Following the breakup of the Beatles, John Lennon and Yoko Ono moved to New York City in 1971, where Lennon sought to escape the mayhem of the Beatles era and focus on his family and private life. American Masters' LENNONYC takes an intimate look at the time Lennon, Yoko Ono and their son, Sean, spent living in New York City during the 1970s.

People sometimes forget — a nonprofi t organization is a business. If it’s not run like a business, it may not be around for long. Charities, social service organizations, health care organizations and nonprofi ts of all kinds are impacted by the greater economy in ways that are not unlike their for-profi t counterparts. As a retailer or builder or restaurateur, public awareness and visibility in the community is essential, especially during tough economic times.

In an ongoing effort to lift the nonprofi t community and move it forward, WTVP is introducing a new initiative called WTVP Caring Connection. It allows an individual or business to sponsor TV spots on WTVP and our other marketing resources on behalf of their favorite charitable cause. The organization receives exposure to the informed, engaged, community-minded audience of WTVP, and sponsors receive the satisfaction of knowing they have helped the forces of good make a difference.

Littleton Alston’s young life was sculpted by hardship and triumph. Fifty years later, the Omaha artist and Creighton University associate professor of sculpture is the fi rst African American to create a work to be displayed in National Statuary Hall at the U.S. Capitol. A Sculpted Life follows Alston on his creative quest to understand his subject, Nebraska writer Willa Cather, and explores how personal struggles have shaped his own life.

NOTE FROM THE STATION MANAGER

It can be an uplifting experience to see the world through another’s eyes. Recently my wife and I were with our granddaughter when she visited her fi rst beach. The excitement and joy on her face as she splashed, jumped and ran between family members transformed that trip.

At home, some everyday items create a sense of wonderment, while others fi nd new uses in her imagination. Rocks from our garden became a bird with babies, and a basket of yarn was a pile of rope. She sees things differently and her enthusiasm can at times be infectious.

We do something similar at WTVP. Our programs let viewers experience the world through different eyes and can bring new excitement or understanding to the everyday. For example, this month Nature is presenting a two-part series about cat species from around the world highlighting their evolutionary tricks and adaptations. After watching, viewers might have a new perspective on house cats.

On Create TV, cooking shows use ingredients in novel ways to produce new dishes, and on World Channel, documentaries look at the impact of places and people on our history. WTVP constantly provides programs that explore subjects from different angles. Thanks for continuing to investigate your world with WTVP.

Sesame Street comes to Jazz at Lincoln Center for a swinging celebration of the show’s 50th anniversary. See some of your favorite feathered and furry friends like Big Bird and Elmo sing classic Sesame Street songs alongside the world-renowned Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis.

It’s hard to imagine Sesame Street without music. The iconic show has featured many unforgettable tunes performed by real jazz musicians like trumpeter Kenny Rampton, a longtime member of the Sesame Street band.

Many of the jazz greats have visited Sesame Street over the past 50 years. It is where countless children were introduced to legends like Dizzy Gillespie, Herbie Hancock and Mary Lou Williams. Wynton Marsalis visited Sesame Street a few times, where he played Take the A Train with the "Duck Ellington Orchestra" and joined Hoots the Owl on No Matter What Your Language (Our Music Can Be the Same). Likewise, the JLCO has reimagined Sesame Street favorites into big band bonanzas, and this celebration will feature brand-new arrangements of Sesame Street gems.

No one is too young or too old to enjoy this playful, intelligent and joyful music, so help us celebrate 50 years of our wonderful neighbors from Sesame Street.

Ever since Richard Nixon and John Kennedy held the fi rst televised presidential debate in 1960, television has been a powerful communication medium for scores of politicians, including presidential candidates. This year is no exception. WTVP will air a vice presidential debate between Mike Pence and Kamala Harris on October 7 and presidential debates between President Donald Trump and Joe Biden on October 15 and 22.

None of these 2020 face-offs will originate in Illinois, but I’d like to think we know a thing or two about debating here in the Land of Lincoln. After all, it was 160 years ago this year that a series of debates between a prominent Illinois Senator and his mostly unknown challenger from Springfi eld attracted throngs of people to seven towns across the state. There was no TV, no live streaming, no mobile phones, no smart devices. If Illinoisans wanted to see and hear Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas, they got on a horse, hitched up a wagon, hopped a train or walked. As voters, they knew it was their responsibility to learn where the candidates stood on the issues before casting their ballot.

This election season I am urging you to make yourself an informed, engaged voter. You can start by tuning in regularly to Judy Woodruff and the team at PBS NewsHour. The upcoming debates, which will be carried live on WTVP, are another chance to take a close look at the candidates. I hope you will take advantage of the trustworthy election coverage on WTVP and use what you see and hear to help inform your decision.

Clifford the Big Red Dog helped us safely celebrate our Writers Contest winners. The writers and families came at appointed times and received a bag of goodies for winning the PBS Kids Writers Contest.

Seven-year-old Linden Roberts and her cardboard boat, Mermazing, won the Illinois Valley Yacht and Canoe Club annual children’s cardboard boat races September 7. She fl ew past the competition and decided to donate her winnings to WTVP PBS Kids! Our Board of Directors and CEO loved her story so much we invited her to come tour the station.
