Music Magazine
Pitch
Genre
• The first choice I had to make, was what genre my music magazine was going to be. I researched and came up with a few options:
• Alternative/Indie- There are very few magazines for this type of music out at the minute which would make it a good choice, but I would have to target a very specific audience.
• Teen Pop- There a lots of magazines for this type of music, but it is the most broad type of music making it easier to do.
• I chose to do Teen Pop as I think it would be the easier.
Target Audience
• Once I had chosen my genre of Teen Pop, I had to think about who the target audience would be.
• From researching the genre, I found that they are mostly targeted at teenage girls. I also thought this would be fairly easy as I used to read these sort of magazines when I was younger, so I am familiar with the codes and conventions.
Magazine Title
• To help me come up with a title for my magazine, I researched all types existing music magazines (focusing on teen pop) and looked at all of their titles.
• From this research I found that most of the titles that are already being used are at least vaguely associated with music.
• One of the questions I asked in the survey I made was ‘What do you think would be a suitable name for my magazine?’ and I got a few suggestions. I took these suggestions into consideration and came up with the title ‘Sound’. I like this title because it is short and snappy, and therefore fairly memorable whilst still being related to music.
Influences
• One music magazine I really like is ‘Billboard’. I particularly like their front covers and model poses. I used issues of this magazine as inspiration for my magazine front cover.
• Despite this, Billboard isn’t typically a teen pop magazine, so I also looked at the conventions of magazines such as ‘top of the pops’ and ‘we love pop’.
• When creating my magazine, I will conform to a lot of the conventions of teen pop magazines, however I will go against some of them and take inspiration from other sources.
Colour Scheme, Fonts, and Images
• For my magazine, I decided I wanted to stick to a colour scheme of pink and white, as pink is a very popular colour with the target audience(teen girls).
• I want to use fonts that are easy to read for younger people- probably a more-rounded font and in a large enough font that it is easy to read.
• For the images in my magazine, I am using my friend as the main model, who I think looks quite like a young person that would sing pop music (according to other pop music magazines). I will take all of the images myself. As well as this, for the contents page I am going to use a few different models as artists that would also feature in the rest of the magazine if I were to actually make it. I will use people in my class as I feel like people in a magazine for teenagers should be quite young themselves.
Article
• The article in my magazine will be focused on one particular artist (‘Olivia Western’). It will be an interview between a journalist from the magazine and Olivia. To make it more clear, the questions will be in a bright red text and the answers will be in plain black text.
• The questions will be asking about the artist herself and her the start of her career, and then move on to her future in the music business. I think that this is the most logical order to ask the questions in, and it would make more sense to the audience.
Overall
• The overall feel of my music magazine ‘Sound’ will be girly, fun and quite young, as I think that is what my target audience (younger teenage girls)look for when buying a magazine.
• They are more interested in the look of the magazine and the images and colours than the actual information. They are more likely to buy a magazine if it look appealing/is eye-catching and stands out.
