The place we all know as Mutual Benefit Group was not always that; it was formally known as Swigart Associates. Although Mutual Benefit was founded by Robert Livingston Patterson, Swigart Associates was originally founded by W. Emmert Swigart in 1907. W. Emmert Swigart was a well-known business man, and philanthropist. He was also a graduate of Juniata College.

Today the company is a multiline property casualty insurance group with five member companies offering insurance policies covering autos, homes,

and businesses.
