For it is here, under cover of night, that the fishermen of Taiji engage in a secret and bloody hunt that they will go to great lengths to halt anyone from seeing. O’Barry recruited a team of underwater sound and camera experts, special effects artists, marine explorers, adrenaline junkies and world-class free divers to carry out an undercover operation to photograph the off-limits cove. Matt Damon shines as the USA’s highest-ranking corporate whistle-blower in Soderbergh’s smart and funny new film. Seeing himself as something of a crusader for truth, justice and the common man, Marc Whitacre volunteers information on his compa-ny’s multi-national price fixing conspiracy to the FBI. But Whitacre has been less than candid about some of his other activities, and a series of ever more jaw-dropping revelations follow. The convoluted twists and turns of Whitacre’s imagination make it almost impossible to separate out fact from fantasy and provide dramatic and comic tension, aided by the combination of Soderbergh’s confident direction and Damon’s pitch-perfect performance.

A new Coen brothers movie is always something to look forward to, and A Serious Man turns out to be one of their very best. Larry is a good husband and father who always tries to do the fair and just thing in the face of life’s temptations and trials. But one day, everything starts to go wrong. His wife leaves him, his career as a professor is put in jeopardy and his unemployable brother is becoming more and more of a burden. Larry’s attempts to find some equilibrium and be a righteous man in the face of all these vexations is the source of a great deal of droll humour, particularly acute in his attempts to seek guidance from a succession of uninspiring or unavailable rabbis. Michael Stuhlbarg is unshowily excellent as Larry. Classic Coen brothers then, for those who enjoy a chuckle.

1961, and London is poised between post-war austerity and the swinging which has yet to start. Lower-middle-class Twickenham is a dull place, and particularly so to 16-year-old Jenny, swotting to pass her Oxbridge exam whilst dreaming of art, culture and all things sophisticated and French. These come her way sooner than expected when she meets David, a suave older man. Soon she’s enjoying a world of smoky bars and supper clubs, concerts and weekends away with David and his glamorous friends. Adapted from the memoir by journalist Lynn Barber, Nick Hornby’s script is lively and witty, and the film bubbles with an easy charm, gently engaging as its story neatly unfurls.
