Challenge

The $470 million MWC dairy processing plant will serve milk processors, dairy farmers and manufacturers for decades to come. Designers considered ways to bring durability to the enormous plant, while allowing for technological advancements that will future-proof the business.

To create a dairy processing facility equipped to handle 25% of Michigan’s milk, designers needed quality building products that meet USDA guidelines and also kept construction moving.

Highlights

• The nearly 400,000-square-foot dairy processing facility is one of the most advanced of its kind, featuring miles of piping and utilities to produce 8,000,000 gallons of raw milk per day.

• The plant was designed and built over a two-year period to meet the highest standards for food processing. This includes the use of KS Shadowline and KS Shadowline Interior panels that meet USDA guidelines.

• With so many moving parts to create the plant, insulated metal panels helped to speed up the construction process.

MWC, the massive joint venture between Glanbia Nutritionals, Dairy Farmers of America, Inc. and Select Milk Processors, Inc. processes 25% of Michigan’s milk.To help create a large-scale plant quickly that meets the highest food processing standards, designers selected Kingspan’s KS Shadowline panels.

Influence:

KS Shadowline panels provide a high thermal performance, reducing operational energy costs for years to come, helping the MWC meet sustainability goals that also include reusing wastewater. The interlocking tongue-and-groove rainscreen joint provides superior thermal protection from Michigan’s harsh winters and keeps dairy processing at a steady temperature.

With the use of the top-of-the-line QuadCore® insulation core used to complete MWC, R-values reach up to 8 per inch. With employee safety top-of-mind, KS Series panels with QuadCore® have earned a Red List-Free classification and are GREENGUARD GOLD certified.

MWC is an investment in the future of Michigan’s dairy industry. Using high quality building materials and advanced technology, the plant will serve farmers and distributors for years to come.

“This is one of the best built, highest quality facilities in the dairy industry.”

George Chappell, VP of Dairy Operations, Glanbia Nutritionals

Solution:

A total of 131,500 sq. ft. of KS Shadowline and KS Shadowline Interior insulated metal panels helped meet food processing guidelines and construction timeline. KS Shadowline Interior panels are designed specifically for facilities such as MWC. The insulated metal panels have a standard finish of Imperial White siliconized modified polyester, which can withstand heavy sanitization, used in food processing plants. New technology allows for automatic equipment sanitization within the plant, along with daily cleaning shifts.

Kingspan’s KS Series panels are an all-in-one wall assembly that only requires an installer, rather than multiple trades, which can lead to scheduling delays. For a plant described as “seven buildings in one,” it was essential to stay on track throughout the construction process. Insulated metal panels were a piece of a huge puzzle that included more than 21 miles of utility piping, 2,500 light fixtures and 4.5 miles of site utilities.
