Before you lies my Portfolio, A symbolic title which can be read in one or two words. Besides the usual portfolio information it accentuates the essence of [my] architecture form. Form that follows but can also be leading, archetypical or atypical, form arising from the mass or from the void. In any case, a form that is clear and understandable. In my projects I am always looking for a powerful simplicity, natural elements that primarily result from studying and [re]defining the program, instead of merely facilitating it. Therefore in my eyes design and research reinforce each other and my presented projects show my interpretation of this.

Bergeron Centre for Engineering Excellence at York University, Toronto, Canada (Flynn Canada). 2014 - 2015

Project Coordinator

The Bergeron Centre, known for its unique architectural design, is heightening the learning experience of students at the Lassonde School of Engineering by fostering creativity and emphasizing a hands-on approach

The project worth total of $115 million, the 169,500-sq-ft centre with five floors and a green rooftop boasts a façade of 8,000 triangular metal panels and windows in a mathematically derived Penrose pattern that never repeats. The design drew its inspiration from Georgian Bay and the iconic Canadian image of a cloud floating over a rock.

The building substrate framing is designed with the complex geometry of the rainscreen system in mind. A modular pre-framed structural unit was developed through a highly coordinated BIM information exchange process which resulted in custom support collar detailing at window openings. As part of Flynn Canada in the role of Project Manager, my team successfully designed a system of extrusion, sub girts and panels. After comprehensive analysis of the geometry of the building, my team and I created a unique two-piece girt system to provide concealed attachment for the ACP panels, and a method to allow for up to 1” of tolerance within the wall assembly through reveal gaps in the cladding. Flynn was responsible for the design and installation of the building envelope including: coordination of the rain screen, ACP panels, punch windows, and green roof.

My job: Responsible for execution and delivery of the complete building envelope, including: curtain-walls, punch windows, siding, ACP panels, and green roofing. Responsible for the drafting design, document control, issuance of project proposals, RFP’s, tenders, budgets, estimating, bill of materials, cash flows, preliminary schedules execution, and delivery the building. Also responsible for safety supervision, site project measurements.Working on the conceptual designing and coordinate with BIM service providers and subcontractors. Work closely with site superintendent to minimize their need to do task work. Proactively, identify, address and resolve issues and problems as or before they occur. Provide assistance to ensure project health, safety and environmental standards meet legislated requirements and company policy. Coordinate shop drawing approval. Assist with updating, maintaining and distributing documents to field general contractor and subcontractors. Assist to maintain all control logs (RFIs, shop drawings, as‐builts, etc.). Update the project budget and cost reports during construction. Responsible for safety supervision.

Hospital in downtown Toronto. The hospital communicates its purpose through a bold L-shape building and a strong street presence in the new “welcome box” pavilion, glazed vibrant pink at the second level to further identify the hospital’s mission. Black & McDonald's scope of work includes all procurement, installation, testing and commissioning for the mechanical, HVAC, sheet metal, electrical and communications systems within the facility.

My part in this project was to design all Mechanical, Electoral, HVAC and Plumbing drawings from 2D Auto-Cad to 3D Revit and NavisWorks. And to detect and solve all crashes in the building through BIM system. Due to my experience in construction designing, it was easy for me to understand the structural element of the building and design all mechanical, plumbing and electoral elements in the building.

This project was a 20th-century small ranch-style house. The owner requested no changes to the north/front façade. The extension of the building was designed on the south/back elevation.

In order to keep the north/front façade intact, the south/back façade was stripped to make room for the new living room, master bedroom, and kitchen. Additional windows were added into the design on the back façade to allow for natural light throughout the home and as a unique design element. I created a concept design, schematic design, and the design development. Additionally, I established both Revit 3D and CAD standard drawings for the existing building and addition, adjusted the design to OBC, created working drawings, field review, site project measurements, and worked on space planning all in coordination with the client.

