“MUSLIM VISITORS GUIDE TO HONG KONG” By Halal in Hong Kong

(Last Updated: April 5, 2017)

QIBLA IN HONG KONG: To pray, point your compass in your phone towards 270 degrees. That’s the Qibla direction for HK. Also, there's a multi-faith prayer hall at the airport in the departure hall in Terminal one, at the far right hand corner. If you need to reach your gate early, there's a multi-faith prayer hall near the gate opposite "Gate 41" at the airport as well. PRAYERS: If you are going to be in Hong Kong for less than 15 days, you are categorised a traveller. Therefore, your prayers (if you are a Hanafee) will be shortened as follows: FAJAR: 2 units Sunnat-e-Muakkida + 2 units Fard ZOHOR: 2 units Fard ASAR: 2 units Fard MAGHRIB: 3 units Fard + 2 units Sunnat-e-Muakkida ISHA: 2 units Fard + 3 units Witr Wajib JUMU’AH: Both Men and Women are welcomed at Masjids in Hong Kong (especially Kowloon Mosque (九龍清真寺) in Tsim Sha Tsui (TST) - (尖沙嘴) & Masjid Ammar Wan Chai - (灣仔清真寺) where there are Wudhu and prayer room facilities for both men and women - for all prayers including Jumu’ah (Friday Prayers). There are however, very limited facilities for women in other Masjids in HK. To help you plan your Friday, there’s a short lecture at 12:50pm, followed by Adhan at 1:10pm, followed by Khutba (in Arabic) at 1:15pm and Prayer at 1:25pm. The prayer usually ends by 1:30pm – so try to reach the Masjid before 12:50pm-130pm.

HOTELS & MASJIDS: While there are over 200 hotels across Hong Kong, the best hotels to stay at are those in the Tsim Sha Tsui (TST) - (尖沙嘴) or Wan Chai (灣仔) districts. These are both shopping & popular tourism districts and incidentally, a number of halal restaurants are located in these two districts. At the time of writing, there are no more than 40-50 certified halal venues in Hong Kong, 50% of these are located in these two districts alone. In addition, two of Hong Kong’s largest Masjids are also located in these districts i.e.: Kowloon Mosque (九龍清真寺) (T: 2724 0095), located on 105 Nathan Road, Tsim Sha Tsui. (105 彌敦道, 尖沙嘴) (Tsim Sha Tsui MTR Train Exit A) Masjid Ammar (灣仔清真寺) (T: 2575 2218), located on 40 Oi Kwan Road, Wan Chai (40 愛群道, 灣仔) (Wan Chai MTR Train Exit A3). In Tsim Sha Tsui (尖沙嘴) & Jordan (佐敦) , some of the mid-range hotels - highly convenient in terms of walking distance to MTR train stops, halal restaurants as well as hotels that are clean and “family-suitable” and close to the Masjid in terms of walking distance are: Approx. US$110-$140 per night: (1) Standford Hillview Hotel, TST; (2) Empire Hotel, TST; (3) BP International, TST; (4) Kimberley Hotel TST; (5) Best Western Grand Hotel, TST; (6) Kowloon Hotel, TST; (7) Park Hotel, TST. There are other cheaper hotels/hostels but as long as you keep your options within the “Tsim Sha Tsui” (尖沙嘴) or “Jordan” (佐敦) districts, you will find yourself close to a very happening part of town in terms of key tourist attractions, halal dining options, transportation connectivity, entertainment/leisure options and Masjid. In Wan Chai (灣仔) & Causeway Bay (銅鑼灣) , some of the mid-range hotels highly convenient in terms of walking distance to MTR train stops, halal restaurants as well as hotels that are clean and “family-suitable” and close to the Masjid in terms of walking distance are: Approx. US$110-$140 per night: (1) Charterhouse, Wanchai (2) Hotel Bonaparte by Rhombus, Wan Chai; (3) South Pacific Hotel, Wan Chai; (4) Cosmo Hotel, Wan Chai; (5) Empire Hotel, Wan Chai; (6) Metropark Hotel, Wan Chai; (7) The Fleming, Wan Chai; (8) Walden Hotel, Wan Chai.

