 Music Legend Herb Alpert and Grammy Award‐Winning Lani Hall 

at the Lilian Fontaine Garden Theatre August 21    

Saratoga, CA    Herb Alpert, one of the music industry’s most influential artists, and the 

immensely talented vocalist and Alpert’s lifelong partner, Lani Hall, will thrill fans in what 

promises to be an unforgettable night of extraordinary music, Sunday, August 21, at Montalvo’s 

outdoor Lilian Fontaine Garden Theatre.   Performing songs from their recently released album, 

I Feel You, the creative duo brings their vocal and instrumental virtuosity to the stage with 

reinterpreted classics such as, Van Morrison’s “Moondance,” and two Beatles renditions, 

“Blackbird” and “Here Comes the Sun” and, expressive new songs.  The sensual and stirring  

I Feel You follows the 2009 release of the live album Anything Goes, by Alpert and Hall.   

As a performing artist, Herb Alpert is most famous for his unparalleled trumpet playing and his 

band, Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass, from the mid‐60s.  Miles Davis said it best about 

Alpert’s unique style; “You don’t have to hear but three notes before you know it is Herb 

Alpert.” Over the years, Alpert’s racked up five number one hits, 28 albums on the Billboard 

charts, eight Grammys and 14 platinum and 15 gold albums.  In 1966, Alpert’s band set a 

record by placing five albums simultaneously in the top 20 on Billboard’s Pop Album Chart ‐ an 

accomplishment that’s never been repeated.  Alpert has been recognized with a star on the 

Hollywood Walk of Fame and he and his partner, Jerry Moss, were inducted into the Rock and 

Roll Hall of Fame for creating A & M Records, one of the most successful independent record 

labels in history.

AT A & M Records, Alpert and Moss influenced and produced a diverse roster of talent, 

including Janet Jackson, Chuck Mangione, The Police, Sheryl Crow, Peter Frampton and 

countless others. During their reign, they averaged two Grammys, seven gold records and 

four platinum albums every year for 30 years, for a total of over 200 gold records, nearly 100 

platinum and multiplatinum records. Alpert is also an exhibiting painter, sculptor, theatre 

producer and philanthropist.  He helped bring Tony Kushner’s Pulitzer prize‐winning “Angels in 

America,” as well as works by Arthur Miller, David Mamet, August Wilson and others to the 

Broadway stage.   

Grammy award‐winning artist Lani Hall, known for her emotional and sultry interpretations 

and vocal range, started her professional career as the original lead singer with Sergio Mendes 

and Brasil ’66.  She helped propel the group into international stardom with her distinctive 

singing style.  Hall embarked on a solo career in 1972 with Sun Down Lady, followed with Hello 

It's Me in 1975. She recorded regularly throughout the 70s and 80s and sang the title song of 

the James Bond movie, Never Say Never Again.  In 1984, Hall again worked with Sérgio Mendes, 

appearing on his album Confetti. 

Hall’s recorded 14 solo albums in English, Portuguese and Spanish and won a Grammy for 

“Best Latin Pop Performance” for her album Es Facil Amar in 1986.  Hall also has credits as a 

lyricist, producer, arranger, writer and editor.  

Alpert and Hall have given generously to the arts through their foundation, to CalArts for music 

curricula, and to endow the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music. These are but a few of the many 

non‐profit organizations the two have supported.  

Herb Alpert and Lani Hall is the tenth concert in the 2011 ARTTEC Summer Concert Series at 

Montalvo’s charming and intimate Lilian Fontaine Garden Theater.  ARTTEC is an innovative 

partnership between Montalvo and the Sobrato Arts Foundation for Education that provides 

hands‐on training and mentoring for high school students in the performing arts industry. 

Throughout the concert series, students will work directly with concert production 

professionals and high‐caliber artists in learning about the performing arts business and 

backstage production, while gaining real‐world work experience.

The Montalvo Experience: Surrounded by Italianate gardens and a stunning Mediterranean 

Villa, concertgoers are encouraged to picnic on the historic grounds or enjoy delicious offerings 

from the on‐site concessions. Gourmet dinners will be served on the villa’s beautiful veranda