The project entailed the design of a new living room, a master bedroom with walk-in closet, a spare bedroom, 2 bathrooms, kitchen, laundry room, and redesign of the existing basement. The first step was to create a logical and functional new layout within the limits of the existing bearing walls.

The District of Tomorrow is an innovative program in

which educational institutions, researchers, businesses, and public authorities join together to create an exciting environment for the transition to a sustainable built environment at the European Science and Business Park Avantis in Heerlen/Aachen. Avantis is the site where The District of Tomorrow is actually being created. This pioneering concept involves designing, studying, and testing sustainable technologies so that they can be utilized "tomorrow" in towns, neighbourhoods, and buildings within the Meuse-Rhine Euregion. The project began in 2006 when the directors of the building and technology faculties announced their aim of setting up a "Research and Innovation Centre for Building and New Energy" at the Avantis Cross border business park. The aim of the Centre is to give students a learning and research environment for new building techniques, with the emphasis being on sustainability.

As the final project of the undergraduate program in Architecture & Construction at Zuyd University, the Zero- Energy Home was part of bigger project: The District of Tomorrow. The primary objective was to create a residential home that would be sustainable and zero- energy, as well as, being a flexible living space that with time could be easily modified to correspond to the ever-changing demands of its residents.

Page 19: Mustafa Hafizi Portfolio 2016

This project combined my design curriculum with the

sustainable and environmental technology coursethrough University of Zuyd and University of Dalft the Netherlands, requiring not only a thoughtful and rigorous design, but also a series of renewable energy technology sections and details to ensure that my design was both feasible and structurally sound. The overall design reflected the cradle to cradle ideology through use of a Lego wall system and is 99% reliable on nature.

Zero- Energy Home withFlexible Living SpaceIndividual Design Project

The wall system which I designed made it possible for residents, through simple modifications, to actually increase or decrease the actual square footage of their household to reflect the needs of their family at the present. By sustainable design, the water and energy consumption are minimized. Internal cycles are optimized by integrating renewable energy within the district. This project illustrates how it possible to construct complete urban areas within sustainable energy requirements such as those within The District of Tomorrow and this Zero- Energy Home blueprint.

Office BuildingIndividual Design Project

My design consisted of underground

parking, three floors consisted of offices/work spaces, and a cafeteria on the top level. These hand drafted drawings were created to accompany my design building. They illustrate wall assemblies and various construction details. This project was based on an earlier design assignment where I was required to create a one-building structure.

Orbis Medical Park Hospital Sittard, the NetherlandsSite ManagerInternship & work

Research: The aim of this project was to study a practical and tangible issue that occurs often during construction and determine a solution. My work centered around deviations and tolerance in the building structure. During the constriction of OrbisAtrium, I discovered deviation and tolerance by ellipse X, Y, and ellipse associated with bridges in the building elements. These components in the Atrium of the hospital are the unique features of the Maasland Hospital.

My job: Responsible for complete development and construction of second floor (Technical & Installation units), for execution and delivery of fifth and sixth floors (high-tech operation rooms), and seventh and eighth floors (patient rooms). Also responsible for safety supervision.

New Concept: This project was not just about the construction of new buildings. Key innovations include the absence of private consulting rooms for doctors, who work in Orbis’s ‘knowledge and expertise centre’, where they have access to patients’ dossiers stored on computers throughout the building. All patients have private rooms with divans for overnight use by family members ( design function of Orbis Hospital points out the dual function of helping patients and taking part of the burden off the nursing staff), sliding glass doors (for facilitating regular checks by staff) and curtains (for privacy). The main functional idea of Orbisemphasizes that this hospital is considered a ‘meeting place’, where the ‘patient is the owner of the facility during the meeting. That means the doctor visits the patient instead of the patient the doctor.’ The Hospital of the Future, another name for the Orbis Medical Park, comprises six centres, of which four are devoted to patients and one, the Logistics Centre, handles goods and supplies. Patients, staff and supplies converge only where necessary, a set-up that eliminates time-consuming walks and searches.