3

There are of course many other cheaper hotels but it is best to avoid hotels near “100-200 Lockhart Road Wan Chai” if you are traveling with the family. As long as you keep your options within “Wan Chai” (灣仔 ) and “Causeway Bay” (銅鑼灣) districts, you will find yourself close to a very happening part of town in terms of key tourist attractions, halal dining options, transportation connectivity, entertainment/leisure options and Masjid. SPECIAL TIP: To get the best hotel rates in Asia let alone Hong Kong, visit www.asiatravel.com to get an idea what options you have and if your preferred travel agent can offer a better rate, go with your travel agent but if they can’t, book through this award winning Singapore-based travel website. In most (not all) cases, payments are only made directly to the hotel when you check-in so this option is very safe. Alternatively, should you require a bilingual (English/Cantonese speaking) Muslim travel agent in HK for travel bookings beyond Hong Kong, China and the rest of Asia, email Sister Amina at [email protected]

4

OTHER MASJIDS & MUST-SEE TOURISM SITES: There are 3 other large Masjids throughout Hong Kong and two of these are not necessarily located in the so-called “typical tourism districts” but one Masjid (Jamia Masjid in Central) is located very close to key tourist attractions of Hong Kong. THE 3 MASJIDS ARE AS FOLLOWS: (I) Jamia Masjid (些利街清真寺). (T: 2523 7743) - located at 30 Shelly Street in Mid Levels (30些利街中環半山區) , along the longest outdoor covered escalator system in the world, and elevates over 135 metres from bottom-to-top. The view from the top of the Central-Mid-Levels escalator is Subhan-Allah…. one to behold therefore make sure you take the time out to visit this Masjid, at least for a few minutes, that was built in 1840s (Note: British rule in HK started in 1841-1997) and is the oldest Masjid in Hong Kong. Also, this Masjid is located close to the central business/financial (CBD) district of Hong Kong, “Soho” (蘇豪) the dining district, The HK Zoo (香港動物園) - (entrance “Albany Road) - (雅賓利道) The Peak Tram (山頂纜車) , Star Ferry Central (中環天星小輪) , etc., therefore it only makes sense to visit this Masjid while you are here. Keep reading to plan your trip to this exciting district: When you decide to visit the Peak, it is best to go in the morning and take bus “15C” at the Central Bus Terminus (Near Star Ferry coming from Tsim Sha Tsui Pier 8) to the Peak for a different experience although you could take the Peak tram to the Peak as well. On your way down from the Peak however, make sure you take the Peak Tram and try Insha-Allah… to sit at the front row to maximise this Subhan-Allah… amazing experience. Once the tram reaches the last stop i.e., St John’s Building, cross the road over to St. John’s Cathedral (聖約翰座堂), and take bus “23”, get off 5-minutes later at the Admiralty MTR train station (金鐘地鐵站) and you will be at your destination much sooner than by taxi where there is the risk of getting stuck in the rush hour traffic. (Note: FYI, this bus actually goes to both Wan Chai and Causeway Bay so if you are heading there, stay put on the bus). Alternatively if you have time to visit the Central-Mid-Levels escalator and the Jamia Masjid (些利街清真寺) alongside it, walk downhill to the HQ of HSBC main building (10-mins walk) and take a tram ride (get off 1-stop later) and walk over to “100 Queens Road Central”(100 皇后大道中) and take the escalator up (15mins) and beyond.

