The Legend of LalloronaOne of the most famous and tragic legends of Mexico is that of "La Llorona" (the crying woman) . Of all the

many versions of this legend I have heard, the historical one seems to be the most interesting.

Some years after Cortez conquered the Aztecs, what we now know as Mexico, was called New Spain.

A class society developed as the races mixed. At the top of society were the full-blooded Spaniards. At thebottom of society were the Indians.

One day, a young Spanish soldier fell in love with a beautiful Indian girl. They tried to keep their relationshipa secret, but the parents of each found out. The Spaniard's parents demanded he not see the Indian girl and decidedthey would arrange his marriage to a proper Spanish girl. Meanwhile, the Indian girl's parents were furious. Howcould she love one of the Spaniards who had stolen their beautiful land and killed so many of their kind?

The two, however, were too much in love to part. So, they made the ultimate sacrifice-they ran away to themountains to live as husband and wife. As long as they had each other, they felt they did not need their families.

Some years passed and they had three beautiful children. The Indian girl loved them dearly. They were allblonde-haired and blue-eyed like the soldier. The Indian girl and the soldier were very happy. But, after time, thesoldier began to miss his family and the high society he was from. The Indian girl sensed this and tried to keep himhappy. However, one day, the soldier told her he was leaving. She pleaded with him to stay, but they ended up havinga very big argument and the soldier left.

As she watched him leave, she became very, very angry and depressed. She couldn't accept the fact that shewould be without him. She sat for daysjust staring out the window and crying. She soon went crazy. Her childrenwere crying from hunger, but she could not really see or hear them. Finally, when she did look at the children, shesaw the soldier. In her crazed state, she murdered the children and took their bodies and threw them into the river.

The woman's white dress was covered with blood. She went into the town. All who saw her ran from her-thinking she was a witch. She walked into a church; and there was the soldier being married to a Spanish girl.

Everyone gasped at the sight of her. She wailed-in a sound that sent chills and fear into all who were there-"I killed my children."

Everyone's fear turned to anger and rage. The whole crowd chased after her. She ran to the swamp, but noone could find her. She was never found.

To this day, as the legend goes, the woman is known as La Llorona-the crying woman. Many have heardher by rivers and swamps-crying at night and searching for her children.
