Dear Friends and Members,

I am writing this on May 1st – so we have just a hair over two weeks until our 25th Annual Great Lakes Stampede. A hearty THANK YOU to everyone that helped acquire sponsors, raffle items,

and generally promoted our one big event of the year. At the same time I would remind you that we still have two weeks to secure more sponsors, more raffle items, and provide more promotion. In short…..the work is NOT DONE!! Secondly, I am sure Jack Beeler and Tom Welsh can use all our help setting up the show, working registration, parking, judging, and helping with trophy presentations. Please let Jack and Tom know if you are going to be there and where you can assist. This is our one big fundraiser of the year and so much of what we do the rest of the year depends on the success of this event. Next, please let Tom Welsh know of any shows/events you participate in during the year and what special event you participated in on the 55th anniversary of the Mustang. As for me and Dick Lebsack, we attended the Midland Business Association dinner at Midland Ford on Wednesday,

April 17, 2019. Mark Watson from Midland Ford asked for an older Mustang to be featured, and since Dick had multiple commitments that day, I offered our 1966. Mark did a great job with a wonderful meal, Mustang posters promoting the anniversary, door prizes, and special live music. There were about 150-175 people in attendance well into the evening. I need to thank Mother Nature as the rain stopped that day long enough to get Miss Scarlet to Midland. If you remember, that week we had rain four out of five days and I, as well as Mark, were getting worried as Miss Scarlet does not go out in precipitation. In any case, it was a good day to show off our beloved Mustangs and promote our club. Lastly, a special thanks to all our show and club sponsors. Many have been supporting us for years! This year, we have added two new Ford Dealer sponsors, Randy Wise Ford in Ortonville, and Mel Ervin Ford in Chesaning to our list of Ford Dealers supporting us. Thanks for joining us this year! Whether for a new/used car, insurance, service, mods/upgrades, banking, eating, or construction, please call on our sponsors first for a quote or to buy!

Drive safe and enjoy those Ponies; see you at the Stampede!

Well, we are just over one week from show day and the show is coming together very well, with all the last minute details in place.  Sign ups as of May 9th are 60 registered cars prepaid via direct payment or Pay Pal.  I am really hoping to break the 150 mark this year so we will be promoting heavy for these next several days, but as we all know, the weather around the show site on Saturday will set the tone.   Set up will be on Friday at 1:00 PM, with limited needs this year. We’ll get the tents set up, put up the pennants, plan and review parking and other placements. On show day - we need to have all MCMM members at the event grounds at  7:00 AM so that we can get our member-cars parked together and final items done for the show before the rush.  We will need

all members to assist with getting the cars in, registrations in place, and attendee vehicles parked so please report to the front greeters tent as soon as you have your car set.   We will plan on taking a member group photo at some point in the afternoon. If you ordered and received your 25th Anniversary Show T-Shirt, please wear it for the photo. If you didn’t get one yet, they are $15 and a limited number will be available at the club tent. Name tags will be available to identify you in case questions are ask during the day by attendees. Please make sure you have yours on! If you have any questions, suggestions or ideas please let Tom or I know.

We headed into FWH and visited the Ford

merchandise store and several car displays in the lobby. They included the just-announced Lincoln Corsair, a compact

crossover, and Ken Block’s Hoonigan ‘65 Mustang and

‘77 F-150. All three vehicles were incredible. Well, as mentioned earlier, the event was promoted as a coffee and donut, meet & greet event, and we certainly enjoyed every part of that. Check out the donut wall! Sorry you missed them as they were delicious! After the conversations and time spent admiring or discussing my Mustang or their Mustang, we all congregated at 12:45 around the heavily covered vehicle I mentioned earlier. While not much was actually said about it, the car was a green, 2019 Mustang EcoBoost High Performance. It was disclosed that it was rated at 330 horsepower, or about 20 more then the base EcoBoost version. The torque was about the same (350) on both models. The engine is derived from the 2.3 liter from the discontinued Focus RS. It is a package available on the EcoBoost Mustang that makes it the most powerful four-cylinder sports car offered by an American automaker. I included a rear quarter photo below and a close-up of the 2019’s emblem. The emblem has some tie-ins to the 1965-6 289 HiPo emblem you may remember as an addition to the standard 289 emblem (see inset below). I checked out the latest Ford Mustang Supercar in the new Shell V-Power Racing Team livery and I think that it looks killer. The new livery was developed in a joint effort

