MWH buildings often have a significant presence, due to their size, location or cultural

importance. The greatest challenge for the architectural team is to turn this presence into

a truly positive contribution to the environment. We harness the skills, enthusiasm and

considerable knowledge of our integrated design teams, clients and communities to create

inspirational environments which are sympathetic to their locality.

The MWH architectural team brings together a wide range of experience across a broad spectrum of sectors. We are well placed to serve existing key clients and beyond, in any aspect of their architectural requirements, from initial feasibility options appraisals through to production information on complex projects.

Architectural services at MWH are offered either as a stand-alone service or as part of an in-house, multi-disciplinary consultancy, working closely with other disciplines within the organisation to provide our clients with integrated, economic and environmentally sympathetic solutions.

MWH is a brand leading name in the water, wastewater, power and energy from waste sectors. However we have the knowledge and expertise to work across the industrial and infrastructure sectors generally, and our capability includes the whole range of ancillary buildings associated with these industries, including offices, control rooms, laboratory accommodation and visitor centres.

We use our extensive knowledge of the particular engineering and process requirements to find the optimum solution, embracing operational, technical, environmental and economic aspects of design.

Our clients include government agencies, local authorities, multinational companies and industrial companies worldwide."In-house, multi-disciplinary

consultancy working closely with other disciplines"

Peacehaven WwTW The scheme at Peacehaven is all about enclosing plant and controlling odour. Located in the setting of the South Downs National Park the scheme is buried into the landscape. The domed green roof and even the choice of grass are designed to blend in, and from ground level it looks like another hill. This contemporary concept found acceptance among the local population, and the distinctive design won a number of awards.

Marine Drive PS The eye-catching form of this pumping station on Marine Drive, Brighton makes a ‘virtue of a necessity’.Located in a sensitive position above Brighton Marina, the domed lid to the shaft, set between two free form, curving ‘berms’, integrate the architecture into the soft forms of the adjacent open spaces. The berms are topped with steel spokes, providing both a security function and a visual transition to the horizon.

Wear Valley WTW This architectural design in the Wear Valley for a water treatment works is based on a traditional style, thereby complementing its setting in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The scheme is designed to have the appearance of an Upper Weardale farmstead, complete with vernacular materials and details and dry stone walls extending out into the landscape.

Woolston WwTW The existing wastewater treatment works at Woolston is to be redeveloped as part of a major regeneration of the area. The objective is to enclose the plant, using three shell-like organic aluminium-clad structures. These forms are designed to enhance the view from the new high rise housing under development to the north and are in tune with the maritime context of a prominent location on the Southampton waterfront.

Runcorn TPS Our involvement in the energy sector includes architectural services on one of the largest thermal power plants in Europe. Located in Runcorn, the plant takes the waste from Greater Manchester and Cheshire and converts it into solid recovered fuel.

Wormingford PS This pumping station in rural Essex meets all the normal LPCB security standards and CESWI specifications within a traditional fenestration of brick and timber.Timber louvres complete the vernacular feel, variation in materials adds interest and roof glazing provides natural light to all the process areas.

Abberton PSA scheme to increase capacity at Abberton Reservoir, Essex, originally constructed in the 1930’s, included 5 new pumping stations, one of which was designed in the Art Deco style of the original. Its geometrical form and white render finish are typical of the period. Standing on a masonry promontory, the stonework walls and balustrading are also modelled in the Art Deco style.

Sulby WTW Set in a wooded glen on the Isle of Man, the massing of the buildings and construction in Manx stone with oak cladding is sympathetic to the local character. The treatment works benefit from large areas of roof glazing which flood the interior with natural light.

We approach all of our projects from a culture

that promotes close team working and innovation,

from the earliest feasibility and conceptual design stages, through to on

site construction.

Collaborative Design

Our aim is to ensure that planning approval is achieved within the project parameters, and to ensure that

build-ability is central to the design.

The use of CAD/ digital design techniques is central to the architectural team’s communication process and projects are characterised by the innovative use of technology.

Calling on a variety of 3D software applications we can model a building in all its complexity, while maintaining the facility to output to a fully compatible iModel for the purpose of clash checking, and Design Team collaboration.

Functional Design

In addition to large scale projects our services are

deployed on small scale utility buildings , including smaller

treatment works, pump houses, electrical buildings, and stores.

These come in all shapes and sizes, and utilise a

variety of different materials, according to location and

planning restrictions.

MWH work in sectors where many of the buildings are unheated, where fabric energy efficiency is a low priority and where the biggest sustainability concerns are often plant and process based. Nevertheless, there are a number of areas where we might contribute to the sustainability of a scheme from the introduction of natural lighting, to the enhancement of energy efficiency in office and welfare spaces, and the use of appropriate renewable energy technologies.

From the traditional to the contemporary, all of our buildings in the utilities sector have to meet the latest stringent security requirements, including LPCB, CPNI and SEMD. The security criteria often have to be met in the context of other concerns, including planning constraints, aesthetics, acoustics, and functionality.

Building enclosures provide a key part of security measures, and in conjunction with the client’s security specialists we ensure the requirements are embodied in our construction details and specifications

"Imaginative and appropriate design"

Architectural design has long been an important and integral aspect of MWH’s international engineering capability. We can boast of a rich architectural legacy, and some of Thomas Hawksley’s original designs - like the Bestwood Pumping Station pictured - are now listed buildings. Bestwood has found a new lease of life as a restaurant and venue for public events.

Innovation is another important facet of the company’s legacy. Hawksley’s buildings are not only beautiful, they were pioneering engineering works in their day.

The ethos of ‘imaginative and appropriate’ design still holds true of the work we do today, as demonstrated in projects such as Wear Valley, Peacehaven, and our designs for Woolston on the Southampton river front.

Our aim is to encompass the best of the past with today’s reality: imaginative ideas, pragmatic approach, intelligent solutions, successful delivery, working together...
