Students are encouraged to become </p><p>familiar with the information contained in the Handbook and to refer to it often as a guide for their activities </p><p>within the department. </p><p>The University of Minnesota Duluth </p><p>The University of Minnesota Duluth integrates liberal education, research, creative activity, and public </p><p>engagement and prepares students to thrive as lifelong learners and globally engaged citizens. </p><p> STATEMENT OF MISSION </p><p> The School of Fine Arts </p><p>The School of Fine Arts at the University of Minnesota, Duluth is a primary center in northern </p><p>Minnesota for those individuals seeking a comprehensive education in the visual and performing arts and </p><p>those whose study in other disciplines is complemented by the fine arts curriculum. </p><p>The faculty of the departments of art, music, and theater recognize the importance of quality </p><p>instruction, scholarship, performance, and research. This dedication to excellence is provided by a balance </p><p>between traditional academic experiences and performance/exhibition opportunities for both students and </p><p>faculty. </p><p>Through on-campus exhibitions in art and performances in music and theater, as well as outreach </p><p>activities in the community and state, the School of Fine Arts accepts a significant role in fostering arts and </p><p>serving as a cultural center for the region. This role is greatly enhanced by the association with the </p><p>Universitys performing arts facilities, historic estate, and art museum which provide superior quality </p><p>educational resources and cultural experiences for students and members of the community. </p><p>All units within the School of Fine Arts are committed to demanding standards of performance in </p><p>the classroom and in artistic endeavors. Through broad-based liberal arts training and individualized </p><p>instruction in areas of specialization, the School attracts students who possess both strong artistic and </p><p>academic potential. </p><p>STATEMENT OF MISSION </p><p>Department of Music </p><p>The Department of Music is a primary resource for those who seek a comprehensive music </p><p>education and for those who wish to enrich their lives through involvement with music. The mission of the </p><p>Department of Music is to provide students the highest quality musical instruction, preparing them to be </p><p>teachers, creators, performers, and appreciators of music. Music students and faculty play a leading role in </p><p>offering cultural and artistic enrichment to the campus, community, and upper Midwest area through </p><p>outreach and scholarly/creative activities. The department is committed to assisting students to achieve </p><p>demanding standards of performance and scholarship in both classroom and artistic endeavors and to make </p><p>ethical and gratifying choices to shape their citizenship within the musical community. </p></li><li><p> 3 </p><p>I. Music Department Goals and Objectives </p><p>Department Goals: </p><p>To provide students high quality music instruction. </p><p>To assist students to succeed as performers, teachers, scholars, and appreciators of music. </p><p>To provide students a framework for making responsible and artistic musical and professional decisions. </p><p>To undertake departmental endeavors in an environment of high professional ethics, providing students a </p><p>model of appropriate professional conduct. </p><p>To provide the university and community a variety of musical opportunities as learners, listeners, and </p><p>producers of music. </p><p>Department Objectives: </p><p>As a result of completing a degree program within the Music Department, all music majors will: </p><p> Demonstrate an understanding of music of varied genres, historical periods, styles, and cultures.