HORSIN’ AROUND! MAY, 2019Nat’l Mustang Day ’19between the Shell V-Power Racing Team, Ford Performance, and Ford’s Asia-Pacific design studio. The team will aim to defend their 2018 Supercars Championship title down under, in Australia. The car will be driven by defending champion Scott McLaughlin and Fabian Coulthard throughout the 2019 Virgin Australia Supercars Championship season. The team previously raced the retired Ford Falcon. The red and yellow #22 should look familiar if you watch NASCAR races as this is Joey Logano’s new for 2019 steed. He’s been right up front, too, along with lots of other Mustangs. The Blue Mustang on the display is the Shelby GT350 which always gets lots of close looks, while the Red one is the new Shelby GT500. There were a couple of these GT’s driven in by attendees during the event, including the orange GT500 joined by a 2012 Mustang Boss 302 Laguna Seca. The Ford version of the National Mustang Day 04.17 sticker seen here will be available in limited numbers to members at the next membership meeting. Ask me for yours! All in all, it was a terrific way to celebrate the Mustang’s 55th Anniversary!

A few more photos from the event. Top right is the RTR Mustang in bright red. Bottom left, is it a Mustang or a Ford GT? The tail lights do work well in the new Mustang, too. At bottom right is Ken Block’s 1965 Hoonigan Mustang. Top left, well, it’s hard to beat having your Mustang parked in front of Ford World Headquarters with other great Mustangs. Center, news crews and photographers take in Alan Macdonalds’s Black fox body among many others.

Chairman, Jack Beeler (with lots of help from Judi, I’m sure), has the show ready to roll out. We hope we can count on your support to make our attendees feel welcome and let them

know how much we appreciate their support. With all the multitude of shows, cruise-ins and other car-related events throughout the spring, summer and fall, choosing to go to our show is a big deal to all of us. I would like to “invite” past members to return and to ask all members to make time to attend and help out in some way. We have quite a few members that are unable to attend the monthly meetings so I’m hoping that you will make the time to come and help. Give Jack a call this week, if you haven’t already signed up so he can pencil you in.

We are still on hold with the new Ford Performance web site as I write this. I had a lengthy conversation at the National Mustang Day event with the Ford Performance team leader, Trenton Zeislet. We reviewed the status of the project and he assured me that the project is moving forward and we are the first club that will go live. In his last update on May 1st, he noted that they have completed the “refresh” and are currently

working on the domain names and going life with the sites. Our club, he notes, is the first on the list to receive the template. He expects the live rollouts should be in the next week or two, meaning around this or next week. I’ve asked for an update to present at the May 20th meeting. Having “been there” myself with projects of my own on MANY occasions, I know that these projects have to be checked and double checked, especially with the Ford Performance and the Ford Motor Company name on them. Henry would want it that way, wouldn’t he?

I’ve been a member of the MCA for quite some time, and enjoyed the club and the Mustang Times magazine that is part of the $50 membership. Last year, I changed to the digital version at $35, but found that I hardly logged in to read it. So now I’ve rejoined for a five-year renewal at the non-digital, non-hard copy rate. Being in semi-retirement, I’m beginning to see why so many retirees say they are busier after retirement than when they worked! I guess I should have known, eh?

I hope - no, I expect - to see you at the show, and hope to then see you at our next meeting, on May 20th, to talk about the show.

The 14th Annual Freeland Walleye Festival Car, Bike & Truck Show was held at the McDonald Ford / Quick Lane parking lot in Freeland on Saturday, April 27th. The event was quite well attended, with about 90 to 100 vehicles present, including a strong showing by our own MCMM members. There were plenty of award classes, including Best of Show, People’s Choice, and a Veterans award, along with a couple of 50/50 drawings and raffles. The only (known) MCMM member gaining an award was a third place by Tom Welsh. Editorializing, an issue was the awards presentation which turned out to be a bit of a bust. This part of the show was very poorly organized this year with lots of gaps in the announcements and the only identification was by car number; no names or vehicles were called out making it impossible to know what vehicle or attendee won an award. Since several of our members left early, it was impossible to know if any more members picked up awards as many “car numbers” didn’t come up to pick up their award. Hopefully this will be rectified for 2020. The venue is excellent at McDonald Ford and we

love to support one of our longest running sponsors and as such, the event is considered an MCMM-supported car show.

It’s a lot of fun to travel in a caravan and show off the power of our Mustangs as a group, plus we get to arrive together, and, where available, to park together. If you are planning to attend a Mustang Club of America National Car Show, such as the June 28-30 Northern Star National MCA Mustang Show in Bloomington, MN, contact Quinten Levitte or Stan Bentley. They can give you lots of tips on what to look for and how to plan for one of the MCA shows. They also often attend one of the closer MCA shows, and would welcome you to travel along with them. As with the shows in Michigan, it’s a lot more fun traveling in a group. Go to www.Mustang.org for more info on the MCA shows.
