In 2003 he was appointed by Queen Elizabeth II as a Companion of Honour. A major exhibition of his work was mounted at Tate Britain, London, in 2006. Gillian Ayres Gillian Ayres was one of the few artists to actually live in Soho during the 1950s. With her fellow-artist and husband, Henry Mundy, she lived in the flat above the Artists International Association Gallery in Lisle Street.

She studied at the Camberwell School of Art where figurative art was promoted, which Ayres hated. She left in 1950, and began to paint abstracts, with her first solo exhibition coming in the mid-1950s. Ayres held a number of teaching posts through the 1960s and 1970s, becoming friends with painters such as Howard Hodgkin, Robyn Denny and Roger Hilton. In 1981 she moved to north Wales, and later to Cornwall.
