mWater overview

The mWater Explorer app is used for data collection on mobile smart phones and tablets.

The data is uploaded to an online (cloud) database. The upload requires a Wi-Fi connection or mobile data (3G or 4G) connection.

The mWater Portal is a website that allows mWater users to design survey forms for use in the Explorer app. In the Portal users can also review and analyse data uploaded from the app.

This information is also stored in the online database. Both the app and the portal access information collected through the database.

Charging the phone

• Keep your phone charged – check the battery regularly.• Use wall chargers, car chargers and block (portable battery) chargers.• Switch your phone off at the end of the work day / overnight. • Do NOT switch it off when you are in the field collecting data – if you are

offline you cannot log back in to the mWater app when you switch the phone back on. You may lose data that you have collected with the app.• Keep your phone in a secure place when you are charging it.• Try only to charge your phone when the battery is low – charging it too

Using data:

Organizations should provide enumerators with a data bundle allowance to complete their work. mWater encourages enumerators to play on Facebook in their own time. Data bundles should be adequate for this. If users consume all of this data, you must purchase extra data at your own expense.

Some apps will use more data than others:• Apps like WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger will not use much data• Apps like YouTube and Facebook (watching videos) will use lots of data• Websites where you can watch videos will use lots of data (using the Google

Chrome browser)

Android Smartphone basicsChanging the SIM card (images from Moto E Android)

For most Android mobiles, change the SIM card remove the cover from the back of the phone.

At the side of the phone opposite the power button, lightly press the side of the SIM card – it will pop out.

Gently push in the new SIM card, until you feel/hear the spring click and the SIM card is all the way in the phone, no longer visible from the outside.

Try to avoid changing the SIM card too much as it can damage both the SIM card and the phone, and allows dirt and dust to enter.
