DESCRIPTION

Page 10: MX Sprue Pickers - conairgroup.com · The MX Sprue Pickers are available in several models to suit your application needs, including telescopic models when the height of the ceiling

The MX Sprue Picker is a pneumatic robot that removes themolded part or sprue runner system from the injection mold-ing machine. Sprue pickers are mounted on a fixed platen onthe injection machine. When the mold opens, the robot armlowers into the mold area, grips the sprue or part and pivots toplace the item in a designated area. The MX Sprue Pickers are available in several models to suityour application needs, including telescopic models when theheight of the ceiling is an issue. See Specifications, page 2-6.

Conair MX Sprue Pickers are ideal for applications requiringquick, consistent sprue/part removal from either a moveable orstationary platen. The robot interfaces directly with the moldmachine to ensure predictable, constant cycle times. Thisallows accurate time quoting for production and maintenanceschedules.

Use the MX Sprue Pickers to eliminate common problems:

l inconsistent cycle times

l improper part/sprue separation

l unsafe sprue/part removal

MX Sprue Picker, CD-EM1 Control UGR007/12022-4 DESCRIPTION

The MX Sprue Picker interfaces with the mold machine. Thehand control provides the buttons for controlling and monitor-ing the sprue picker. From the hand control you can:

l monitor the input/output status

l set and adjust cycle timers in both manual and automaticmode

l adjust mode settings

l operate the picker manually

l operate the picker automatically

l store programs

The sprue picker sends a signal to the mold machine to beginthe cycle. The sprue picker receives the Mold Open signalfrom the mold machine to remove the sprue/part. The robotarm moves into the mold area, grips the part, and raises out ofthe mold. The arm pivots outside the press area to release thepart/runner. The sprue picker sends a signal to the moldmachine to begin the next cycle.

Each sprue picker is equipped with a part verification switchto stop the molding machine if a part is missed.

l A grounded power source. Check the sprue picker’sserial tag for the correct amps, voltage, phase, andcycle. All wiring should be completed by qualified per-sonnel and comply with your region’s electrical codes.

l Clearance for safe operation and maintenance. Make sure there is enough clearance around the spruepicker for movement, maintenance and servicing. Besure the sprue picker has proper clearance to avoidstructures, utilities, overhead cranes, and loading pipes,as well as other machines and equipment. Be sure thatthe maximum envelope is clearly marked and protectedfrom entry by personnel during operation. The maxi-mum envelope is the volume of space encompassingthe maximum designed movement of ALL robot parts, including the end of arm tooling, work piece andattachments.

PREPARING FORINSTALLATION

UGR007/1202 MX Sprue Picker, CD-EM1 Control INSTALLATION 3-3

CAUTION: Moving the Sprue PickerWhen you receive the sprue picker, the swing isbolted to prevent movement. On the MX60 toMX150 models, a bolt goes through the swingangle adjustment bracket into the base. Thisprevents the arm from swinging.

On the MX250 to MX450 models, there is an L-bracket between the swing casting and thebase. Leave the swing inhibitor on until thesprue picker is mounted on the press. Removeafter mounting.

WARNING: Improper installation, oper-ation, or servicing may result inequipment damage or personal injury. This equipment should only be installed, adjust-ed, and serviced by qualified technical person-nel who are familiar with the construction, oper-ation, and potential hazards of this type ofmachine.

All wiring, disconnects, and fuses should beinstalled by qualified electrical technicians inaccordance with electrical codes in your region.Always maintain a safe ground. Do not operatethe equipment at power levels other than whatis specified on the machine serial tag and dataplate.

SETTING AIRPRESSURE

The MX Sprue Picker is pneumatically driven. A filter regula-tor and an air valve adjust the air pressure. Connect the facto-ry air line to the filter regulator. Adjust the air pressure:

Pull up and turn the knob clockwise to increase the air pressure.

Pull up and turn the knob counter-clockwiseto decrease the air pressure.

Set the air pressure to 0.4-0.6 MPa (58-87 PSI) on the pressure gauge.

Push the knob down to lock it into position.

The electrical interface between the sprue picker and theinjection molding machine is the most important part of theinstallation. The interface must function correctly to maintainthe safety of the sprue picker and the mold. As a result, theinterface must be verified.

VERIFYING THEELECTRICALINTERFACE

For electrical diagramsrefer to the Appendix.

CAUTION: Equipment hazard.Do not plug an MX Sprue Picker with a PC-E IIIControl or a PC-E IV Control into an interfacewired for the CD-EM1 Control SPI interface.Damage will occur! Call Conair Service if youare unsure or have any questions.

Verifying signals from sprue picker to IMMCheck the following interface signals:

l Permit Clamp Close Signal indicates the sprue picker is in a predeter-mined safe position for the IMM clamp to close. Ifthe sprue picker is not clear of the mold area, clampclosing must be inhibited. Also, if the sprue pickermisses a part, the clamp must be inhibited fromclosing.

l Permit Clamp Motion When the sprue picker arm is in a safe area this sig-nal allows IMM clamp motion.

l Mold Ejection (Forward) The ejection of the part can be controlled by thesprue picker. This ensures the proper placement ofthe sprue picker gripper before the sprue/runner isejected.

l Robot Non-operationalThe switch contact is open when the IMM is operat-ed with the robot. The switch is closed when theIMM is operated without the robot; the PermitClamp Close, Permit Clamp Motion, andEmergency Stop are still monitored. All other sig-nals can be in an undetermined state.

l Emergency StopWhen the robot emergency stop is activated the cir-cuit opens and activates the IMM emergency stopcircuit.

Page 33: MX Sprue Pickers - conairgroup.com · The MX Sprue Pickers are available in several models to suit your application needs, including telescopic models when the height of the ceiling

Verifying signals from IMM to sprue pickerVerify the following signals as functional and correct:

l Mold Fully Open This signal indicates that the mold is in a predeter-mined fully open position. This is a very importantsignal. If the sprue picker enters, or attempts toenter, the mold at the wrong time damage to the armand/or mold can occur.

l Mold Fully Closed This signal is sent to the sprue picker when the moldis fully closed or locked up.

l Safety Gates Closed This signal tells the sprue picker that the safetygates that prevent access to robot motions areclosed.

l Fully Automatic When signal indicates the the IMM is in full auto-matic operation mode.

l Reject PartThe IMM signals the sprue picker there is a rejectedpart. The sprue picker grabs the part, strips it andimmediately releases it without moving it outside.

l Emergency StopWhen the IMM emergency stop is activated the cir-cuit opens and activates the emergency stop circuitof the sprue picker.

You can add a second descent slowdown circuit to an MXmodel sprue picker. The two valves that are part of the seconddescent slowdown circuit are the vertical valve and the swingvalve.

The second descent slowdown valve is an air actuated valve. It is actuated by the swing motion. When the swing motionswings out, the pressure used to swing the arm out energizesthe slowdown valve. When the arm descends in the swing outposition, the exhaust of the vertical is diverted through thesecond descent slowdown valve through a metering valve.

This metering valve creates a second slower speed. When the arm swings back in, the pressure to the seconddescent slowdown valve is no longer present and the air forthe vertical cylinder goes straight through the second descentslowdown valve without being metered.