5

If however you decide to take a taxi from St. John’s Building, tell the driver: “Mosque Street” (摩羅廟街) , get off at Pacific Coffee Shop and you will know where to go ALTHOUGH IT WILL BE MUCH MORE ENJOYABLE IF YOU DECIDE TO TAKE THE AMAZING CENTRAL-MID-LEVELS ESCALATOR UP. While there aren’t that many Halal-dining options in this district, there are a few (mostly Indian or Middle Eastern) restaurants nearby. However, this whole area is definitely worth a visit. Besides, if you haven’t visited the Central CBD area, you haven’t really seen the real HK! (II) Stanley Mosque (T: 2813 7377) in Stanley, is technically located inside the compound of Stanley Prison (赤柱監獄) (yes prison - but this Masjid is open to ordinary people as well as tourists - however take note that there are limited prayer facilities for women at this Masjid. Stanley meanwhile is a hugely popular area among tourists and locals. It is also only just over 40-minutes away by bus from Central, the financial business district, (or 20 minutes from Wan Chai). It has some of the most Subhan-Allah... beautiful beaches in Hong Kong a tourist-friendly night market and a number of restaurants (at the time of writing in June 2013 all non-halal) surrounded by stunning scenery and landscape that will make you question whether you are still in Hong Kong. It can be unbelievably beautiful and relaxing. There is also Repulse Bay (淺水灣) , which is yet another popular tourist stop on the way into Stanley (赤柱) . Since a lot of wealthy individuals working in Central (中環) and other nearby districts live in Repulse Bay/Stanley, avoid going into Repulse Bay/Stanley at 8am-9am or leaving at 5-7pm as traffic conditions can get quite bad. The 4 options of traveling INTO Repulse Bay/Stanley are: (1) From Central (中環) : The best way to visit Stanley/Repulse Bay is to catch the bus 6, 6A, 6X, 66 or 260 (40mins) from Exchange Square, Central bus terminus - (交易廣場中環巴士總站) (near MTR Hong Kong Station, (地鐵香港站 - Exit D) or quite simply, take a taxi. (2) From Wan Chai/Causeway Bay: Take the minibus “40” near Tang Lung Street, Times Square, Causeway Bay (銅鑼灣時代廣場燈籠街) (20mins); (3) From Tsim Sha Tsui: Bus “973” (80mins) from Tsim Sha Tsui East (尖沙咀東) from inside Concordia Plaza (康宏廣場) ; or

6

(4) Simply take a Taxi - which will cost approximately US$13 from Central (中環) - or US$25 from Kowloon. (V) A smart way of making the most of your day at Repulse Bay/Stanley at the end of your visit is to take the “16M green minibus” from Stanley and head straight to Chai Wan MTR train station (柴灣地鐵站) - (exit C) via the Tai Tam reservoir - (大潭水塘) for stunning Subhan-Allah..., views locals take for granted and tourist know little about. It’s a 20-minute journey and worth every cent of the shockingly cheap US$1.3 fare per passenger. Once in Chai Wan, you can consider making your way to the (III) Chai Wan Mosque (T: 2556 5507 or 923 89764), in Cape Collison (哥連臣角) Chai Wan (15 minutes away) – Again, there are no prayer facilities for women at this Masjid - or take the MTR train and head straight back to your hotel or to Wan Chai (20 minutes by train) or Tsim Sha Tsui (30 minutes by train) where there are a number of Halal restaurants. If you are not in a hurry, take the Chai Wan MTR train and get off two stops later at Shau Kei Wan MTR (筲箕灣地鐵站) Get out through the “B1” exit and hop onto the Tram (電車) - operates from 5am-midnight daily - and enjoy the slow, yet amazing Subhan-Allah..., 40-minute journey to Wan Chai or 1-hour journey to Central. In the evenings on the tram, you will get to see a very different side of Hong Kong no taxi, bus, or other modes of transport can offer. NOTE: Every taxi needs to run by the meter in HK and most do. If you come across a dishonest driver, please write down the (1) Vehicle registration number of the taxi; (2) name of driver; (3) date and time of incident; (4) your name and email address and send a short letter to: [email protected] and the authorities will take action against him/her.

