Dear Parents and Students

I am delighted to have this opportunity to welcome you to the wonderful world of Perth College Music. The Performing Arts department provides a positive experience for all through the impact of music. Our K-12 programme is creative, challenging and enjoyable, nurturing a lifelong musical appreciation. We encourage personal development and the pursuit of excellence within a spiritual and caring community.

Students studying Music at Perth College benefit from 10 purpose-built practice rooms each with an upright piano, two well-equipped classrooms, a large rehearsal studio (Dorothea Angus Studio - DAS) with full orchestral percussion, a 700-seat Theatre (Judith Cottier Theatre), three grand pianos, a harpsichord, three harps and a pipe organ. There are currently over 20 peripatetic instrumental tutors who provide individual lessons on more than 20 different instruments. Perth College is equipped with recording facilities and computers are installed with such software as Sibelius 7, Auralia and Musition.

All girls at Perth College in Kindergarten through to Year 7 study Music in the classroom. The department also has a flourishing academic Music programme from Years 8 to 12 when the study of classroom music becomes an option.

Perth College offers a wide range of co-curricular ensembles. This year, we are proud to continue our nine year relationship with Aquinas College. Girls will have the opportunity to participate in a combined choir, string orchestra and concert band at senior levels. Prior to this, students will have the opportunity to participate in a choir, band and orchestra. Please find, in this booklet, a full list of ensembles offered to students at Perth College.

All students from Years 2 to 6 learn a string or band instrument in pairs and these ‘programme lessons’ are fully covered by the School. Individual lessons sought by Junior School students can also be managed. Parents will be charged for individual lessons not part of the programme. All Junior School students also sing in a choir. The string, band and choral programmes of the Junior School are scheduled into the timetable in addition to normal classroom music lessons. 2018 will feature our 14th annual musical which showcases every Junior School student.

Research has shown that music encourages greater self-discipline, self-esteem, teamwork, communication skills and spatial awareness, but best of all, it is great fun! I warmly invite students to become a valued part of music-making at Perth College and look forward to overseeing their musical development.
