of antiquity is on the left while contemporary on the right, and the exterior room in the middle becomes the space where both halves are felt.

location Chicago, ILtype Children’s Hospital

This project is a dense and urban project. The focus was to create a hospital that specializes in children’s cardiatric needs, staff needs, and functionality as an actual hospital. Specific code requirements, such as occupancy loads, fire stairs, and corridor square footage, had to be upheld.

The large perspective and plan were drawn freehand. I enjoy producing hand drawings, but am also capable of digital work seen in the exploded section detail on the bottom right.

WOOD COMPETITION

The annual “wood comp” is one of the oldest competitions in our school of architecture. It is meant to challenge a second year student’s knowledge of structure, context, and cost. This particular year, the project was to be an educational space and office for the Auburn University Arboretum. The buildings are often basic in both design and concept.

This project began as a basic gable roof barn that went through a series of steps to reach its final form. The point of the gable was pulled forward, and one wall folded under to become the floor of the class room, which looks down the topography to a small creek.

Because of its educational nature, the building participates by becoming a didactic space. The structure is exposed and the water collection cisterns are kept near the building to provide teaching opportunities.

sketches

Sketching is my go-to creative outlet. I sketch to come up with ideas. I sketch to iron out old ones. I sketch to see spaces, materials, and light. If I could, I would put together a portfolio of just sketches, as I feel that most of the real work is done in that process. I am fully capable of using modern 3D modeling software, but for me, every project starts on paper. I find it the most efficient way to see and think.

photography

I enjoy photography just as I enjoy sketch-ing. It becomes another creative outlet to explore from choosing how to frame the shot or choosing how to edit in post-process. I included a couple of my favorite photos. The top two are with a vintage canon film camera on a lake outing. The bottom is a view of Istiklal, the busiest street I’ve traveled.
