Men’s Soccer

Head Coach

Coach Ben Ritsema enters his third season as the head coach of the Muskegon Community College men’s soccer program. He has led the Jayhawks to an impressive 22-16-2 overall record in the program’s first two seasons. Coach Ritsema’s Jayhawks ended last season with a 4th place finish in the Region XII standings and a 3rd place finish in the Michigan Community Col-lege Athletic Association. The Jayhawks were nationally ranked twice this past season with the highest ranking of #14 in the NSCAA NJCAA men’s soccer coaches poll. He coached three players to NJCAA First Team All-Re-gion XII status and three players as a NJCAA Second Team All-Region XII honorees for the 2011 and 2012 seasons. Six different players have received All-MCCAA recognition under Coach Ritsema’s leadership.

Coach Ritsema graduated from Muskegon Communi-ty College in 1995 with his Associates degree and was the team captain of the MCC club soccer team in 1994. He completed his Bachelor’s and Master’s degree from Western Michigan University in elementary education and education leadership. Before coaching at Muskegon Community College, Coach Ritsema was the head coach of the boys soccer team at Reeths-Puffer High School

from 1999-2010 and the head coach of the girls soccer teams at Reeths-Puffer High School from 2000-2010. He has the most wins in Reeths-Puffer soccer history and has coached 12 players to All-State honors. Under Coach Ritsema, Reeths-Puffer won the school’s first ever soccer district championship in 2000 during the girls soccer season. He led his boy’s teams to 2 conference championships and the girl’s team to 3 district championships while at Reeths-Puffer.

Coach Ritsema was named the Muskegon Chronicle Boys Soccer Coach of the Year during the 2004 & 2010 boys season. During the 2008 & 2010 girls season, he was named the District Coach of the Year, and the 2008 Muskegon Chronicle Girls Soccer Coach of the Year. He played high school soccer at Western Michigan Christian High School, earning All-Area, All-District, All-Sectional, All-Conference and second team All-State honors as a senior. Coach Ritsema currently holds a USSF National D License.

Coach Ritsema teaches 6th grade social studies at Fruitport Middle School. He currently resides in Muskegon with his wife Sarah and three sons.

Men’s Soccer

Assistant Coach

Coach Marty Herzhaft returns for his 3rd season as the assistant head coach and goalie coach for Muskegon Community College. In the two years at MCC, coach Herzhaft has guided his goalies to a 22-16-2 overall record and a combined 1.65 goals against average. His goalies have led the way in the Michigan Community College Athletic Association, winning first team all-conference honors in each of MCC’s first two years in the league. The Jayhawk goalies have posted 11 shutouts in two seasons and will look to improve on those stats this upcoming season. Coach Herzhaft has set high goals for both himself and his incoming keepers this season.

Coach Herzhaft started his coaching career as a recre-ational coach, before joining the Reeths-Puffer Girls high school coaching staff in 1998. He was the goalie coach at R-P for 10 seasons with the girls program before resign-ing from Reeths-Puffer in 2007. During his time at R-P, he coached his goalies to a combined 1.46 goals against average, over 65 shutouts, one district title and 3 district honors with two different keepers.

Coach Herzhaft has been playing soccer for over 28 years and has spent most of his soccer career in the net. He played high school soccer at Reeths-Puffer High school and graduated in 1998. After high school he began playing in the West Michigan Premier League where he was voted in as the starting goalie for the 2006 East vs. West All-Star game in Detroit.

Coach Herzhaft currently lives in Norton Shores with his wife Kerry. He works in the maintenance department at Wesley School in Muskegon.

Assistant Coach

Coach Brent Damm joins the men’s soccer coaching staff at Muskegon Community College as an offensive assistant coach. Having played soccer since the age of 5, Coach Damm has spent many years watching, playing, and learning every aspect of the game. Coach Damm has a passion for coaching offensive play-ers, being a lifelong offensive player and soccer enthusi-ast himself.

As a 2000 Reeths-Puffer graduate, Coach Damm was voted Most Valuable Player by his coaches and his team-mates, along with other team, local, and state awards. After graduating, Coach Damm played in the Holland Premier League in 2003 and 2004. In 2004, he was one of the top 10 goal scorers in the league. In 2006, he played in the West Michigan Premier League. During that season, he was voted in as the starting forward in the East vs. West All Star Game in Detroit. Throughout the years, Coach Damm has helped local youth soccer play-ers perfect their game by leading various drills at team practices. Coach Damm has had a passion for soccer since he was very young and has a willingness to help anyone who shares in his love for the game.

Coach Damm currently lives in Spring Lake, MI and is self-employed.

Assistant Coach

Coach Jack Ketchum returns for his third season as a member of the coaching staff for the men’s soccer team at Muskegon Community College as an assistant coach. Coach Ketchum graduated from Michigan State University in 1970 with teaching certifi-cates in Elementary Education and Deaf Education. He continued his post-graduate studies at Western Michigan University and Grand Valley State University obtaining additional degrees in Early Childhood Education, Pre-Pri-mary Impaired Education and a certification as a Teacher Consultant for the Hearing Impaired. He has taught for 42 years in the public schools of west Michigan.

Coach Ketchum has worked as a boys and girls coach at Reeths-Puffer High School 1995 until 2011. He has been an assistant soccer coach for Coach Ben Ritsema at Reeths-Puffer from 1999 to 2010. He was a coach in the Laketon Youth Soccer Program during the 1990s. Coach Ketchum is currently an Educational Consultant to the school districts of Newaygo County and a Planning Com-missioner in Spring Lake Township. He lives in Spring Lake Township with his wife Martha. They are parents of three daughters and currently have seven grandchildren.