12 THINGS YOU “MUST DO” IF VISITING ONLY FOR A SHORT PERIOD:

(1) Star Ferry ride between Tsim Sha Tsui - Central; (2) Mid-Levels Escalator in Central; (3) Peak Tram ride especially the ride down from the Peak; (4) Travel by tram from Central to Wan Chai or Causeway - or further out; (5) Try Halal dim sum at the Wan Chai Masjid Ammar, 6/Floor; (6) Wan Chai Central Plaza, 63/Floor for a free 360-degree view of HK; (7) 1-full day for Ocean Park Amusement Park (海洋公園) (Adult US$36-$18 Child) for some real fun for both, adults and children and if you have to, 1-day for Disneyland (迪士尼樂園) (Adult US$54-$41 Child); (8) Ladies Market (旺角女人街) after 3pm-midnight (Tung Choi St – Mong Kok MTR Exit “E2”); (9) While there are a number of beaches in HK, the best ones are Stanley, Repulse Bay or even better ones include Big Wave Bay (大浪灣) & Shek O (石澳) ; (10) 101st Floor of ICC (www.sky100.com.hk) in Kowloon for a even amazing Subhan-Allah…. view of Hong Kong unlike anything else you may have ever experienced; (11) If you only have time for one mall, go to Tung Chung Citygate Outlet Mall (Tung Chung MTR) for heavily discounted prices of original branded items; & (12) Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car “glass-bottom” ride to the Big Buddha in Tung Chung (Tung Chung MTR). The best part of visiting the Big Buddha is maybe not the site itself but the amazing cable car ride to it. NOTE: If however you have more time in Hong Kong, visit: www.discoverhongkong.com for more tour options. Meantime, as a minimum, you ought to Insha-Allah…. cover the 12 items above.

FAMILY FUN ACTIVITIES: Rent a Paddleboat at a disused reservoir: Wong Nai Chung Reservoir Park, Tai Tam Reservoir. Don’t forget to bring small amounts of bread to attract fish in the reservoir. Sideways Driving Club (2523 0983): LG/Floor, 1-2 Chancery Lane, Central (1-2 贊善里中環) .1 This place is slightly expensive but worth it. It uses simulators and software used by Formula 1 drivers for training so the experience can seem as real as they come. Artjamming (2541 8816): 123 Wellington Street, Central (123威靈頓街中環) . This place is open 6-days a week except Mondays. Call and make a booking, turn up on time with the family (children preferably age 10 or above) and you will each be given a canvas and unlimited paint. Its quality fun with the family. Ice-skating at Elements Mall (方元購物中心) (Kowloon MTR Station); or The Festival Walk Mall (Kowloon Tong - 九龍塘) MTR Station); or Cityplaza (Taikoo Shing- 太古城城市廣場 - MTR Station). Open-Top Bus Tours: Big Bus Tours (2167-8995) or Rickshawbus (2136 8888) are two great options and they run several itineraries (hop on and off) across Hong Kong. If travelling with children especially between the ages 3-10, take them to the amazing Science Museum (科學館) (2732 3232) on a weekday when everyone else is at school. It is located next to the HK Museum of History. HK Museum of History (香港歷史博物館) (2724 9042): 100 Chatham Road South, Tsim Sha Tsui. This is one of two most interesting interactive museums in Hong Kong. Harbour Cruise – Bauhinia (洋紫荊維港游輪) at North Point (East) Ferry Pier (北角東碼頭 ) . In April 2013, they were awarded Halal certification in Hong Kong and dinner cruise reservations can be made online via www.cruise.com.hk or by email [email protected] or you could call 2802 2886.

TRANSPORT & COMMUNICATION: Hong Kong is a nocturnal city and MTR trains run from 6am-midnight. Taxis are aplenty at any time of the night. Therefore do not worry about getting stranded. There is always an option in Hong Kong Insha-Allah…. To get a local HK mobile number, walk into any “7-11” or “Circle K” convenient stores and buy a prepaid SIM card (預付的 sim 卡) . There are over a thousand of these convenience stores all over Hong Kong so you will have no trouble finding it. It is also very easy to reload/top-up.

