My thoughts exactly. Driving is many elderly folks'last bastion of true independence, but mental facultiesdegrade sharply at that age. My grandmother on my dad's side lived to be 97, independent the entiretime. Lived in a rural farmhouse down the road my boyhood home, not a single medication taken, fullgarden tended brilliantly every year and a Sunday feast for the families of her nine children.... But,despite all that, her reaction time and focus succumb to the aging process, just like everybody else. It washeartbreaking to lose access to her 68 Plymouth Satellite 4dr, but even she agreed that she was beyondthe ability to drive without posing a danger. Luckily, my dad and i, even in our 60s and 20s respectively, were very close and provided any taxi service no questions asked. In the end? She was glad to be donewith driving. After not being behind the wheel for a few months, she readily admitted she should havestopped years ago. Please, for the sake of safety for your grandmother and the rest of the road going

population, have a talk about giving up her license. The trick is though, don't remove her ability to getaround, but provide her with a chauffer to take her out any time she needs to. Not only will she spend herfinal years riding in luxury, bit it will give you and your family a chance to spend more time with herduring the twilight of her life. Some of the best memories i possess of my late grandma Z. A were simplymaking the drive to town for groceries and whatnot and just talking about life. Some one-on-one timewith a woman whose life spanned from 1907 to the 21st century was amazing, and the stories and lifelesions i gained were way more valuable than the lack of convenience or guilt i would have avoided byignoring the driving issue. Beyond that, I'm not sure any other opportunity to spend so much personaltime with her would have ever presented itself without our regular drives to the shops and gardencenters. Do it for grandma; do it for other drivers; most importantly, do it for the time you will spendtogether... Chances to do so may be over at any moment.
