Introduction to the S-scan Display – S-scan Overview The true depth S-scan display is the primary display used in phased

array inspection for flaw characterization, volumetric location, depthand height sizing

The S-scan allows all focal laws !"-scans# for the group to $e viewed

in one display corrected for true depth or uncorrected, and

    superimposed over a weld overlay

The S-scan display interacts directly with the "-scan display through

movement of the $lue data cursor They are lin%ed together  "ll of the information availa$le in the "-scan is availa$le in the S-scan

    &othing is lost

The S-scan is necessary $ecause it is not possi$le to interpret many

    individual "-scans simultaneously

"dvantages of the uncorrected S-scan display is that it uses (66+ of the availa$le

pi.els in the window, all focal laws have the same range, and gates on this display

have the same affect as $eing in sound path

" disadvantage of the uncorrected S-scan is that it does not allow for weld overlays

and can $e difficult to orientate the data to the component without more practice ande.perience

    S-scan Display Depth Modes – #urrent $aw vs %ll $aws

8hen the S-scan *T mode is set to true depth, the interaction with the *T range

can $e set to the following two options under depth'( urrent focal law !ictured left#

2  "ll focal laws !ictured right#

8hen the depth mode is set to

current focal law, the range is

set for the current law !"-scan#

    and e.trapolated in sound path

to the rest of the laws

8hen the depth mode is set to

all focal laws, the range is set

so that all laws terminate at

the selected depth entered :ach mode has advantages

for optimum use of window for

data and how gates can $e

    S-scan Display - S-scan and %-scan Interaction Overview

The S-scan and "-scan interact directly with one another They are lin%ed

together 8hen the $lue data cursor on the S-scan scan is moved, the "-scan display

will update to the same focal law

There are 3 ways to manually manipulate the data cursor on the S-scan

    display

; Drag and drop it directly on the display with the touch screen !"lways active regardless oftouch screen mode#

; Drag and drop it with a *S< mouse !"lways active regardless of touch screen mode#

; Move it $y use of function %ey and rotary %no$ !referred method#

; Move it $y entering the angle or focal law in Menu=Measurement=ursor=ategory=Data=

     "ngle

&ormally the "-scan display displays only one "-scan "ll "-scans within thegroup can $e displayed simultaneously as a function of the data source

    e.plained later in this section

"dditionally, there is a data source option that allows auto "-scan update

$ased on gate " !7ed# data for highest amplitude or shortest time of flight

S-scan Display - S-scan Data Selector &unction 'ey In addition to dragging the data cursor on the touch screen or with a *S< mouse,

the ne.t easiest way to manipulate it is with the data selector function %ey and scroll

%no$ This is the preferred method  " short stro%e of the data selector function %ey displays and ena$les the angle

window in the upper left hand corner of the MX2 display

:.pert use of the MX2 reuires familiarity and fast interaction with the function %eys

    and scroll %no$

    *se of the function %eys

    and scroll %no$ is the

    fastest easiest way to

    perform many functions

and can $e done at any

    time without changing the

    current menu ractice

    with the function %eys is

    highly recommended