The best way to tour in Hong Kong is to get yourself and each member of your family an individual Octopus card (八達通卡) . It is the size and weight of an ordinary bank credit card. These can be bought from any counter at any MTR train stations in Hong Kong. For children age 3-11, you need to pay a deposit of HK$50(US$7) and store up to between US$3-US$60 at any given time. For adults, you also need to pay HK$50 (US$7) and store up to anywhere between US$13-US$130 at any given time. These cards can be used on MTR, buses, ferries, minibuses, peak tram, supermarkets, bookstores, cinemas, convenience stores, car parks, theme parks, hospitals, fast-food outlets, etc., Therefore, this is a very convenient and easy-to-use payment option. Also, you can quite easily top-up the value on your Octopus card (e.g., at 7-11, Circle K, Supermarkets, etc.,) so all the more reason to get it. HEALTH & EMERGENCY: In case of emergency (ambulance or police), simply call “999” Should you wish to opt for a private doctor, it is best to consider Human Health (www.humanhealth.com.hk) or Quality Healthcare (www.qhms.com). These two clinics have a wide network of clinics across Hong Kong and by visiting their website, you will Insh-Allah… be able to find the clinic closest to your hotel. For a simple doctor visit, it could cost no more than HK$350 (US$45) including medications, or less. Clinics usually open from 830am-7pm. In the unfortunate circumstance of death in the family while visiting Hong Kong, please call brother Jauher Ali at 2575 2967 (24-hours) or on his mobile 9348 4715 and he will explain what needs to be done either to repatriate the body back to your hometown/country or arrange for immediate funeral in HK.

11

HALAL FOOD: Should you decide to eat at a Chinese or Thai restaurant limiting yourself to seafood and vegetarian dishes only, be warned that the local Chinese in Hong Kong tend to add “pork floss” on top of a number of dishes as a top garnish. Therefore, when ordering food, clarify and re-emphasise on “no pork floss (不要豬肉) Also, in a number of restaurants, cooks sometimes prefer to sprinkle or marinate seafood with a hint of alcohol to enhance its flavor therefore, when ordering seafood, clarify and re-emphasise “make sure there’s no alcohol in seafood. (海鮮裡面不要放酒) There’s also no way of knowing what they were cooking using the same utensils in the kitchen before they started cooking for you so best to avoid non-halal restaurants. Finally, at 7-11, Circle K, supermarkets, pastries and cake shops, read the ingredients label carefully to ensure the item does not contain any gelatin i.e., animal fat. While there is a document attached to this file with a list of Halal restaurants in Hong Kong (it may not be the most updated). To obtain the latest, most updated version, it is best to visit www.discoverhongkong.com, followed by “dine & drink”, followed by “what to eat”, followed by “special diets”, followed by “certified halal food outlets”, and download that list.

NOTE: Please note that there are a large number of restaurants in Chung King Mansion, Tsim Sha Tsui that claim to be Halal. Most of them do not have the proper Halal certification but as long as they are run by Muslims i.e., South Indian Muslims or Pakistanis, its safe even though they may not have the Halal certificate but note there are a number of "Indian restaurants run by Sikhs. Please avoid them, no matter how hungry you are. There are plenty of other safe options in Chung King.

12

ALLERGIES Should you or any of your family member require a special diet as a result of skin allergies, there are two supermarkets that specialises in gluten-free, wheat-free, diary free, etc., products.

Handling of inbound traveller complaints

(Note: This form is for general complaints only. For complaints about refunds, please download the

Complaint Form for Refunds from the TIC website and send the completed form back to the TIC

Executive Office by post or by fax.)

I. Preamble

With a view to improving the service standard of Hong Kong’s receiving agents and protecting

the interests of inbound travellers, the Travel Industry Council of Hong Kong (TIC) has set up

the Inbound Department and two committees to handle complaints lodged by inbound

travellers.

II. Scope of complaints to be handled

1. The travel agent being complained about shall be a member of the TIC.

2. The complaint shall be related to the travel services provided by the member agent.

3. The complaint shall be lodged with the TIC within 30 days from the date of the incident.

4. The complainant shall be directly involved in the case.

5. The complaint case shall not be under legal proceedings.

III. Points to note when lodging a complaint

1. Inbound travellers shall provide the following information when lodging a complaint with

the TIC:

(i) the name, the address or contact number in Hong Kong, the date of departure, and

the correspondence address/telephone number/fax number/email address of the

complainant in his/her place of residence;

(ii) the name, the address and the telephone number of the member agent concerned;

(iii) information about the travel services being complained about (e.g. the tour name,

date of arrival, name and contact number of the tour guide, etc.)

(iv) details of the case; and

(v) the settlement requested. If compensation is demanded, justification should be given

and relevant supporting documents provided (e.g. a copy of the tour itinerary, the

receipt issued by the overseas/mainland China travel agent, etc.).

2. The complainant may write a complaint letter or complete the complaint form provided

by the TIC, which should be submitted with a copy of the receipts and other relevant

documents (e.g. the tour itinerary) to the TIC by post, by fax (3475-0650), by email

([email protected]) or in person. The complainant may request that the complaint form be

sent to him/her by fax or by post, or download it from the TIC website at www.tichk.org,

where an online complaint form may be completed.

3. If assistance is needed for completion of the complaint form, the complainant should first

have the information and documents specified in paragraph 1 ready. The details of the

complaint mentioned by the complainant will be recorded for completion of the complaint

form by staff of the TIC Executive Office. The completed complaint form will be sent

within seven working days by fax or by post to the complainant, who needs to sign it to

confirm the details of the complaint before the TIC begins to handle the complaint.

4. If the complainant files a complaint with the TIC while he/she is in Hong Kong, he/she

should have the information and the relevant documents mentioned in paragraph 1 ready

in order for staff of the TIC Executive Office to offer immediate assistance and take

follow-up actions.

5. If the complainant authorises others to lodge a complaint, an authorisation letter is

required.

6. For the sake of fairness, if the complaint case is referred to the relevant Committee for

consideration, the complainant and the parties concerned shall not attempt to contact or

influence members of the Committee before or after the meeting at which the case is

considered; otherwise, the TIC will stop handling the case.

IV. Complaint handling procedures of the TIC Executive Office

1. If a complaint is filed with the TIC by the complainant while he/she is in Hong Kong, the

TIC Executive Office will mediate between the complainant and the travel agent

concerned for a settlement in the hope that the complaint can be resolved before the

complainant leaves Hong Kong. If the complainant cannot reach a settlement with the

travel agent, he/she may request the TIC Executive Office to continue to follow up the

case after he/she leaves Hong Kong.

2. If a complaint is filed with the TIC in writing via letter, fax or email by the complainant

after he/she has left Hong Kong, the TIC Executive Office will verify all the information

provided and notify the complainant within three working days whether the case is

accepted. If it is accepted, the TIC Executive Office will look into it, and write to the

travel agent, tourist guide and registered shop concerned asking them to provide a written

explanation each within 21 days. The TIC Executive Office will then send the written

explanations to the complainant, and try to help the parties concerned to reach a

settlement.

3. If the travel agent or tourist guide concerned is suspected of violating TIC rules, or if the

registered shop concerned is suspected of violating its own pledges made to the TIC, then

the case will be referred to the Compliance Committee or the Committee on

Shopping-related Practices of the TIC for deliberation. If the committees, which have at

least 50% non-trade members, decide that there is a breach of TIC rules or a violation of

pledges, the travel agent, tourist guide or registered shop will be disciplined, and the name

of the travel agent and the registered shop concerned, together with the rules or pledges

violated, will be posted on the TIC website.
